Motivated for london derby
LONDON • Despite claiming that Tottenham's English Premier League title hopes are over, Mauricio Pochettino believes his players will still be motivated to give their best shot when they host Arsenal at Wembley today.
Spurs were dreaming of a title challenge just a week ago, but back-to-back defeats by Burnley and Chelsea mean that even their top-four spot is now in danger.
But the Tottenham manager remained hopeful for today's north London derby, saying: "Of course to motivate for this type of game is an easy job.
"We don't need to motivate the players. We know very well what it means to play against Arsenal.
"We know that we're going to be very motivated and we'll have a team that is very motivated, too."
Third-placed Spurs are on 60 points and their lead over the Gunners is down to just four, with Manchester United and Chelsea also close behind in the race for the final two Champions League places next season.

"Of course it's going to be tough, They have very good players, they are doing a very good job," the Argentinian added.
"But my team is doing a fantastic job in the last five years. I can talk from where we have arrived. We are changing that perception that Tottenham were a little bit soft."
Following today's match, Tottenham still have to travel to title-chasing Liverpool and Manchester City in the final nine games of the league campaign.
Much of the damage done in the past week will be forgotten should Spurs bounce back in the derby and open up what ought to be a decisive seven-point advantage over Arsenal.
For Unai Emery, a thrilling 4-2 win over Tottenham in early December was the highlight of his first season as Arsenal boss.
However, in contrast to their stunning form at the Emirates, Arsenal have won just once on the road in the Premier League in their past seven games and that was at rock-bottom Huddersfield.
Emery's embarrassment of riches going forward was demonstrated in a 5-1 thrashing of Bournemouth on Wednesday.
However, the Spaniard has struggled to find the right balance as Arsenal have not kept a clean sheet away from home in the Premier League all season.
There would be no better way for him to win over a still-unconvinced fan base than by curing his side's travel sickness today and delivering another blow to Spurs and solidifying Arsenal's own position.
Emery, though, knows it is no easy task to play at Wembley.
"There was a 10-point difference two weeks ago and now it's four points. We are playing for three points and more," he said at his press conference yesterday.
"But each derby is different. Playing home and away can be very different. Matches like tomorrow the players know it's important first to get three points and because it is special for the supporters.
"We must play with confidence and keep our minds free."

Afghan chief denies abusing women

Afghan chief denies abusing women
KABUL • Afghanistan's football boss Keramuddin Karim on Monday rejected allegations he sexually and physically abused members of the women's national team, suggesting that his accusers may have invented the claims to help their applications for asylum in Europe.
Karim has been accused of punching, raping and threatening female players, including holding a gun to one's head, in allegations first reported by Britain's The Guardian newspaper in November.
An investigation into the claims is ongoing but, in an interview with AFP, he was confident that his name would be cleared.
"I strongly deny these allegations," said Karim, who has been suspended from his position as president of the Afghanistan Football Federation (AFF) pending the outcome of the investigation.
"This is a conspiracy. There has been no evidence or proof provided, only a number of unidentified voices, anonymous identities, have made the allegations."
He said his accusers might be using the serious allegations to "seek asylum in Europe", or they might be people who are "conspiring to defame us, hurt us in the federation".
"They are inside and outside the country plotting against us," Karim said, refusing to name the people he was referring to.
He also told AFP he was cooperating with investigators from Afghanistan's Attorney-General's Office, which last Friday slapped a flight ban on him and four other federation officials after suspending them from their positions.
World governing body Fifa has also suspended Karim for 90 days.
He added: "I personally am not aware of such things taking place.
"As a father and a husband, I have been affected (by the claims), it has been painful."

