Football: Vertonghen shines as Tottenham beat Dortmund 3-0
LONDON (REUTERS) - Defender Jan Vertonghen scored once and set up another goal for Son Heung-min as Tottenham Hotspur beat Borussia Dortmund 3-0 at Wembley Stadium on Wednesday (Feb 13) to give them the clear edge following the first leg of their last 16 Champions League tie.
The Belgian notched his first goal in the Champions League with a well-timed volley in the 83rd minute after he had set up forward Son for a 47th minute lead. Substitute Fernando Llorente grabbed their third in the 86th.
That was Son's ninth goal against Dortmund in 11 matches, with the South Korean, who played in the Bundesliga from 2010-15, having also scored twice in the competition's group stage last season.
The Bundesliga leaders, who were eliminated from the German Cup last week, were nowhere to be seen in the second half, with speedy teenager Jadon Sancho given no space to operate after the break. The return leg is on March 5.
Before Wednesday, Tottenham, playing without injured captain Harry Kane and Dele Alli, had never won a home match in the knockout stage of the competition and Lucas Moura came close with a fine shot in the seventh minute.
Dortmund, who were themselves missing injured captain Marco Reus and top striker Paco Alcacer, gradually took control and had the better chances in the first half with Christian Pulisic firing onto keeper Hugo Lloris and the Frenchman saving a point-blank header from Dan-Axel Zagadou.
But the hosts changed the course of the game two minutes after the restart, pouncing on a defensive error and with Vertonghen whipping in a cross for Son to tap in.
Dortmund, who had conceded just two goals in the group stage, tried to recover but found no way past the disciplined Tottenham backline.
Vertonghen then timed his run to perfection in the 83rd to kill off the game and Llorente gave them a big advantage for the second leg.

Football: Do teams still need iconic captains now?
LONDON รข€¢ About a decade ago, The Wall Street Journal writer Sam Walker had the idea of trying to identify the most objectively great teams in sporting history, and seeing if he could discern any common traits.
He found they all shared a single characteristic - for every team, the duration of their success coincided with the lifespan of a captain, who could elevate a team to perform beyond the level of their natural ability, from Hungary's Ferenc Puskas to Carles Puyol of Barcelona.
In short, he theorised the one thing the greatest teams have in common is great player leadership.
Walker's findings provide an interesting counterpoint to an inconspicuous but intriguing trend of this Premier League season.
At many teams, the club captain has been an impermanent or peripheral figure.
Gary Cahill has barely played for Chelsea, likewise, Everton's Phil Jagielka, and Southampton's Steven Davis, now on loan to Rangers.
Manchester United's Antonio Valencia and Manchester City's Vincent Kompany have started five and six league games respectively.
Seven clubs (Arsenal, the Toffees, Fulham, City, United, Newcastle and the Saints) have had four or more captains this term.
All of which begs a question: Is the ever-present, totemic captain an endangered species? And does it matter?
The first thing to point out is that there does not appear to be an obvious correlation between consistency of captain and success based on the small sample of this league season.
City do not appear to have suffered for rotating the armband.
In fact, it is easy to disparage the importance attached to captaincy as old-fashioned - a peculiarly English hang-up.
When pundits - usually from the generations of retired former players - bemoan the lack of leaders in modern football, it feels like they are often harking back to that monolithic figure of English folklore.
The blood-soaked Terry Butcher, or Captain Marvel Bryan Robson, or John Terry or Tony Adams shouting and pointing fingers.
But Nigel Winterburn, who played under Adams at Arsenal, says that the presence of an old-school skipper in the ranks was not something he or his teammates considered a particularly important factor in their success.
"It didn't give us anything extra," the former England defender says.
"I never really worried who was captain, it didn't interest me."
When Winterburn moved to West Ham, the captaincy was less consistent unlike at Highbury, yet he "didn't personally notice the difference".
Is the lionisation of a single captain out of step with the reality of modern football then, a prehistoric obsession in an era of advanced analytics and player rotation?
As Michael Cox pointed out in an article for ESPN on Arsenal's perceived lack of leaders in 2016, every generation thinks it had better leaders.
As early as 1938, then Gunners boss Herbert Chapman was lamenting: "Football today lacks the personalities of 20 or 30 years ago."
A lack of leadership is often a retrofitted criticism applied to underperforming teams, while teams that succeed, despite lacking archetypal leaders, escape censure.
However, it would be wrong to say the idea of captaincy is something that is incompatible with the analytical side of modern football.
It is possible that the cult of the captain has seemingly declined in parallel with the rise of the cult of the coach.
The advent of meticulous micromanagers such as City's Pep Guardiola and Liverpool's Jurgen Klopp, whose coaching depends in large part on intensively rehearsing movements and systems, ensures their teams are never unsure of what to do in any phase of the game.
It seems there has also been a change in the type of player considered for the captaincy.
In the past, that office was usually the preserve of vocal, charismatic, defensive players.
But a new breed of captain has begun to emerge. This season, Arsenal's Mesut Ozil, David Silva at City and Fulham's Tom Cairney have worn the armband in the league.
These are all attacking players, most of the individualistic variety, none especially loud.
But Winterburn, who was captained by Joe Cole in his final season at West Ham, believes they can do the job.
"You don't always need vocal captains," he says. "You can lead by example as a creative player. If the likes of (Chelsea's Eden) Hazard or Silva are picked as captains, for me, that's a sign that those guys should be able to inspire the team."
While Winterburn still prefers the single-captain model, he adds, "There should be 11 captains out there."
It seems that is the way we are heading but by rotating the captaincy, are you multiplying leadership or spreading it more thinly?
Therein lies the paradox - with 59 players and counting having skippered a league team this season, is captaincy in decline? Or is it in fashion?

