Football: Qatar's beIN to 'launch' legal action against AFC

DOHA (AFP) - Qatari broadcaster beIN Sports on Tuesday (March 12) threatened legal action against the Asian Football Confederation, alleging the governing body had "surrendered" to Saudi Arabia in a new row over Gulf broadcasting rights.
Earlier on Tuesday, the AFC announced it would live-stream free matches featuring Saudi clubs in the region's premier club competition, the Champions League.
BeIN hold the rights to air competition matches.
The latest flashpoint comes amid a long-running row between the two countries over sports broadcasting, which has seen Qatar accuse Saudi of facilitating "industrial-scale" piracy of its programmes through a channel called "beoutQ", a claim Riyadh denies.
It also comes amid an ongoing bitter diplomatic Gulf crisis which has seen Qatar boycotted for the past 21 months by neighbouring former allies including Saudi Arabia.
"In response to the extraordinary announcement by the AFC... beIN is set to launch a major international legal dispute against the Confederation for material breach of its multi-million dollar broadcast agreement." beIN added the move was "clearly political".
The Doha-based sports broadcasting giant has held a contract with the AFC since 2013 to cover Champions League games as well as the Asian Cup tournament.
BeIN is thought to spend around US$38 million (S$51.5 million) a year on the contract, which is up for renewal in 2020.
In a statement, the AFC said it had made the move to "protect the rights of its commercial and broadcast partners".
Matches will be live-streamed on geo-blocked digital channels including Facebook Live, added the AFC.
A statement from the Saudi Press Agency said the AFC, in a letter to the Saudi Arabian Football Federation, was cancelling "the monopoly of beIN sports channels".
The news agency said the decision was based on "serious legal and systematic violations" committed by beIN.
This will not be the first legal action threatened by beIN.
Last October it launched a US$1-billion compensation claim against Saudi broadcasters over the issue of piracy.
The latest row comes just weeks before the AFC elects its new president.
One of the three candidates is Qatar's Saoud al-Mohannadi.

Football: Modric criticises Ballon d'Or gala snub by Messi, Ronaldo

MADRID (REUTERS) - Ballon d'Or winner Luka Modric has criticised Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi for choosing not to attend this month's ceremony where he was given the award, saying their decision was unfair to fellow players and voters.
Croatian captain Modric, who broke Messi and Ronaldo's decade-long stranglehold on the prestigious prize last month, said in a newspaper interview on Saturday (Dec 15) the pair's absence from the gala in Paris on Dec 3 did not make sense.
"I cannot speak about why someone didn't turn up at an award ceremony, it's their choice. It doesn't make sense, does it? It seems these votes and awards are only significant when they win," the Real Madrid midfielder told Croatian newspaper Sportske Novosti.
"It's unfair to fellow players and voters who have nominated them in the past 10 years, as well as to football and the fans. However, people will act the way they think they should."
Juventus forward Ronaldo came second in the 2018 Ballon d'Or vote behind his old Real team mate Modric, while Messi was fifth, a ranking met with some consternation at both the Argentine's club Barcelona and in the Catalan media.
Modric, who lifted a third successive Champions League title with Real last season and led Croatia to a first-ever World Cup final, said Ronaldo and Messi were still the best two players around but added that it did not mean they should always be named best player each season.
"In my opinion, things are very simple: Ronaldo and Messi are phenomenons who have been dominant in the past 10 years or so. They've been in a league of their own," Modric said.

"But we are talking about a season's accomplishments here and I guess it means something that votes by national team coaches, managers, football legends, journalists and fellow players have produced the same results."
The Croatian also offered the sarcastic suggestion: "If the debate is going to be about how good a particular player is, the only course of action is to award all trophies to Messi and Ronaldo until they retire and scrap the voting."

Stronger action to fight racism

Stronger action to fight racism

PODGORICA • European football's governing body Uefa yesterday charged Montenegro over racist behaviour by their fans towards England players during their Euro 2020 qualifier.
Gareth Southgate's men were irrepressible as they ran out 5-1 winners. However, the rout was soured by the prolonged racist abuse, leading to calls for stadium bans.
Defender Danny Rose was subjected to monkey chants while forward Raheem Sterling, who called for Montenegro supporters to be banned from matches, was also targeted on Monday night.
Calling the abuse as "not acceptable", England manager Southgate told TV channel ITV Sport: "I definitely heard abuse of Danny Rose when he got booked at the end of the game. There's no doubt in my mind that happened."
And Uefa has taken action by starting disciplinary proceedings, with the case set to be heard on May 16. Montenegro could face a partial or full stadium closure for their next qualifying match.
But Southgate, whose side ran riot on the night through Michael Keane, Ross Barkley's brace and a penalty from Harry Kane before Sterling added gloss to the scoreline, felt "sanctions are worthless if there is nothing alongside that to help educate people".
The 48-year-old added: "There's an innocence about young people that is only influenced by older people. We have to make sure the education is right for everybody, in our country, the same."
He also said he had yet to talk to Sterling, who responded to the taunts by cupping his hands to his ears towards a section of Montenegro fans when he scored late on.
The Manchester City player told Sky Sports after the Group A game: "I didn't hear (the chants) personally, but Danny made it clear and (made me) aware that's what they were doing, so I just wanted to show them they were going to need more than that to upset and stop us.
"It's a shame to see this keep going on. It's now time for the people in charge to put a stamp on it. You can fine someone, but what's that going to do? You've got to punish the fans who can't come to the games.