Football: Bale 100 per cent committed to Real, claims agent

Football: Bale 100 per cent committed to Real, claims agent

LONDON (AFP) – Gareth Bale is still “100 per cent” committed to Real Madrid despite speculation over his future, the Wales star’s agent insisted on Monday (April 29).
Former Tottenham winger Bale has been linked with a return to the Premier League after a difficult season with the troubled Spanish club.
The 29-year-old has had to endure claims that he doesn’t have a strong relationship with his team-mates, while Real have suffered a woeful campaign on the pitch.
Bale played the full 90 minutes when Real suffered a shock 1-0 defeat against lowly Rayo Vallecano on Sunday, but Madrid boss Zinedine Zidane later questioned whether he was fully focused.
Bale’s agent Jonathan Barnett has responded to Zidane’s comments by telling BBC Sport Wales: “Gareth is 100 per cent committed to Real Madrid.”
Referring to his past assertion that Bale wanted to spend the rest of his career with Madrid, Barnett added: “Nothing has changed.”
Frustrated at a lack of starting opportunities for Real towards the end of last season, Bale had actually hinted he might consider leaving when he spoke to the media immediately after scoring twice in last year’s Champions League final win against Liverpool.
Bale’s Madrid contract runs until 2022, but the return of Zidane, with whom he reportedly has a difficult relationship, has revived talk of a potential move.
Despite winning four Champions League trophies and one La Liga title in Spain, Bale has come under-fire for his inconsistent performances and injury problems from Real fans.
Zidane, who is back after quitting at the end of last season, recently warned Real stars who are unhappy with their playing time should “go elsewhere and get more minutes”.
Manchester United and Tottenham are among the clubs said to be interested if Wales international Bale wants to leave the Bernabeu.

Football: Gonzalo Higuain must earn permanent Chelsea deal: Maurizio Sarri

Football: Gonzalo Higuain must earn permanent Chelsea deal: Maurizio Sarri

LONDON (AFP) - Chelsea manager Maurizio Sarri is confident Gonzalo Higuain can be the short-term solution to his side's need for goals and urged the Argentinian to earn a permanent move to the Premier League.
Higuain sealed a loan move until the end of the season on Wednesday (Jan 23) from parent club Juventus having spent a troubled first half of the campaign on loan at AC Milan.
Sarri has fond memories of his one previous season together with Higuain when the striker scored a record 36 Serie A goals in a single campaign.
Now he hopes Higuain can reignite Chelsea's spluttering attack and earn a long-term switch to Stamford Bridge in the process.
"For sure, he is one of the best strikers in my career," said Sarri, who will have to cope without Higuain for Thursday's League Cup semi-final, second leg against Tottenham.
"It's up to him, I think. He has to score, first of all. I think that for a long-term contract, he has to do very well.
"He has to play. He has to score. He has to be useful for the team."
After an excellent start to Sarri's reign in charge, Chelsea have stumbled since losing for the first time under the Italian against Spurs at the end of November.
A run of four defeats in 11 Premier League games has coincided with Sarri's decision to move Eden Hazard into the middle of his front three with the Belgian's impact limited.
Higuain has struggled since being forced out of Juventus in the summer by the arrival of Cristiano Ronaldo, scoring just eight times in 22 appearances for Milan.
Sarri, though, believes he is the best proven goalscorer Chelsea could have added this month.
"Higuain usually is able to score 25 or 30 goals every season," he added.
"As I told you before, in the market in January it's very difficult to secure a very important striker.
"Gonzalo was in a situation that we could try to buy him, and so we decided to try for Higuain."
However, Sarri explained that decision was in part forced by Alvaro Morata's desire to leave Chelsea.
The Spaniard cost a then club record £60 million (S$106.6 million) when he signed from Real Madrid in July 2017, but now seems set for a loan move to Atletico Madrid to make way for Higuain.
"I think that Morata is a very good player. I think that Morata has the characteristics for playing in my team," added Sarri.
"But Morata, one month ago, said he wanted to play in another team. So it was really very difficult for him to give us the 100 per cent for his mental situation, I think.
"From the physical and technical point of view, he is a very good player and suitable for my football. But the situation changed in the last month. So we needed to change."