Blues manager Maurizio Sarri hails Higuain-Hazard partnership
Blues manager Maurizio Sarri hails Higuain-Hazard partnership
LONDON รข€¢ Maurizio Sarri has tried everything this season in a bid to solve Chelsea's scoring woes from persisting with Olivier Giroud and Alvaro Morata despite their slump in form to playing Eden Hazard as a "false nine".
But, until last month's arrival of Gonzalo Higuain, on loan from Juventus until the end of the season, the Blues' attack has not quite lived up to the fans' expectations of "Sarri-ball".
While the goals have dried up, they have also been conceding at the other end, with Sarri under pressure following their heaviest Premier League defeat for 23 years in a shock 4-0 loss at Bournemouth last Wednesday.
Having suffered two successive losses in the league and sack rumours swirling, the Italian was indebted to Higuain, who opened his Blues account with a brace, and a double from Hazard as the pair inspired the home team to a 5-0 trouncing of rock-bottom Huddersfield on Saturday.
Although the Argentina striker failed to reproduce his best form while on loan at AC Milan earlier this season - scoring only eight goals in 20 appearances - he came to Stamford Bridge at his manager's behest after their successful spell together at Napoli.
And the 31-year-old, on his home league debut, demonstrated why Sarri was desperate for his signature as his presence up front enabled Hazard to return to his preferred position on the flanks, where he is at his most dangerous.
Not only did Chelsea look a far more vibrant team, it was also their biggest win of the season, with David Luiz adding the fifth.
Afterwards, Sarri told reporters he was encouraged by the link-up play between Higuain and Hazard.
He said: " I'm really very happy because apart from the goals, he (Higuain) is really very suitable to play very close to Eden. On the pitch, they are really very suitable to play one close to the other.
"For us, that is very useful. It will be useful for Higuain - he will be able to score goals for us - and also useful for Eden. I know very well that, when he arrived, he wasn't at the top of his physical condition. Now, he is improving."
While it is still early days with the Belgium forward playing only his second game alongside Higuain, there are signs that the budding partnership can flourish.
According to Sky Sports, Hazard found him seven times during the Terriers game - more passes than he has made to Giroud or Morata in any league game this season.
However, with the stinging defeat by the Cherries fresh in his mind, Sarri warned his side that they still needed "to improve the mentality".
He added: "As I said before, we have to arrive at every match with the same level of determination and motivation, and we don't need to lose a match to have the right motivation.
"So, we need to improve. We need to understand that, in the future, we should not have to lose a game to add motivation."

