Football: Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino charged for improper conduct

LONDON (AFP) - Tottenham Hotspur manager Mauricio Pochettino was charged with improper conduct by the Football Association on Monday (Feb 26) following his side's defeat to Burnley on Saturday.
The Argentinian had engaged in a lengthy and heated exchange with referee Mike Dean after the full-time whistle at Turf Moor on Saturday.
Pochettino had watched his men slip to a 2-1 defeat, which dented their hopes of winning the Premier League title.
A statement from the FA read: "Mauricio Pochettino has been charged with two breaches of FA Rule E3 following the game against Burnley on Saturday.
"It is alleged the Tottenham manager's language and/or behaviour at the end of the fixture - both on the pitch and in or around the tunnel area - amounted to improper conduct.
"He has until 6pm on February 28, 2019 to respond to the charge."
Pochettino did not reveal what was said or the reason for the strength of his feelings, with the only contentious decision appearing to be the awarding of a corner that led to Chris Wood's opening goal for Burnley.

The outburst was out of character for Pochettino, who said before the charge was announced he would not contest any disciplinary action, admitting he may have "crossed the line".
Third-placed Spurs are on 60 points, five points behind Manchester City and six adrift of leaders Liverpool. All three sides have played 27 games.

Give Sarri more time and players: Hasselbaink

Give Sarri more time and players: Hasselbaink

Maurizio Sarri should be given more time as Chelsea manager, but the club's success next season will also depend greatly on whether they can get their transfer ban lifted.
Those are the views of former Blues striker Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink, who will be in Singapore to catch the Manchester United-Chelsea game tonight at the Football Moments event, presented by Chang Beer and organised by Singtel Media, at the Clarke Quay Fountain Square.
A win would strengthen Chelsea's hopes for a top-four finish and qualification to the Champions League next season. They are fourth on 67 points, one ahead of Arsenal and three ahead of United in sixth, with three games left.
Hasselbaink, 47, felt that Chelsea and Sarri have to make a statement that they are going in the right direction by beating United.
He told the Sunday Times: "The team started the season really well and expectations were raised because they went 12 games unbeaten and were top of the table.
"But a lot of (observers) knew they could not maintain the position. They don't have the squad that Manchester City or Liverpool have.
"Sarri came in with a totally different style which other teams eventually adapted to, and Chelsea themselves have not really adapted.

ADVERSE IMPACT
Sarri came in with a totally different style which other teams eventually adapted to, and Chelsea themselves have not really adapted.
JIMMY FLOYD HASSELBAINK, former Chelsea striker, on manager Maurizio Sarri.

"Sunday will be a very important match and Chelsea must show they can beat a top-six rival away, something they have not done all season.
"And once the season is over, you have to look at the pluses and minuses, and then build on that by giving Sarri more time because the club have made a decision to go with his style by appointing him."
The Dutchman also feels Chelsea need to strengthen their squad, with the London club set to lose their top striker Eden Hazard to Real Madrid.
But that will depend on whether the Blues can overturn Fifa's two-window transfer ban for breaching rules related to the signing of foreign players under the age of 18.
He said: "Chelsea definitely need to strengthen the squad, regardless of whether Hazard stays or goes.
"They need a better balance, and in midfield, they also need more creativity, like what Manchester City have in players like Kevin de Bruyne. They also need a left-back, centre-half and most importantly, an out-and-out striker that is top quality."
Hasselbaink (1999, 2001) and Ivorian Didier Drogba (2007, 2010) are the only two Chelsea strikers to top the league's scoring charts in the last 20 years.
And he believes he knows why the Argentinian Gonzalo Higuain, with four goals in 14 games, has struggled since his loan move from Juventus in January.
Hasselbaink said: "You need to be at your physical peak. It's a lot quicker and more physical than the Italian Serie A or Spanish LaLiga.
"Higuain is (31), he needs time to adapt... If he were 26 and arrived in the Premier League, it would have been easier for him, and I am sure he would have done well."
Sazali Abdul Aziz

Hasselbaink also claims that if Chelsea's ban is kept in place then Derby boss Frank Lampard could be the go to man if Maurizio Sarri leaves. Hasselbaink added: "If Chelsea get a transfer ban