Football: Messi double sends Barcelona 13 points clear

MADRID (AFP) - Lionel Messi continued his remarkable run of form with a second-half double as Barcelona continued their march towards the La Liga title on Saturday (March 30) with a 2-0 win over Espanyol.
The visitors gave their city rivals a tough game at the Camp Nou, but Messi's chipped free-kick with 19 minutes to play and a late second sent the reigning champions 13 points clear at the top ahead of second-placed Atletico Madrid's game at Alaves later on Saturday.
Messi has now netted eight times in his last four games for Barca, and leads the way in the La Liga scoring charts with 31 goals, 13 ahead of teammate Luis Suarez.
"I had no idea he would hit (the free-kick) like that," said Barcelona coach Ernesto Valverde.
"I would love to say that we had planned it, but it's not true, it's up to him. He didn't need my opinion and he scored."
It was a fitting way for the Argentinian to mark his 675th Barcelona appearance, which moved him ahead of Andres Iniesta into second on the club's all-time list - 102 adrift of Xavi Hernandez.
He made a low-key return to international action in midweek as Argentina lost a friendly to Venezuela, but Valverde was delighted it did not affect Messi on Saturday.
"Messi is the same player no matter what team he is playing in," he said.
"He would be the same if he played in Australia... We are delighted to have him, it's a luxury for me to coach him."

BARCA FRUSTRATED

Barca struggled to break down Espanyol early on, with Messi, Suarez and Ivan Rakitic all wasting half-chances in the first period.
Barcelona saw a penalty appeal waved away by both the referee and VAR on the stroke of half-time, and Malcom was denied just after the hour mark by away goalkeeper Diego Lopez as the Catalan giants grew frustrated.
But Messi has been consistently unplayable this season, and he dinked in a wonderful effort from a set-piece despite Victor Sanchez's best efforts to clear off the line.
The three points were sealed in the 89th minute as Malcom ran clear on the breakaway, before cutting the ball across for Messi to sweep a trademark finish low into the bottom corner.
Barcelona next visit Villarreal on Tuesday with a second successive title looking even more like a mere formality after a sixth straight victory extended their unbeaten league run to 17 matches.
Earlier on Saturday, fourth-placed Getafe missed the chance to solidify their spot in the Champions League places as they slumped to a 2-0 home defeat by Leganes.
Uruguayan Michael Santos and Spaniard Juanfran scored in the second half for Leganes to give Alaves the chance to move into the top four with a win over Atletico.

Football: Milan draw another blank in Frosinone stalemate as pressure piles on Gattuso

MILAN (REUTERS) - AC Milan completed four Serie A games without scoring for the first time since 1984 when they were held 0-0 at next-to-bottom Frosinone on Wednesday (Dec 26).
As speculation mounted about his future, beleaguered Milan coach Gennaro Gattuso admitted his side were "dreadful" in the first half against the team with Serie A's worst defensive record.
"We handed it to our opponents: we were not on the field, we lost all the 50-50 balls. We knew it would be difficult and we could easily have lost it," said Gattuso, whose side have not scored for 379 minutes.
"We played a dreadful first half. I cannot accept a performance like that. We can't play like that if we want to qualify for the Champions League," he added.
Samu Castillejo hit the post for Milan while Frosinone, who have shipped 36 goals in 18 games, had a goal disallowed before half time.
Camillo Ciano volleyed home from Raffaele Maiello's pass but, following a Video Assistant Referee review, the referee ruled that Maiello had fouled Hakan Calhangolu as he won the ball in midfield.
In an end-to-end finale, Milan striker Gonzalo Higuain fired over the bar from 12 metres in stoppage time from Calhanoglu's inviting pass as he completed his ninth game without scoring.
Goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma came to Milan's rescue with an excellent save from Ciano's low drive.
Milan stayed fifth with 28 points, outside the Champions League places, and are in danger of being engulfed by a pack of teams just below them.
The last time Milan went four league games against scoring was under coach Nils Liedholm in 1984-85 when their rivals were Torino, Avellino, Hellas Verona and Sampdoria.
"We need to score goals and we weren't precise enough. We missed all the chances that came our way," Gattuso said.