DORTMUND, GERMANY (REUTERS) รข€“ Tottenham Hotspur must forget their commanding 3-0 Champions League last 16 first-leg advantage over Borussia Dortmund and must play to beat the Germans again on Tuesday (March 5), coach Mauricio Pochettino has said.ร
Spurs took their chances to build a big lead at Wembley last month but both sides have since struggled for form, with the Londoners having lost twice and drawn in the Premier League, while Bundesliga leaders Dortmund have drawn, won and lost.ร
Despite their first-leg advantage, Pochettino warned against complacency and said he wanted his team to play for another win, although they have had one day less to prepare than the Germans.ร
รข€ลWe all agree that first of all we need to perform tomorrow. It is going to be tough, we need to forget the first leg, that must be our approach,รข€ he told a news conference on Monday.ร
รข€ลI think we need to play like always, try to win. We cannot think about the first leg. Itรข€™s so important to start the game at a good level and be aggressive. That is key.รข€
Spurs must wait to see if Eric Dier, who has not played since early February due to tonsillitis, and fellow England midfielder Harry Winks, recovering from a hip injury, will be fit to play after the pair travelled with the squad.ร
รข€ลWe need to assess both. They are here because we still need one day more to assess if they can (play),รข€ Pochettino said. รข€ลDier has been out for a while and may be on the bench. Winks we need to see tomorrow.รข€
Pochettino also expressed his dissatisfaction with the fact that Dortmund had an extra 24 hours to rest for the game after their 2-1 defeat at Augbsurg in the Bundesliga on Friday.ร Spurs, who are third in the Premier League, were in action on Saturday when they drew 1-1 at home to Arsenal.ร
รข€ลItรข€™s strange for me that no-one has said anything about that. The first leg was the same. Itรข€™s impossible, how important is the game, that one team has 24 hours more to prepare. Itรข€™s massive,รข€ he said.ร
รข€ลWe need help from the (English) FA, we need help from the Premier League. I donรข€™t know whose fault it is. I donรข€™t know whether it is the FA, the Premier League, the club or the TV (who) wanted the matches to be on those days.รข€ร

Football: Man United open talks with Rashford over new deal, reports say
LONDON (AFP) - Manchester United have opened talks with Marcus Rashford over a new and improved contract following the forward's impressive run of form under caretaker manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, reports said on Tuesday (Feb 5).
The 21-year-old scored his 10th goal of the season in Sunday's 1-0 win at Leicester, becoming the second-youngest player to reach 100 Premier League appearances for United after Ryan Giggs.
Rashford's contract expires next year and while United have the option to extend it until 2021, negotiations are understood to have started over a fresh agreement.
Rashford has started all eight Premier League games since Solskjaer took over from the sacked Jose Mourinho in December, scoring six goals.
The club are also working on a new contract for goalkeeper David de Gea, having last week tied forward Anthony Martial down until at least 2024.
United interim boss Solskjaer said on Friday that Martial and Rashford could create a devastating on-field relationship for years to come.
"They'll play many, many years together, hopefully, so if they get an understanding of each other, because both are very good at coming in off the left," he said.
"If one of them plays centrally, then the other one has to have opposite movements."
Seven wins in eight league games under Solskjaer have lifted United to just two points behind fourth-placed Chelsea in the race for Champions League places.

NICE (REUTERS) - England's Nikita Parris and Ellen White scored first-half goals as the Lionesses defeated neighbours Scotland 2-1 on Sunday (June 9) to make a strong start to their women's World Cup campaign.
Phil Neville's team emerged as early leaders of a difficult Group D after a fine attacking display against the debutants at Stade de Nice, with 2015 World Cup runners-up Japan playing their first game, against Argentina, on Monday.
England went 1-0 ahead in the 14th minute when striker Parris fired her penalty past goalkeeper Lee Alexander after a Video Assistant Referee (VAR) review had confirmed that forward Fran Kirby's cross inside the box had hit defender Nicola Docherty's arm.
They continued to trouble the Scottish defence and doubled their lead through Birmingham City forward White, who collected the ball at the edge of the penalty area and beat Alexander with a curled effort from her left foot in the 40th minute.
Scotland pulled back a goal in the second half as former Manchester City forward Claire Emslie took advantage of a rare defensive error by England skipper Steph Houghton to slot the ball past goalkeeper Karen Bardsley with 11 minutes to go.
The only worry for England on the day was a shoulder injury suffered by experienced defender Millie Bright who had to be substituted shortly after she landed awkwardly following a challenge on Erin Cuthbert.
England meet Argentina in their next match at Le Havre on Friday while Shelley Kerr's Scotland take on world number seven Japan on the same day in Rennes.