Football: Wood double gives Burnley win over Cardiff in relegation scrap

(REUTERS)- Chris Wood scored twice as Burnley virtually assured Premier League safety with a 2-0 win over fellow strugglers Cardiff City on Saturday (April 13) which left the Welsh club deep in relegation trouble and their manager Neil Warnock fuming.
Cardiff, occupying the final relegation slot in 18th place, are on 28 points, five behind 17th-placed Brighton with five games remaining. Burnley, who have won three in a row, move up to 14th place on 39 points - 11 ahead of Cardiff.
But for the large travelling Welsh support the game will be remembered for a second half penalty incident when, with the score at 1-0 to Burnley, referee Mike Dean changed his mind after initially pointing to the spot.
New Zealander Wood, who had struck the post in the second minute, put the Clarets in front in the 31st minute with a fine header from a Dwight McNeil corner.
Burnley then had several chances to add to their lead with Cardiff keeper Neil Etheridge twice doing well to keep out shots from Clarets midfielder Ashley Westwood.
Just before the break, Burnley's Ashley Barnes was booked after a confrontation with Joe Bennett where he appeared to kiss the Cardiff defender on the nose.
Cardiff came out strongly after the interval and thought they had a great chance to level three minutes into the second half when they were initially awarded a penalty for a handball by Ben Mee.
The linesman's flag was raised after Mee headed the ball at his own hand and Dean responded by pointing to the spot.
But after consulting with his assistant Darren Cann, Dean changed his mind, leading to angry protests from the Cardiff players and sighs of relief from the home crowd.
"Mike must have seen something to go over and we're gutted really. I think Darren made the right decision and Mike has talked him out of it," said Warnock.
Junior Hoilett then wasted a great chance for Cardiff, blasting high over the bar after being found unmarked inside the area.
Burnley made sure of the win in stoppage time when Wood added his second goal, nodding home from close range after a winding run from winger McNeil whose low cross was clipped into the air by the sliding Bruno Manga.
The win means Burnley could be mathematically safe before their next game at Chelsea on Easter Monday but manager Sean Dyche was wary of assuming survival was now guaranteed.
"I don't think you talk about that because you want it factually. You can't guarantee it but I think we're in a very, very healthy position," he said.
Warnock's side now play Brighton, who on Saturday suffered a 5-0 thrashing at home to Bournemouth, on Tuesday in a match which looks like the last chance for them to find a path away from the drop.

Football: Zaha earns Palace a point at home to West Ham

LONDON (REUTERS) - Wilfried Zaha's deflected goal earned Crystal Palace a 1-1 draw at home to fellow Londoners West Ham United in the Premier League on Saturday (Feb 9).
It had looked as though Mark Noble's 27th-minute penalty and Palace's profligacy in front of goal would condemn Palace to a damaging loss in their bid to climb away from the relegation dogfight.
But Zaha eventually beat West Ham's keeper Lucasz Fabianski with a shot that looped up off the boot of Issa Diop.
West Ham had been the better side before the break with Noble calmly putting them ahead from the spot after Palace keeper Vincente Guita hauled down Michail Antonio.
Palace, who began the day four points and four places above the bottom three, were much improved in the second half and created numerous chances to equalise.
Substitute Michy Batshuayi should have scored before James McArthur struck the post with only Fabianski to beat.
Zaha's persistence paid off in the 76th minute and he could have won it for Palace late on.
"I am frustrated as it was such a good performance. The first half I thought was even, but in the second half it was pretty much one-way traffic," manager Roy Hodgson said.
"We had to work hard for our equaliser, we had 17 attempts in the second half, we swarmed around the goal but we found Fabianski in very good form."
Palace actually ended the day one point closer to the drop zone.
"I'm not concerned about what is going on below us, if we keep doing our bit and with performances like today we will get points off our own backs," Hodgson said.
"We know we are good enough to stay out of it."
The draw left Palace with 27 points from 26 games, three points above the relegation zone while West Ham, in 10th place, have now gone five games without a win all competitions.
West Ham manager Manuel Pellegrini thought a draw was a fair result.
"They were a bit lucky with the goal but they had other chances so the draw was the logical result," he said.