The result, and another lacklustre performance, against the team with Serie A's worst defensive record heaped more pressure on Milan's beleaguered coach Gennaro Gattuso. Italian media reported

A night they won't forget

They had already spent about $2,000 each for flights and accommodation, and were planning to try their luck with scalpers for the Champions League final tickets in Madrid.
Dinesh Kumar, a 34-year-old Liverpool fan, and his 62-year-old Tottenham-supporting father Dewadas Vellasamy, were willing to pay about $6,000 each but were quoted almost $10,000 each and decided to pass.
Yet the duo, who were part of a group of 20 Singaporeans who had made their way to the Spanish capital last week, still had the time of their lives on Saturday with the football festivities that unfolded outside the Wanda Metropolitano Stadium as Liverpool beat Tottenham 2-0 to lift their sixth European Cup.
Dinesh, who works in the oil and gas industry, told The Straits Times: "It was hot and humid and we were surprised the Liverpool fan zone at Plaza Felipe II had no live screening. We were directed to bars, but they were fully booked and the commentary was in Spanish.
"In the end, we found an Indian bistro which was willing to let us to make a booking and watch the game. Fans from Hong Kong, Australia, Egypt, Malaysia, India and England started streaming in.
"There were so many fans like us who did not have tickets, but we ended up having a crazy party.
"At the final whistle, we were in tears because some of us went to Kiev last year when Liverpool lost and this felt like consolation.
"We went to the fan zone again where people gathered and celebrated with song and dance until 6am."
Dewadas, a retiree who has supported Tottenham since 1974, added: "Naturally, we Spurs fans are quite disappointed. I feel Liverpool won by luck because of the penalty and Alisson's saves.
"But I'm also very happy to be part of history with Tottenham's first Champions League final and witness in person what fans are willing to do for the love of their clubs."
Aaron Kok, a Liverpool fan who runs The Experiences Firm that took 11 fans to Madrid, was impressed by the respect both sets of fans showed despite the intense rivalry.
The 42-year-old said: "Spurs fans deserve huge credit. Visibly fewer in numbers, they were still great sport and created insane noise and atmosphere. They were respectful with friendly banter which should be how all sports fans should behave regardless of the team we support."
He and two other Liverpool fans left their hotel at 4am yesterday to begin a 12-hour commute by plane and car to Merseyside via Rome and London for the trophy parade.
Kok said: "This trip to Liverpool is really quite illogical as there was no guarantee of victory and we could have gone to a very sad city. But life has to be lived through the heart as much as the brain."
Meanwhile, fans in Singapore had various options to follow Saturday's action, including at the Osim Sundown Marathon, where around 300 people gathered to watch the live telecast on a big screen at the runners' village.
After completing the half-marathon in a black Liverpool kit, Eddy Chua, a 22-year-old national serviceman, said: "There was a very lively atmosphere. Even though we were all tired after the run, we kept the atmosphere going.
"I was there alone, but it felt like I was there with friends as we were in it together, cheering for our team when Liverpool scored.
"I supported Liverpool only since 2006 and, from that time on, our only major trophy was the League Cup in 2012. But the Champions League win was our moment to tell the world that this is our time."
Tottenham fan Raama Subramaniyam, a 42-year-old who was also clad in his Spurs jersey, added: "I like the set-up of the live screening, it was well organised and the sound system was good. I just wish I had more friends and Spurs fans around me.
"It was quite a boring game, to be honest. The three-week break after the last Premier League game caused both teams' form to drop and they were both so cautious.
"Spurs attacked in the second half, but didn't convert (their chances), so hard luck to them and congratulations to Liverpool."