Tampines Rovers 0
Albirex Niigata 0
It was tactical cat and mouse in the Singapore Premier League (SPL) yesterday as leaders Tampines Rovers laid siege but had to settle for a 0-0 draw against Albirex Niigata.
Fireworks were expected from this fixture as the Stags, with 11 goals from three games, faced last season's undefeated champions but, in the end, the White Swans' defence held firm before 2,745 fans at Our Tampines Hub.
A disappointed Stags coach Gavin Lee said: "It's two points dropped. We could argue that they (Albirex) had chances), but we should have taken our chances.
"But we will get better with more training and, knowing these boys, they will rebound quickly."
White Swans coach Keiji Shigetomi found some satisfaction in his team's defensive strength, saying: "They (Tampines) can have the ball, but not in our vital areas. We have played them in a pre-season friendly (losing 4-0) and we understand their attacking threats. Our plan was to block all their avenues of attack."
The result keeps Tampines top of the nine-team SPL standings on 10 points from four games, three ahead of Brunei DPMM, who have a game in hand. Albirex are sixth with two points from three games.
The two clubs are known for their attacking football, but it was Albirex, yet to score this season, who had to dig in to repel waves of attacks from the Stags.
Lee applied pressure through his wingers - Jordan Webb and Ryutaro Megumi - and Webb came close in the 19th minute, nicking the ball off defender Shuhei Sasahara but curling wide from an acute angle. In the 35th minute, Megumi volleyed wide from close range and, in stoppage time, striker Khairul Amri missed a good chance which could have won it for the home team.
"Everyone could see that Albirex came with a clear game plan. We predicted that but, unfortunately, we could not get into a rhythm in the first half," Lee said.
"We gave Albirex a few more problems in the second half. It wasn't easy as they were looking to hit us on the break. In the end, it was an even game."
Despite ending Tampines' three-game winning streak, Albirex finished the game with some regrets.
Shigetomi said: "I'm more frustrated with no goals being scored. We have taken a clean sheet against Tampines, but we still need to work hard on our attacking play.
"The players have to work more on their finishing, be more ruthless, more decisive and improve their accuracy."
Meanwhile, the Football Association of Singapore (FAS) announced yesterday sanctions against two National Football League players for cheating during the mandatory 2.4km fitness test.
Shahir Hamzah and Masnashzreen Masturi from Yishun Sentek Mariners allowed "unknown persons" to impersonate them and take the test on their behalf.
Photographic and video evidence were collected to prove their guilt and both players were banned from being registered in any FAS organised or sanctioned competitions until the end of the 2021 season.

(REUTERS) - Everton avoided a third consecutive Premier League home defeat as Kurt Zouma's header and a late goal by Dominic Calvert-Lewin earned them a flattering 2-0 victory against Bournemouth at a rainy Goodison Park on Sunday (Jan 13).
There were grumblings of discontent from the home fans as Everton were outplayed before the break but Marco Silvaรข€™s side improved after the interval to move back into the top half of the table.ร Bournemouth have now lost six successive away league games.ร
รข€ลI think the result is really harsh on us today, we competed in a really tough game and we had some chances we didnรข€™t take but the scoreline doesnรข€™t reflect the performance,รข€ Bournemouth manager Eddie Howe said.ร
รข€ลThe fighting spirit and determination was on show, we pressed well and we nullified their threats for large spells.รข€
It was hard to disagree with Howeรข€™s assessment, especially before the interval when his eye-catching side dominated.ร
Young Welsh striker David Brooks was a thorn in the Everton defence and he struck a shot against the base of the post in the 14th minute after being played in by Junior Stanislas, who himself nearly embarrassed England keeper Jordan Pickford with a free kick.ร
Bournemouth also had two penalty shouts ignored before Everton gradually roused themselves, with defender Michael Keane heading against the crossbar shortly before half-time.ร Everton began to click after the break and Richarlisonรข€™s shot was cleared off the line by Nathan Ake.ร
The hosts took the lead with only their second effort on target in the 61st minute.ร Lucas Digne did well to keep a ball in play and his hoisted cross was headed home powerfully by defender Zouma for his first Everton goal since joining on loan from Chelsea.ร
Evertonรข€™s second in stoppage-time, struck home excellently by Calvert-Lewin after great work by Ademola Lookman, was harsh on Bournemouth who will wonder how they went home unrewarded.ร
Everton boss Silva was especially impressed by the performance of 21-year-old midfielder Lookman who is being linked with a move away from Goodison Park.ร
รข€ลIt was a fantastic performance and we know he is at that level, but he will improve more and more,รข€ Silva said.ร รข€ลEven if 2-0 is a tough result to take for them, we deserved the points and our players showed big personality and character as a team.รข€
Bournemouth, who had 16 goal attempts, remained in 12th spot with 27 points from 22 games, nine points above the bottom three. Everton moved into 10th spot on 30 points.ร