White Swans aim to soar after setbacks

White Swans aim to soar after setbacks

In each of their three league-winning campaigns, Albirex Niigata have always won their first few games of the season to give themselves a good start in the title race.
They now find themselves in an unfamiliar position, however, having to play catch-up in the Singapore Premier League after losing their league opener 1-0 to Geylang International two weeks ago.
Throw in the Community Shield penalty shoot-out defeat to Home United last month, and it is almost unthinkable that the White Swans could lose three in a row if they fall to Brunei DPMM - who have two wins and two clean sheets from two games - at the Jurong East Stadium tonight.
The last time they suffered a hat-trick of defeats was in 2014, when the Brunei team beat them in both legs of the Singapore Cup before they lost to Tanjong Pagar in the League Cup.
On their part, Albirex have been pro-active to remedy their shortcomings.
General manager Koh Mui Tee said they went to Myanmar last week and played friendlies against their national Under-19s and U-22s, which they won 3-1 and drew 0-0 respectively.
He said: "We want to improve our attacking play, and general confidence ahead of the Brunei DPMM game and I feel we achieved our objectives during this trip.
"We scored against the Myanmar U-19s and managed to keep a clean sheet against their U-22s who are a fast and strong side."
Albirex coach Keiji Shigetomi was pleased to note that his attacking trio - pacey Daizo Horikoshi, and technically accomplished Hiroyoshi Kamata and Kyoga Nakamura - had a good outing in Myanmar.
Shigetomi said: "We didn't score in our first two games (this season) but we created a number of chances and that is a good thing.
"Against Geylang, we hit the post twice and had a shot cleared off the line.

  • Goals scored by Albirex Niigata, in regulation time in their opening two matches of the season.

"You could say we were unlucky, but we have to improve our accuracy, the delivery of the final ball, as well as decision-making.
"We continued to create against the Myanmar teams and this time Horikoshi scored once and Kamata scored twice so that is good for the confidence of the individuals and the team.
"At the other end, we conceded just once in two games against Home and Geylang, and that was from a corner.
"This means our defence actually held firm in open play and we did not give opponents many chances, so I feel our defence is quite stable overall."
While Albirex aim to get off the mark tonight, Shigetomi recognises the threat after the Brunei side's perfect start to the season.
He added: "This year, DPMM have three new imports in defence, midfield and attack (Englishman Charlie Clough, Australian Blake Ricciuto and Belarusian Andrey Varankow) who are strong, physical and dangerous during set plays.
"Their local players have been together in the team for many years, so they have good chemistry and we have to be careful of them too.
"But we are going for our first win of the season and we want to continue playing our own game, staying solid in defence and relying on good combination play to break down opponent's defence to achieve our objectives."

Ikhsan opens account for new club

Ikhsan Fandi took all of two minutes to net his first goal for his new club, Raufoss IL, and helped them beat Elverum Fotball 6-1 early yesterday morning (Singapore time) at the Raufoss Storhall indoor arena in Norway.
The 19-year-old, who became the first Lion to join a European team in 30 years when he signed a two-year deal with the Norwegian second-tier side earlier this month, was brought on with fellow forward Thierry Dabove in the 59th minute of a pre-season friendly against the third-tier opponents.
The duo combined to deadly effect shortly after, when Dabove's shot was parried by former Raufoss goalkeeper Andreas Heggen, only for Ikhsan to show his predatory instincts by beating two defenders to thump the loose ball home with his right foot inside the six-yard box and make it 3-1 for Raufoss.
The new Raufoss No. 18 also displayed his willingness to run at the defence before he recorded his first assist by picking out Ryan Doghman with a through ball in the 84th minute to increase the lead to 5-1.
Ikhsan told The Sunday Times: "I'm glad I got the first goal out of the way quickly, but there are always things to improve on.
"The coaches were happy with my 30-minute performance. I just wanted to express myself and show the people here I can play football.

"But this is only a friendly and I still have to improve my fitness. I also want to link up play better and make more runs behind defences to create trouble for the opponents and opportunities for my team."
Raufoss and Ikhsan will face a sterner test when they continue their pre-season preparations with a friendly against top-division club Odds Ballklubb on Thursday.
They will kick off the new season at Nest-Sotra on March 31.