Football: River crush Kashima to finish third in Club World Cup

ABU DHABI (REUTERS) - South American champions River Plate thrashed Japanese side Kashima Antlers 4-0 in the third place playoff at the Club World Cup on Saturday (Dec 22).
Argentine side River, who beat arch-rivals Boca Juniors to win the Copa Libertadores this month but suffered a humiliating defeat by Al Ain in a penalty shootout in the semi-finals, took the lead midway through the first half with a header from midfielder Bruno Zuculini.
Gonzalo "Pity" Martinez signed off from a memorable career with the Argentine club, including two Copa Libertadores triumphs, by scoring twice in the second half after coming off the bench in his last appearance before heading to MLS side Atlanta United.
Martinez increased River's lead in the 73rd minute and completed the thrashing with a chipped finish in stoppage time after Colombian striker Rafael Santos Borre had scored the third goal from the penalty spot.

Valencia coach unfazed by Europa League 'favourites' Arsenal in semis

Valencia coach unfazed by Europa League 'favourites' Arsenal in semis
VALENCIA • Valencia coach Marcelino has started the mind games by saying Arsenal are "the favourites" in their Europa League semi-final next month.
The Spanish team, owned by Singaporean billionaire Peter Lim, eased into the Europe's second-tier club competition for the first time in five years - a 2-0 home win over fellow LaLiga side Villarreal on Thursday giving them a resounding 5-1 aggregate scoreline.
Toni Lato and Dani Parejo scored the goals that secured the victory and set up a meeting with Arsenal and Valencia's former coach Unai Emery after the London side won 1-0 at Napoli and 3-0 on aggregate.
Full-back Lato strolled into a gaping hole in defence to volley Valencia in front in the 13th minute at a rain-swept Mestalla to settle the home side, who enjoyed a 3-1 win at Villarreal in the first leg.
The lead was doubled early in the second half with a free kick by captain Parejo, which took a deflection off defender Ramiro Funes Mori.
The only disappointment for Marcelino's side is that their former Arsenal midfielder Francis Coquelin is suspended for the first leg at the Emirates Stadium on May 2 after a late booking for handball.

"We are very excited about the prospect of reaching another final in our centenary year," said Marcelino, whose side will play Barcelona in the King's Cup final on May 25.
"Arsenal have great players and a coach who knows us perfectly well, so they are one of the favourites.
"But, in a semi-final, anything can happen. Perhaps they will be under a bigger obligation to win than us, but we have the same excitement."
Emery coached Valencia between 2008 and 2012, securing three top-three finishes in a row.
He later eliminated Valencia in the 2014 Europa League semi-finals when in charge of Sevilla, who edged into the final on away goals after snatching a 3-3 aggregate draw with a stoppage-time goal.
Valencia striker Santi Mina added: "Arsenal are a very difficult side, but we are Valencia and we can compete with anybody.
"We've already reached the King's Cup final... and we want to give the fans something more to shout about."

Football: Neymar hints at joining Real Madrid

SAO PAULO (AFP) - Paris Saint-Germain star Neymar on Sunday (March 3) left the door open for a potential move to Spanish giants Real Madrid.
The world's most expensive footballer is currently recovering from a foot injury which he suffered on January 23 and has been linked with a return to La Liga ever since he joined PSG from Barcelona in 2017.
"In the future, everything is possible," he told Brazilian television channel Globo.
"I'm not saying I'm going to Real Madrid, calm down. Everybody knows I have already accomplished my dream which was (playing for) Barcelona.
"Real Madrid is one of the biggest teams in the world, every player perceived to have an interest in the club wants to play for them. Right now I'm very happy in Paris." Neymar said Barcelona's Lionel Messi had sent him his regards after hearing about the Brazilian's most recent injury.
"At the time I needed support the most, from people and the team, the best in the world came to me to say 'I'm here to help you'," Neymar said.
The 27-year-old said PSG teammate Kylian Mbappe will be one of the world's greatest ever players despite the pair both eyeing the biggest individual prizes in the sport.

"He's going to become one of the best players in the history of football and I'm trying to help him as best as possible. We have the same friendship as I had with Lionel, even competing for the Ballon d'Or," he said.
Neymar will miss Wednesday's Champions League last-16 return leg against Manchester United with the metatarsal problem he suffered six weeks ago.
He was sidelined for three months of last season with the same issue, returning just in time to play at the World Cup.
PSG anticipate he will be back in time for a potential European quarter-final in April.