Geylang International v Brunei DPMM
Our Tampines Hub, 8.30pm
Brunei DPMM are enjoying their view from the summit a third into the Singapore Premier League season, but coach Adrian Pennock does not believe his side will end the campaign unbeaten.
With seven wins and two draws, they are the only unbeaten team. They lead champions Albirex Niigata (17 points) by six points.
DPMM will look to extend their excellent run against third-from-bottom Geylang International at Our Tampines Hub tonight.
However, when asked if his side could emulate Albirex's feat last year, when the Japanese team did not lose a league game, Pennock said: "It's not impossible, but we've played every team now, and it'll be very, very difficult to do.
"Every game we played, maybe except (a 7-1 win over) Balestier where they had injuries to key players, hasn't been a walkover. So it'll be a very tall order.
"We're just enjoying the moment, but we know we've got to lose sometime, and maybe soon."
The Englishman, who was formerly assistant to Tony Pulis at Premier League side Stoke City, added: "Obviously, it's great to be sitting nicely at the top of the tree, but we're there to be shot at."
Pennock, 48, pointed to the fitness work done in pre-season last December, daily runs on the hills and in the jungles of Bandar Seri Begawan, as being key to the team's current success.
His foreign imports have also shone. Former Belarus international striker Andrei Varankou is the league's leading scorer with 12 goals, while Australian midfielder Blake Ricciuto has also impressed, scoring four goals in the last five games.
"The important thing for us has been hard work," said Pennock.
"We have players who can score goals and win games on their own, but everybody works hard for each other.
"We can still improve. We're not the finished article for sure."
The odds are stacked against Geylang, whose coach Noor Ali faces a major selection headache.
Barry Maguire, Syahiran Miswan, Noor Ariff and Darren Teh are suspended, while former Singapore internationals Firdaus Kasman (calf) and Christopher van Huizen (back) are struggling with injuries. Key attacker Shawal Anuar is not match fit after recovering from a serious knee injury.
Noor Ali named six Under-23 players in his starting XI in last Saturday's 2-0 defeat by Albirex and may have to field even more youngsters against DPMM.
But he said: "This is an opportunity for my young boys to show if they are able to put in consistent performances. And they are willing to play hard and compete."
Referring to this week's Champions League comebacks by Liverpool and Tottenham, he quipped: "There have been two big upsets in football already this week. Maybe our game could be the third?"

LONDON รข€¢ Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has insisted he is still the right manager to deliver success at Manchester United despite last Sunday's shambolic 4-0 English Premier League defeat at Everton.
United produced their worst display under Solskjaer, who has overseen 25 matches in all competitions, initially as interim manager and then the permanent boss.
The Norwegian subsequently apologised to fans for his players' poor performance.
The loss was a huge blow to United's top-four hopes and left the team in sixth place on 64 points, two behind Arsenal who travel to Wolves today.
United will host rivals Manchester City at the same time and, when asked at a pre-match conference yesterday if he is the best person for United, Solskjaer said: "I would like to say yes, but it's not down to me to say that.
"I'm confident in my team and myself to take this challenge on. It's a big challenge and, when I came in here, I said I'm going to enjoy every single second.
"I don't like losing, but it's a challenge when you go through bad results. This is the way we're gonna do it and plan ahead."
Midfielder Paul Pogba had told Sky Sports that the way United played at Goodison Park was "disrespectful" to themselves, the club and the fans and that the team are looking to give everything on the pitch today.
However, City are on a 10-match winning streak in the league and Solskjaer has warned his men to expect an aggressive battle.
"We got to be ready for their pressing so we've got to defend well, got to be ready for aggression, they will snap at your heels and kick you," the 46-year-old said.
"There will be fouls, absolutely no doubt about it and, when you watch those games, they commit so many players forward.
"They won't allow us easy counter-attacking.
"This is the best game we could ask for with players hurt, as they definitely were.
"We had a meeting after the (Everton) game and all the players were definitely disappointed and really hurt by that performance.
"The City game is the perfect one, there's no hiding place on the pitch and the fans will back you if you give that effort."