Kompany's next stop: Anderlecht as player-manager

Kompany's next stop: Anderlecht as player-manager

LONDON • Vincent Kompany announced yesterday that he will leave Manchester City after 11 trophy-laden years to become player-manager of Anderlecht.
Belgian defender Kompany joined City in 2008 and made 360 appearances, winning four Premier League titles, two FA Cups, four League Cups and two Community Shields.
The club captain signed off by lifting the FA Cup trophy on Saturday after City thrashed Watford 6-0 to complete a domestic treble.
"As overwhelming as it is, the time has come for me to go. And what a season to bow out," said the 33-year-old, who was in tears after scoring a dramatic long-range winner against Leicester in City's final home game of the season on May 6.
"I feel nothing but gratefulness. I am grateful to all those who supported me on a special journey, at a very special club."
Anderlecht is the Belgian club where Kompany began his professional career before joining Hamburg and he admitted he is relishing the chance to move into management.
"For the next three years, I will take up the role of player-manager of Anderlecht. Belgium's finest," he wrote on Facebook.

  • Vincent Kompany has led Manchester City to four Premier League titles.

"This may come as a surprise to you. It's the most passionate yet rational decision I've ever made.
"(Club owner) Sheikh Mansour changed my life and that of all the City fans around the world, for that I am forever grateful.
"A blue nation has arisen and challenged the established order of things, I find that awesome."
Kompany, who featured in only 17 of City's 38 league games this season because of muscle problems, also paid tribute to his teammates and manager Pep Guardiola.
"It's cliche to say it, but it's also so true: without my teammates, I would have never been here today," he said.
"So to all of you, from the 2008-2009 squad to today's domestic treble winners: I owe you guys!
"A special word also to Pep and the backroom staff: you've been superb... Thank you so much."
In September, City will hold Kompany's testimonial match, from which he will donate all profits to Manchester's homeless.
City chairman Khaldoon Al Mubarak told the club's official website: "There have been many important contributors to Manchester City's renaissance, but arguably none are more important than Vincent Kompany. For a decade, he has been the lifeblood, the soul, and beating heart of a supremely talented squad.
"A booming voice in the dressing room yet a quiet and measured ambassador off it, Vincent can be as proud of himself as we are of him."
Midfielder Kevin de Bruyne, Kompany's club and country teammate, tweeted: "Playing for about 10 years with this man for club and country. And what a privilege it's been.
"Big player, Big personality and big leader. Learnt a lot from you. Wishing you all the best for the future."

Football: Ghana President forces Asamoah Gyan out of 24-hour retirement for Africa Cup of Nations

(THE GUARDIAN) - Asamoah Gyan has made a rapid U-turn on his decision to retire from Ghana duty and will now play at the Africa Cup of Nations, after being told by the nation's President that it is "in the national interest" that he reconsiders.
"A presidential request is one that cannot be disregarded," said the former Sunderland striker in a statement. "I have taken the request of His Excellency Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo in good faith and will make myself available for selection by coach Kwasi Appiah to help win the Afcon trophy."
Gyan turned his back on the team only 24 hours earlier after reportedly being dropped as captain but Mr Akufo-Addo was concerned that Gyan's decision had caused such uproar among the Ghanaian public that he personally contacted the striker and used his influence to change his mind.
"President Akufo-Addo spoke on the telephone with Asamoah Gyan, and informed him of the considerable national disquiet over his decision to retire from the Black Stars," the spokesman for the president, Eugene Arhin, said in a statement.
"The President urged him, in the national interest, to rescind his decision to retire from the Black Stars, and make himself available for selection by coach Kwasi Appiah."
Having said on Tuesday (May 21) he was retiring to avoid fuelling "the purported undermining the country has seen under my captaincy", Gyan's love for the national team appears to have been rekindled after Akufo-Addo's telephone call.
"My desire to help Ghana end the over three-decade long wait to annex the Afcon trophy still burns strong, and I remain committed to serving this great nation and the people of Ghana," said the 33-year-old.
Gyan, who played in three World Cups, is Ghana's record scorer with 51 goals in 106 appearances and currently plays for Kayserispor in Turkey. It is unclear whether he will still have the captaincy at the Africa Cup of Nations or, as was widely reported in Ghana, it will be handed to André Ayew.