Football: Guardiola unhappy as City keep pace with Liverpool in Huddersfield win

Football: Guardiola unhappy as City keep pace with Liverpool in Huddersfield win

HUDDERSFIELD (AFP) - Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola was far from satisfied despite a 3-0 win away to Huddersfield Town on Sunday (Jan 20) that saw his side cut Liverpool's lead at the top of the Premier League table to four points.
Liverpool's compelling 4-3 win over Crystal Palace on Saturday heaped huge pressure back onto reigning champions City but they were rarely troubled by a Town side that look a certain bet for relegation this season.
City's first goal, a deflected strike for Danilo in the 18th minute, brought up their 100th goal of the season in all competitions before Raheem Sterling scored a diving header from Leroy Sane's cross in the 54th minute and Sane himself made it 3-0 with a calm finish just two minutes later.
For Guardiola, it should have been an afternoon of enjoyment as his side again proved their willingness to push Liverpool all the way this season.
The City manager, however, has forged a footballing reputation based on sublime performances as well as ruthless goalscoring and, on that basis, his team's showing in West Yorkshire was not a success as the visitors never really clicked into gear on a day against a Huddersfield side who had parted company with manager David Wagner on Monday.

'Improve in the future'

"During the season you have these kind of games," Guardiola said. "It is important to win. We have scored many goals in all competitions.
"(But) the way we played, we didn't deserve more than three goals. We will improve in the future.
"We have to demand more from ourselves in every game and do our best, but sometimes it's difficult.
"Today we are happy we have won but after immediately we have to analyse. During the season you have games when maybe you are not in the top level and it is important to win these games."
Although City's fans were happier than their manager following this result, Guardiola could at least take some heart from the fact his side again refused to blink first in the race for the title.
For the second consecutive week, City kicked off knowing Liverpool had already won their weekend fixture and that, consequently, the onus was back on his players to secure three points as well.
Once again, Guardiola's side managed to do that following up the 3-0 victory over Wolves with this showing and the City manager was more than happy to remind everybody that silverware is not handed out for another four months.
"One team has been better but we're in January and there's many more games to play," he added.
"You don't win or lose the Premier League in January. We have to focus on what we have to do. If Liverpool win, we have to win. And if Liverpool lose then we also have to win." This match was a baptism of fire for Huddersfield's caretaker boss Mark Hudson and while the Terriers showed impressive fight to inspire some hope this season, this defeat still left them 10 points adrift of safety.
If, as expected, the Borussia Dortmund Under-23 coach Jan Siewert is appointed as Wagner's permanent replacement, nobody would blame him if he spent his first day in the job preparing for a return to the second-tier Championship next season.
"It's been a long week," admitted Hudson.

ENGLISH PREMIER LEAGUE

Leicester 0
Manchester United 1

LONDON • The Ole Gunnar Solskjaer bandwagon rolls on.
For the first time since the days when Sir Alex Ferguson was in charge, back in the 2012-13 season, Manchester United have racked up five successive away victories.
The latest came courtesy of another goal from Marcus Rashford, who marked his 100th Premier League appearance in style with his sixth goal in Solskjaer's 10 games in charge.
From Leicester's perspective, it was an awful goal to concede.
Ricardo Pereira, picking up the ball deep inside the Leicester half, played a loose and careless pass that was intended for Nampalys Mendy.
Paul Pogba easily cut the ball out and flighted a perfectly weighted pass in behind Harry Maguire and Ben Chilwell. Rashford cushioned the ball beautifully with his first touch and thrashed it home powerfully and unerringly with his second, giving Kasper Schmeichel no chance with nine minutes gone.

BATTLING WIN
That pass by Paul Pogba is great and the control by Marcus better. Football is a game of mistakes. Our lads, when we make mistakes, they were fighting for the ball and giving their all.
OLE GUNNAR SOLSKJAER, Manchester United interim manager, in awe over his side's goal and display against Leicester.