Second-placed City, on 86 points, will reclaim top spot from leaders Liverpool (88) with a win today.
James Milner, who has played for three of United's fiercest rivals - Leeds, City and now Liverpool - in the course of a 17-year career, has said he will become a United fan for the first time today.
The 33-year-old explained that he would be delighted if United did Liverpool a favour by winning.
"First time in my life," he said when asked about his support for United this week.
"But I won't be watching. It's a bit of a waste of energy, willing the ball in the other goal."
Liverpool have never won the Premier League title and were last crowned champions of England when they lifted the old First Division trophy back in 1990.
Defender Virgil van Dijk, in his second season with Liverpool, also believes that United will put in a big performance and at the same time aid Liverpool's ambitions.
"United need to do themselves a favour. Everton is not easy to beat at home, but 4-0 is a big loss," the Dutchman said.
"We have no influence on that (the Manchester derby), but United are still playing for Champions League football and they need to get a (good) result."

Asian Cup 2019: Vietnam and China through to quarter-finals
DUBAI รข€¢ Jordan had not conceded a single goal en route to the round of 16 at the Asian Cup, but Vietnam showed they were far from overawed by their opponents' greater pedigree to triumph 4-2 on penalties after the match finished 1-1 following extra time yesterday.
The Middle Eastern side became the first team to book their place in the knockout stage, beating reigning champions Australia and Syria to win Group B, while the Vietnamese had only squeaked through by virtue of having a superior disciplinary record to Lebanon.
Yet there were no signs of any inferiority complex from Park Hang-seo's Vietnam side as they matched Jordan for effort, with little to separate the teams in a tightly contested match at the Al Maktoum Stadium.
Vital Borkelmans' men, however, opened the scoring in the 39th minute. Their goal was disputable though, with Vietnam having some grounds for grievance.
They were penalised for a high boot, with Jordan being awarded an indirect free kick inside the box. It also looked like Yousef Al-Rawashdeh had touched the ball to tee-up Baha Abdel-Rahman, who lashed it into the roof of the net.
But the AFF Suzuki Cup champions did not let their heads drop.
Going behind galvanised Vietnam and they responded by peppering Amer Shafi's goal, with Do Hung Dung coming closest to breaching the Jordan defence.
And they were rewarded for their tenacity with Nguyen Cong Phuong's volleyed equaliser six minutes after the break.
Nguyen Trong Hoang sent an inviting cross into the area and Phuong got between their backline to flick the ball into the net.
But, while both teams went in search of the winner, neither could find the breakthrough.
In the shoot-out, Jordan fluffed their lines with Baha Faisal hitting the bar, while Dang Van Lam proved to be Vietnam's hero, saving Ahmed Samir's effort.
Although Amer Shafi palmed away Tran Minh Vuong's attempt, substitute Bui Tien Dung then converted his penalty, sending his side through to a meeting with powerhouses Japan or Saudi Arabia, who play each other today, on Thursday.
In the later match, China beat Thailand 2-1. Supachai Jaided opened the scoring for the Thais in the 31st minute, but goals from Xiao Zhi and Gao Lin (penalty) in the second half saw the Chinese through to the quarter-finals.