LONDON • Fulham were the perfect opponents for a team hoping not to expend unnecessary energy before facing Paris Saint-Germain.
Manchester United did not have to be at their dashing best yesterday to continue their resurgence under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, but they still could have scored a hatful as they regained a spot in the top four of the Premier League for the first time since the opening weekend of the season.
They settled for a 3-0 win in the end and Solskjaer was able to keep Marcus Rashford and Jesse Lingard on the bench before United welcome PSG to Old Trafford for the first leg of their last-16 Champions League tie on Tuesday night.
A brace from Paul Pogba and a sensational solo goal from Anthony Martial were enough for the Premier League's form side, who have picked up 25 points from nine games since replacing Jose Mourinho with Solskjaer in December.
Pogba later fired a warning to the chasing pack that they intend "to stay there", adding: "It feels great. That's what we wanted, since Ole came, the top four.
"We have big games coming up, so it won't be easy. But we put in a good performance as a team.

EYES ON THE PRIZE
We have big games coming up, so it won't be easy. But we put in a good performance as a team. When we need three points, we get the three points.
PAUL POGBA, Manchester United midfielder, looking ahead to the coming run of tough fixtures that will likely determine his team's final position at the end of the season.

"When we need three points, we get the three points. But these big games coming up will determine where we end up. I feel great, the team feels good."
While United's supporters revelled in watching the legendary figure in the dugout mastermind another victory, Fulham's fans booed Claudio Ranieri down the tunnel after the final whistle.
The odds are against the team with the worst defensive record in the division, with 58 goals conceded, pulling off a miraculous escape given that they are seven points adrift of 17th place with 12 games remaining.
Craven Cottage, normally such a genteel place to watch a game of football, was an angry place with fans aiming chants of "You don't know what you're doing" at a manager who appears to have run out of ideas after three months in the job.
Curiously, it was the wind, which made the ball move weirdly in the air, and not their opponents that took United a while to get used to.

But it was not long before Pogba decided it was time to take charge in the middle of the park. The France midfielder's authority on the ball settled his teammates and it soon became clear United had a plan to get Martial running at Denis Odoi.
Pogba has been involved in 13 league goals under Solskjaer, scoring eight and creating five, and he eased United ahead with a powerful strike in the 14th minute.
In the 23rd minute, Martial produced a moment of magic in keeping with United's scintillating counter-attacking traditions. The forward started his run just inside his own half as he ignored Odoi's attempts to bring him down, shimmied past Maxime Le Marchand and opened up his body to curl a lovely shot into the far corner.
They added another when strong work from Romelu Lukaku led to Le Marchand bringing down Juan Mata just inside the box.
Pogba dispatched his penalty with aplomb and United spent the final 25 minutes keeping their powder dry for PSG.
Solskjaer said that while there was a chance his tinkering could have backfired, his footballing philosophy was "if you don't risk, you don't win".
The Norwegian said: "I have to trust the players, I didn't feel there was a problem playing any of them."

At Ajax, young stars stay with the club just long enough

AMSTERDAM • Last summer, seven of Ajax's brightest stars were summoned to a room at the Dutch club's training facility. Edwin van der Sar, the goalkeeper-turned-chief executive, and Marc Overmars, once a jet-heeled winger and now the Ajax sporting director, had a video to show them.
Its premise was simple. Each player was paired with an iconic figure from Ajax's illustrious history, one who shared a position, a nationality or (in one case) a bloodline:

  • Goalkeeper Andre Onana had van der Sar.

  • Forward Kasper Dolberg got Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

  • Justin Kluivert was juxtaposed with his father, Patrick.

  • Frenkie de Jong had Christian Eriksen.

  • Matthijs de Ligt was compared to Barry Hulshoff, a defender from the all-conquering 1970s team.