At that stage, United were in total control, playing with freedom and confidence and it was easy to fear for Leicester.
Yet slowly but surely, Claude Puel's side managed to eke their way back into the game and cause United a few problems at the other end.
Leicester looked particularly dangerous from corners, where James Maddison's excellent delivery was causing consternation in the United area. Jonny Evans, the former United defender, was unlucky to see a glancing header drift wide.
It was Maddison who had Leicester's best chance during that period. The ball broke kindly to the midfielder after ricocheting between a couple of United players, and everything pointed to an equaliser when he prepared to shoot from little more than 12 yards out, only for Luke Shaw to get across and make a superb block.
United seemed to be playing within themselves a little, almost as if they felt they could coast and only occasionally go through the gears.
Rashford, set free by Ander Herrera, had a chance on the stroke of half-time when his low shot from the edge of the area was saved by Schmeichel, but that was the first time that United had seriously threatened since early on.
Leicester continued to press for an equaliser after the interval and Jamie Vardy came close to providing it with an acrobatic effort from 12 yards. Maddison's free kick struck the wall, looped up and dropped invitingly for the striker, who swivelled before hitting a powerful shot that de Gea gathered at the second attempt.
That turned out to be Maddison's last act, with Puel's decision to withdraw Leicester's most creative player with just under half an hour remaining an unpopular one with the home supporters.
Rachid Ghezzal came on for Maddison and Demarai Gray moved into the No. 10 role. Curiously, though, Gray lasted only 12 minutes before he was substituted.
Ghezzal did force de Gea into a spectacular save with a 30-yard free kick that the Spaniard clawed away from his top corner.
Set pieces continued to offer Leicester's best hope of a goal. Another Ghezzal free kick, this time crossed into the area from out wide, was headed back across goal by Maguire only for Evans to completely miss his kick.
Then came late chances for Vardy and Maguire, after Schmeichel had denied substitutes Romelu Lukaku and Anthony Martial.
Both could have given the visitors some breathing space by adding a second but, in the end, it mattered little, as United defended resolutely to hold on for a victory that continues their charge for a Champions League berth.

Football: Fandi brothers Irfan and Ikhsan score again for BG Pathum and Raufoss respectively

SINGAPORE - The Fandi brothers are proving their fine vein of form is no fluke as both scored midweek for their respective clubs again.
In Raufoss, Norway, Ikhsan Fandi scored his second league goal for Raufoss IL in a 5-2 home defeat by Sandnes Ulf on Thursday (May 16) night.
After coming on as a 55th-minute replacement for Anton Henningsson, Ikhsan scored via a towering header off Mikkel Maigaard's corner in the 89th minute to reduce the arrears to 4-2, but this time there was to be no late comeback.
Just four nights ago on Sunday, Ikhsan had grabbed his first competitive goal for the second-tier Norwegian club in dramatic fashion when he scored a late bicycle-kick winner - coincidentally also in the 89th minute - in the 3-2 away victory at Skeid.
The 20-year-old striker has played in seven league games this season, all as a substitute, and his two goals have come from just 127 minutes of league action.
Despite the defeat, Raufoss are sixth in the 16-team league, and are still within the third-to-sixth playoff places, with the top two guaranteed automatic promotion to the top division.
Ikhsan told The Straits Times: "Yes I'm happy to score again, but we are disappointed not to get any points from this game.

"Scoring in back-to-back games shows I can do well at this level, and I'm just going to keep working hard and try to score as many goals as I can. If I can get more than 10 this season, it will be a very good tally."
Meanwhile in Thailand, Ikhsan's older brother Irfan Fandi grabbed his fourth goal in 13 games across all competitions in BG Pathum United's 3-0 win over Chiangmai in the second round of the League Cup on Wednesday.
The 21-year-old defender scored in the 75th minute and helped his second-tier Thai team to a clean sheet - his seventh of the season - in the victory over their top-division opponents as they progressed to the last 16.
Irfan had also scored in the 4-1 extra time win over Army United in the previous round in April.
With 31 points from 12 games, BG Pathum are top of Thai League 2 and on course for a swift return to the top tier.