A queen in the making
A queen in the making
Along a corridor near the main office at Queensway Secondary School hangs a photograph of Putri Nur Syaliza. It leads to the school field, the arena of choice for the 15-year-old footballer.
But she does not quite like it.
"I'm shy lah," she said, turning her gaze to the ground. "The school puts up pictures of students who have got good achievements... My friends were all shocked when they saw it, and they teased me for having my face on that wall."
To say that Putri has good achievements would be a massive understatement. She scored 19 goals in five games in the Schools National girls' B Division championship - including the third in the 5-2 win over Hong Kah in April's final - to finish as champion and top scorer.
She had a sensational year in the C Division, where she plundered 42 goals in just six games to become the top scorer of the competition and lead her school to the title.
She was also named the Football Association of Singapore (FAS) Young Player of the Year after her debut season with champions Warriors FC in the five-team FAS Women's Premier League last year.
She has got a few more feathers in her cap, feathers that will likely ensure her photo stays on that school wall for some time to come.
Even before she lined up in the B Division final for Queensway, Putri was called up to the national women's team, trained twice and, 12 days before her 15th birthday, made her international debut.
That March 5 match against the Maldives saw her make history on two counts for either gender.
She became the youngest Singapore football international, as a 33rd-minute substitute, and the youngest scorer with the opener in the 2-0 win.
The secret to her excellence is simple. "I really, really love football, and I just want to play. I started playing when I was four, with my brother," she said.
In a football-mad family of seven, Putri, the youngest and only daughter, had a lot of help. One brother is Singapore Under-23 international Syahrul Sazali, who plies his trade with the Young Lions in the Singapore Premier League.
"I remember following him to play football in our neighbourhood in Choa Chu Kang, and playing 'monkey' with our neighbours," she said. "I was always in the middle, having to try and win the ball, but even now my defending is really bad," she quipped, before breaking out in laughter.
ร
"Every one of us in the family is involved in football, even my mother who is managing an amateur club called Putra FC," said Putri. "And she's very supportive, taking me to training and matches too."
The support provided by Queensway is another key reason Putri has been able to focus on football. While her school team train thrice a week, she attends only one of those sessions. Instead, she trains three times with the national team, and twice with Warriors FC.
She said: "I really appreciate my school because I have friends who struggle to balance school football with national team (commitments). This way it's not tiring for me, so when I can, I go for both national team and school sessions."
Queensway's commitment to her sporting pursuits has gone even further. She was with the Under-16 team in Indonesia for May's AFF U-16 Girls' Championship and the school let her miss the mid-year exams.
"I'm really happy the school has been so supportive," she said.
Putri hopes to don national colours for next year's SEA Games, and has an eye on playing abroad, professionally but, for now, the aim is to improve.
"I just want to play football," she said. "And get better at defending - I'm really bad at it."

ALL FOR ONE
Every one of us in the family is involved in football, even my mother who is managing an amateur club called Putra FC. And she's very supportive, taking me to training and matches too.
PUTRI NUR SYALIZA, 15-year starlet, on her football-crazy family.

Relatives raise funds to continue search for missing footballer Emiliano Sala
LONDON รข€¢ Relatives of missing Premier League player Emiliano Sala on Saturday began a privately funded search for his plane, which disappeared over the English Channel, after local coast guard called off their own rescue mission.
The news was announced by an online fundraising campaign for the operation, and confirmed to Agence France-Presse by Maria Jose Sottini, a friend of the Argentinian striker's family.
"The appeal launched late Friday afternoon enabled Emiliano Sala's relatives, via a specialised organisation, to resume research in the Channel early this Saturday morning," said a statement on the GoFundMe website.
"Two boats are leading the operations."
Around 4,000 people have so far contributed to the campaign, which was organised by Sala's agency, Sport Cover, raising almost รข‚¬321,343 (S$496,167).
The target of รข‚¬300,000 was reached within a day.
According to the BBC, fellow footballers including Ilkay Gundogan from Manchester City, Paris Saint-Germain's Adrien Rabiot and Corentin Tolisso of Bayern Munich have donated to the fund, as did Sala's former manager at Nantes, Vahid Halilhodzic.
A light aircraft transporting Sala, who signed for Cardiff City two Saturdays ago, vanished from the radar around 20km north of the Channel island of Guernsey last Monday night.
The 28-year-old, who moved from French Ligue 1 club Nantes for a club-record fee of ร£15 million (S$26.7 million), had been flying to the Welsh capital for his first training session after saying goodbye to his former teammates.
Rescue workers formally called off the search for the missing plane on Thursday.
As investigators probe what happened, it emerged that while his football agent Willie McKay had arranged for the ill-fated flight, he did not choose the Piper Malibu plane or its pilot, who has since been named as David Ibbotson.
"We had no involvement in selecting a plane or a pilot and wish to make clear we do not own the plane that Emiliano flew on," the Briton said in a statement.