The idea, van der Sar said, was to "show them how to become a legend at Ajax, and in Holland".
The film was designed to persuade the club's crown jewels, to resist the temptation to move to England, Spain or Italy for another year or so, to "stay with each other, to win prizes and trophies here and then make the next step".
The tactic worked. Six of them should feature when they host Real Madrid in the last 16 of the Champions League on Wednesday. De Ligt will marshal the defence. De Jong will orchestrate the attacks.
Only one will be absent: Kluivert resisted the emotional overture to follow in his father's footsteps. He refused to extend his contract and was sold to Roma.
At Ajax, they understand why he made that decision - the allure, for a teenager with a famous name, of forging his own path. But, when they mention Kluivert now, it is with a hint of regret, a tinge of frustration. Not because he left, but because he left so soon.
"If a player goes after just half a year in the first team, like Kluivert, we are disappointed," said Said Ouaali, director of De Toekomst, Ajax's famed youth academy.

THE AJAX WAY
We focus always on the individual. We don't think about age groups, like the Dutch federation or like other clubs.
SAID OUAALI, director of De Toekomst, the Ajax academy.

Last month, Ajax made another video. This time, it was for public consumption, posted on the club's social media channels. It was a little more than a minute long, but it showcased all of what Erik ten Hag, Ajax's manager, called de Jong's "special qualities". It was titled Frenkie Futuro and was released to celebrate the confirmation of the 21-year-old's move to Barcelona, set to be completed this summer.
De Jong is the shining light of the team, a player so promising that he has, more than once, been compared to Johan Cruyff himself.
Yet there was no regret at his departure. "Barcelona, enjoy the future, like we do," Ajax wrote on their official Twitter account.
Ten Hag might allow himself to wonder a little, he said, at what could happen if "I could keep them for two or three years", into their prime but that is it.
"I will be proud," he said. "The scouts who found them will be proud. Marc Overmars will be proud. Everyone will be."
This is what Ajax have always done. Since Cruyff himself left for Barcelona in 1973, they have churned out a stream of talent for others to enjoy: Johan Neeskens, Marco van Basten, Frank Rijkaard, Clarence Seedorf, Edgar Davids, the elder Kluivert, Wesley Sneijder, Rafael van der Vaart, Eriksen, Ibrahimovic, Jan Vertonghen, Luis Suarez.
The formula that has allowed it to do so hangs on the wall in ten Hag's office, opposite a series of black-and-white portraits of Rinus Michels, the mastermind of the great team of the 1970s; Cruyff, their star; and Louis van Gaal, the man who restored Ajax to the European pinnacle in the 1990s, with an almost entirely home-grown team.
Ten Hag laughs when he looks at that wall - "They set you a standard," he said, blowing out his cheeks. But he is serious when he discusses the Ajacied, a cross between a mission statement and a creed for the club.
These are the traits the club seek to instil in every player who wears their jersey, or who passes through De Toekomst, as well as their coaches and staff. There are 11 of them; this being Ajax, they are set out in a 4-3-3 formation. They range from taking responsibility and initiative to remaining disciplined and having fun.
The approach clearly works. But that is not to say it has not been adapted, altered, fine-tuned over the years. That process started in 2011 when Cruyff returned to a club that, in van der Sar's words, "did not feel like Ajax any more".
Cruyff and the cadre of former players he brought with him wanted not only to restore the focus on youth development, to shed highly paid, ageing players, but also to change the way Ajax worked.
The club recognised, too, they had to work faster. Players were no longer staying in the Eredivisie until they were 23 or 24; they were leaving at 20 or 21, if not earlier.
Their second team - Jong Ajax - who play in the second tier, no longer would be filled with senior players; now, most of their members are still in their teenage years.
"We had to speed up the process," ten Hag said. "They had to be good quicker."
De Jong and de Ligt might not have won a trophy but, by carrying Ajax to a meeting with Real in the last 16 of the Champions League, they have "given something back", as van der Sar put it.
When they - and possibly other members of the seven - depart Amsterdam Arena, they will go with the best wishes of the club, and then the whole system will start again.
That, after all, is Ajax's real gift: their ability not to produce one player, or one generation of them, but to keep on going. It is what makes players' leaving not only desirable but necessary.
"We have to give the path to the next one," van der Sar said.
"If players stay too long, the next one cannot play. The whole thing chokes."