Crucial to beat Watford to stop losing streak: Moura

Crucial to beat Watford to stop losing streak: Moura
LONDON • Tottenham forward Lucas Moura has urged his team to get back to winning ways, after Spurs crashed out of two domestic Cup competitions in the past week.
After losing in the League Cup semi-finals at Chelsea via a penalty shoot-out, Spurs also suffered a shock defeat by Crystal Palace in the fourth round of the FA Cup.
This means that they are left with two trophies to fight for this season - the Premier League, where they are third and nine points behind leaders Liverpool (60 points), and the Champions League, where they face Borussia Dortmund in the last 16 next month.
Spurs have not won a title since their League Cup win in 2008 and Moura said that it is crucial that the team turn their fortunes around, starting with a home league game against Watford today.
"The most important thing now is to return to a win," the Brazilian said on the club website on Monday, a day after manager Mauricio Pochettino suggested that finishing in the top four in the league should be their priority.
"It is a difficult moment. But we need to stay together, stay strong because we know that we have talent. We need to keep our heads up.
"We have a lot of experience, great players and we will be good for the rest of the season."
Wounded by fatigue and injuries to key attacking players like Harry Kane and Dele Alli, Spurs will at least have Moura to provide some firepower up front.
The 26-year-old returned to the starting line-up against Palace on Sunday after a knee problem.
Forward Son Heung-min is also back earlier than expected after South Korea's Asian Cup quarter-final exit to Qatar, although he may not be ready to feature today after missing three games.
"He's so tired, he played three games. Very tough games," Pochettino said. "We hope he'll be available and ready on Wednesday to help the team."

City will not succumb to pressure: Sterling

City will not succumb to pressure: Sterling

LONDON • Raheem Sterling has admitted the "pressure got to him" and his teammates during Liverpool's failed English Premier League title tilt in the 2013-14 season, but there was no chance of a repeat at Manchester City as they have "the belief".
The former Reds forward was part of a team that topped the table with three games to go five years ago, but slipped up to enable City to win the league by two points.
Recalling his time at Anfield, Sterling told Sky Sports: "When I was there (at Liverpool), I did feel a lot more pressure than when I'm here, with match days and the fans.
"We were in control and we had the opportunity to see it through, but we didn't do that.
"Here, we're completely focused on each game and trying to win each game as it comes.
"It's a completely different scenario from last year... we were a bit more comfortable towards this point of the season."

ABOUT-TURN
This year, it's a complete turnaround and we're the ones who are chasing. It's really close at the moment but I have full belief in the squad.
RAHEEM STERLING, on City playing second fiddle to the Reds compared to last year, when they had a massive lead over their challengers.

Liverpool find themselves in a similar situation to five years ago this term, leading City by one point with 10 league games left.
However, Sterling has no doubts they will eventually reel in Jurgen Klopp's side.
He added: "They've been playing some good football at times but we're confident in ourselves.
"This year, it's a complete turnaround and we're the ones who are chasing. It's really close at the moment but I have full belief in the squad."
City can provisionally move top if they avoid defeat at Bournemouth today, with the Merseyside derby taking place tomorrow.
However, Pep Guardiola knows that anything other than a victory would be a massive blow to their hopes of back-to-back league titles for the first time in their history.
The Spaniard has concerns over fatigue affecting his squad, who remain in the hunt for an unprecedented quadruple. And, with Fernandinho and Aymeric Laporte missing for the next few weeks, he will have to tinker with his line-up at Dean Court.
The City boss said: "Hypothetically, we have 20 games left in the season - 10 Premier League games and if we get to the Cup finals - and if you think we are only going to play with Bernardo (Silva) and Raheem, that's not going to happen.
"They (the squad players) know what they have to do, train hard, compete hard, they are going to play minutes.
"Everybody has to make their contribution then, (and) when I see their performance, I'm going to take decisions."