Football: Despite squad overhaul, Albirex Niigata's target for new season is still to 'win all the titles'
Football: Despite squad overhaul, Albirex Niigata's target for new season is still to 'win all the titles'
SINGAPORE - Among the 15 trophies on offer in local professional football since 2015, Albirex Niigata have won 13 of them, completing three straight clean sweeps since 2016 in an era of dominance never seen here.
But, before Saturday's (Feb 22) Community Shield curtain raiser, has the first signs of weakness appeared for the team that clinched the Singapore Premier League (SPL) title last year without losing a game?
Last week, Albirex were thumped 4-0 by Tampines Rovers in a pre-season friendly.
The defeat was notable as the White Swans had played a strong XI, barring new 2.05m forward Makito Hatanaka.
The club's new head coach Keiji Shigetomi said: "Tampines are a very strong team with many national players. They will be title contenders this year.
"Even though we lost 4-0, it was a very good lesson for us. I learnt more about my team and we will be ready for the Community Shield."
Albirex will meet SPL runners-up Home United at the Jalan Besar Stadium (6pm).
ร
Shigetomi's men had won their other sparring matches (2-0 against Hougang United and 6-0 against the Singapore Under-18s), but face a tough task rebuilding after new league rules dictate that the Japanese club have to sign a minimum of four local players, and have to start with at least two every game.
Shigetomi said: "Our target is to win all the titles, but the team are new and we have to work very hard. Last season, we didn't lose any match, but we have only four members of that squad who are still with us.
"And we have (six) Singaporean players with us, it will be a more difficult challenge for us. But we will take one game at a time and not look too far."
From last year's all-conquering side, the White Swans have kept only midfielder Hiroyoshi Kamata and the defensive trio of Shuhei Sasahara, Kaishu Yamazaki and Kodai Sumikawa while Singaporeans Hyrulnizam Juma'at, Gerald Ang, Noor Akid, Firas Irwan, Zamani Zamri and Martens Daniel will don the orange jersey this season.
Shigetomi said: "The change in regulations affected our team a lot. The overall age of the squad has also been reduced.
"A lot of the players may not have the necessary experience yet. It will be a challenge."
As Albirex try to maintain their winning formula in the SPL, new Home coach Saswadimata Dasuki is plotting to end the Protectors' 16-year title drought.
He said: "Our target is to win the (league) title, but we know that Tampines and Albirex are very strong and Hougang (United) have beefed up their squad.
"It's not going to be easy, but the target is there. We finished second last year and we want to take one step further this year."
Home had also conducted an efficient recruitment drive, snapping up former Albirex forward and SPL Young Player of the Year Adam Swandi.
The 23-year-old striker will cast emotions aside when he faces his former team on Saturday.
Adam said: "It's a very difficult position for me because Albirex really groomed me into a better player and person.
"I want to thank them for the opportunity, but football is football, you go to different teams in different seasons.
"I now have to fight for the crest on my chest and I want to give 100 per cent to get the Community Shield."

LIVERPOOL, England (REUTERS) - Liverpool forward Roberto Firmino's ankle injury is not as serious as initially estimated, but manager Juergen Klopp said he may not risk the Brazilian even if he is passed fit for Wednesday's (Feb 27) Premier League game against Watford.
Firmino sustained an ankle injury in Liverpool's goalless draw at Manchester United on Sunday. Klopp is keen to manage his player's injury ahead of the Merseyside derby with Everton at the weekend.
"If Bobby goes down and leaves the pitch it is always a bad sign because he is a pretty hard boy," Klopp told reporters.
"Because we play tomorrow, it will be very close for that, but he has a big chance for the derby.
"Writing Bobby off is a big mistake because he recovers pretty quick... I would say 'Yes (there is a chance for Watford)', but I don't know if I would use that chance."
Klopp said leaders Liverpool, who have drawn three out of their last four games to allow champions Manchester City back into the title race, must focus on Watford and not get distracted by the clash with Everton on Sunday.
"I don't think at any time in the history of football a manager thinks about a Sunday game when they're playing on Wednesday. Watford is a difficult one, they are on a good run and they have different styles of play," the German added.
"Against the top six they don't have a lot of possession but they are a good counter-attacking threat, good from set pieces and second balls.
"It's different when they play other teams, they are much more proactive. We need to be ready for both."
Liverpool have 66 points from 27 games, one point more than second-placed City.