Football: Jesus shines as City regain top spot, Eriksen fires Spurs

LONDON (AFP) - Manchester City swept back to the top of the Premier League as Gabriel Jesus struck twice in the champions’ 3-1 win over Everton, while Christian Eriksen kept Tottenham in the title hunt in a last-gasp 1-0 victory against Burnley on Saturday (Dec 15).
Jesus hadn’t scored a Premier League goal since August, but the Brazilian striker ended that drought to put Everton to the sword at the Etihad Stadium.
The 21-year-old’s goals and a strike from Raheem Sterling put City two points ahead of second-placed Liverpool, but Jurgen Klopp’s team can regain top spot if they beat bitter rivals Manchester United at Anfield on Sunday.
City coach Pep Guardiola, whose team had surrendered pole position with their loss at Chelsea last weekend, was pleased to see Jesus get back on track.
“It is so important for him, strikers need to score goals,” said Guardiola.
“What he has done today, he has done in other games but the difference is he has scored goals.
“He has done it in a fantastic way. It was so valuable, his performance.”
Jesus opened the scoring in the 22nd minute with a cool finish from a tight angle after Leroy Sane’s pass opened up the Everton defence.
Guardiola’s side had to wait just five minutes after the break to make it 2-0, when patient build-up found Sane on the left and the German’s cross was met by a bullet header from Jesus.
Everton got back into the game in the 65th minute when Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s header from a high-hanging Digne cross flicking off Fabian Delph and past the helpless Ederson.
But Sterling came off the bench to end the contest four minutes later when the City winger met Fernandinho’s cross with a firm header.
City were also cheered by the return of playmaker Kevin De Bruyne as a 75th minute substitute after a six-week lay-off with his second knee injury of the season.

Late show for Spurs

At Wembley, Tottenham left it until stoppage-time before finally breaking Burnley’s stubborn resistance as the north London club moved within five points of the leaders.
Mauricio Pochettino’s third-placed side featured a first league start for 18-year-old midfielder Oliver Skipp, with Eriksen and Son Heung-Min on the bench.

Joe Hart kept fourth-from-bottom Burnley level when the former England keeper plunged low to his right to save Erik Lamela’s low shot.
But Denmark playmaker Eriksen came on in the second half and he provided the match-winning moment with a clipped finish after Fernando Llorente and Harry Kane battered down the Burnley barricades in the 90th minute.
Eriksen’s winner capped a fine few days for Tottenham, who qualified for the Champions League last 16 in midweek after drawing 1-1 at Barcelona.
“It is a very good week for us, a fantastic win for us today, it is so important to be focused and try to keep our energy,” Pochettino said.
“After the Barcelona game it is difficult to find the way to perform like this.”
Wolves are up to seventh as Raul Jimenez and Ivan Cavaleiro wrapped up a 2-0 win at Molineux that condemned Bournemouth to a sixth defeat in their last seven games.
West Ham’s fourth straight win moved Manuel Pellegrini’s side into ninth and inflicted more pain on bottom club Fulham as Robert Snodgrass and Michail Antonio struck in the opening half hour for a 2-0 victory at Craven Cottage.
Watford are just behind the Hammers on goal difference thanks to a stylish 3-2 win over Cardiff at Vicarage Road.
Javi Gracia’s team were cruising thanks to three wonder goals from Gerard Deulofeu, Jose Holebas and teenager Domingos Quina with his first Premier League goal.
But Cardiff set up a tense finish through Junior Hoilett in the 80th minute before Bobby Reid’s strike two minutes later.
Luka Milivojevic lifted Crystal Palace five points away from the bottom three as the Serbia midfielder’s superb strike clinched a 1-0 victory against Leicester for the Eagles’ first Premier League victory without suspended talisman Wilfried Zaha since September 2016.
Newcastle also eased their relegation worries as Salomon Rondon’s 55th minute goal earned a 1-0 victory at Huddersfield, who remain in the bottom three.

Football: Hougang United out to avenge March 3 thrashing by Tampines Rovers in SPL

SINGAPORE - What a difference two months can make. On March 3, Tampines Rovers and Hougang United lined up in a lip-smacking opener to the Singapore Premier League (SPL) season, touted as a clash between potential title rivals.
Tampines trotted off the pitch at the Jalan Besar Stadium with a handsome 5-1 win, aided by a red card to Hougang's Justin Hui, which preceded the Stags' four second-half goals.
Since then, however, the two teams have had contrasting fortunes in the SPL.
Hougang have won five of their seven games and currently sit second. Tampines, meanwhile, have not won any of their last four league matches and are fourth in the nine-team SPL.
As the teams prepare to meet again on Sunday (May 5) at Our Tampines Hub, Hougang are eager to prove that the first result between the two sides this season was one off.
"We all know Tampines are a good team, there's no denying that," said star attacker Faris Ramli, who has scored six SPL goals this season.
"But we all know the 5-1 scoreline did not reflect the game. We suffered a red card at 1-0 down and they made use of the extra player to score more.

"The fact we managed to equalise (to 1-1) with 10 men shows we have the quality to match them."
Tampines coach Gavin Lee was also keen to downplay the thrashing earlier this term.
"In terms of whether the scoreline reflected the quality of both teams, I think it didn't," said Lee.
"Both sides have good sets of players, but on that day and in that game, we were the better team and they didn't perform, and when those two factors come together, that (big win) can happen.
"Are we expecting a similar scoreline on Sunday? No. They'll definitely be fired up to prove the previous result was a fluke."
On Tampines' recent struggles in the league, Lee said the team's exertions in the AFC Cup - games usually take place in mid-week - have affected their consistency. Most recently, the Stags needed a last-minute goal to beat Myanmarese champions Yangon United, at Jalan Besar on Wednesday (May 1).
The 28-year-old acknowledged that the continental competition is "not easy physically" on his players as the matches are played at "an international tempo".
Lee added: "We've spoken about it as a team and we know it's part of the privilege of playing in a continental tournament... Whether (fatigue) will play a big part on Sunday, I don't know.
"But we've done our usual recovery protocols and hope the players are fresh, and physically and tactically ready."
Despite their good run of form, Hougang are looking to avoid a second loss on the trot, following their gutwrenching 3-2 defeat in injury time to league leaders Brunei DPMM last Sunday. The Cheetahs had led 2-1, and a win would have taken them top of the SPL.
"The loss was a hard pill to swallow, but we've addressed it as a team and we are in better spirits now," said Faris.
"This season, we have shown we have the mental strength to bounce back from our two (previous) losses by winning the next game both times, and we will have to do it again.
"We have shown we are capable of competing at the top of the SPL, so this is a game we definitely want to take three points from."

PARMA, Italy (REUTERS) - Fabio Quagliarella became Italy's oldest goalscorer as his double helped Roberto Mancini's rejuvenated side thrash 10-man Liechtenstein 6-0 in their second Euro 2020 qualifier on Tuesday (March 26).
Quagliarella, 36, netted two first-half penalties, while 19-year-old Moise Kean scored his second goal in his third appearance. Stefano Sensi, Marco Verratti and Leonardo Pavoletti also found the net.
Liechtenstein were reduced to 10 men on the stroke of halftime when Daniel Kaufmann was sent off for a handball on his goalline.
Italy, who have a maximum six points in Group J after a 2-0 win against Finland on Saturday, controlled the midfield through Verratti while Quagliarella set an example with his aggression.
The Azzurri, who are rebuilding under Mancini after missing out on the 2018 World Cup, broke the deadlock after 17 minutes as the 23-year-old Sensi's header from Leonardo Spinazzola's cross from the left found the roof of the net.
Verratti doubled the tally with a fine curled shot into the far side of the goal on 32 minutes.
Quagliarella scored his first goal from the penalty spot after a Nicolas Hasler handball, and his second after Kaufmann also used his arm and was shown a straight red card.
Christian Panucci was Italy's previous oldest goalscorer at 35 years 62 days.
Kean, who had endured a frustrating first half, headed home the fifth on 70 minutes with second-half substitute Pavoletti adding the sixth on his international debut, tapping in after Benjamin Buechel had parried the 30-year-old's header into his path.
Italy next travel to Greece on June 8.