A SERIOUS PROBLEM
You can fine someone, but what's that going to do? You've got to make it a bit harder. You've got to punish the whole fans who can't come to the games... because if their team can't play with fans, it's going to be difficult for them.
RAHEEM STERLING, who was targeted by Montenegro fans, urging stronger measures against racist abuse.

"You've got to do something that will really make them think twice because if their team can't play with fans, it's going to be difficult for them."
He later took to social media to revel in the resounding victory, tweeting: "Best way to silence the haters... (and yeah I mean racists)."
Chelsea forward Callum Hudson-Odoi, who became the second-youngest England player to start a competitive game at the Podgorica City Stadium, also felt the provocative goading was "not right".
Admitting it had marred his career milestone, the 18-year-old told beIN Sports: "You are trying to enjoy the moment but, when you are hearing stuff like that from the fans, it's unacceptable.
"I don't think discrimination should be anywhere - we are equal. Me and Rosey heard it, the 'Oooh, Oooh' monkey stuff.
"Hopefully, Uefa will deal with it."
The unsavoury scenes drew swift condemnation from other parties, with football's anti-discrimination group Kick it Out tweeting: "Disgraceful to hear racist chants directed at black England players this evening.
"As we've argued countless times, it's time for Uefa to take strong, decisive action - fines won't do. Extended stadium bans or tournament expulsion are what's needed."
Pundit Ian Wright agreed, claiming that a slap on the wrist would be little deterrence. The former Arsenal striker told ITV: "They (Montenegro) will be fined a pittance, and we'll get the same thing again here the next time or somewhere else. It's not going to stop them."

Football: Manchester United move into Premier League's top four with 3-0 win at Fulham

LONDON (REUTERS) - Manchester United rolled to their 10th win in 11 games under caretaker boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer with a 3-0 win at Fulham on Saturday (Feb 9), climbing into the top four in the Premier League for the first time since the opening weekend.
Paul Pogba fired United ahead from an impossibly tight angle in the 14th minute, springing in behind the defence and onto a pass from Anthony Martial on the left, turning and shooting first time between keeper Sergio Rico and the near post.
Martial doubled the lead nine minutes later in style, collecting the ball on the halfway line, jinking past Denis Odoi and racing all the way into the area before stroking his shot beyond the reach of Rico.
Fulham had begun the game brightly, creating four shots in the first five minutes, but their chances petered out and they seemed to lose confidence as United controlled the ball for long periods.
Their best chance was in the opening minute when Andre Schurrle broke forward and floated the ball across the area and down into the path of Luciano Vietto. The Argentine, however, sent his shot just wide of the far post.
United’s Belgian striker Romelu Lukaku had an anonymous first half, outshone by his two French team mates. But he helped create the penalty that led to the third goal when he charged forward to pass to Juan Mata, who was bundled over inside the area by Fulham’s Maxime Le Marchand.
Pogba converted from the spot to put the game beyond Fulham’s reach, and was then substituted, most likely to keep him fit ahead of a tough schedule in the coming weeks.

United face French champions Paris St Germain in a Champions League last-16 tie, Chelsea in the FA Cup fifth round, and host arch-rivals Liverpool all within the month.
The win at Fulham lifts United into fourth place in the league, ahead of Chelsea’s visit to Manchester City on Sunday.
Pogba appeared happy with the result but remained focused on his side’s busy schedule ahead.
“The good atmosphere helps the team, and for me, being more in the box gives me more chances to score... There’s still a long way to go and we have a lot of big games coming up,” he told BBC.
Fulham remain in relegation territory in 19th place, and they too have a tough schedule ahead. Yet to win away from home this season, their next three visitors at Craven Cottage are all powerhouses – Chelsea, Liverpool and Manchester City.
Schurrle came off near the start of the second half, giving way to Cyrus Christie as the Cottagers looked for ways to get themselves back in the game.
But luck was not on their side at all, with Ryan Babel somehow managing to miss a golden opportunity from barely two feet out in the closing minutes, sending Joe Bryan’s cross onto the post and out.
The crowd, unimpressed at the Schurrle substitution and the very late introduction of promotion heroes Ryan Sessegnon and Tom Cairney, booed Fulham manager Claudio Ranieri off at the end of the match.

Solskjaer stays upbeat despite United wobble

Solskjaer stays upbeat despite United wobble

LONDON • Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has admitted that Manchester United were the architects of their "own downfall" after they were beaten by Wolves for the second time in three weeks.
Tuesday's 2-1 Premier League defeat at Molineux in which Ashley Young was sent off for two bookable offences means United have little margin for error if they are to finish in the top four.
Scott McTominay gave the away side an early lead - his first for the club - but Diogo Jota equalised after a mistake by Fred before Chris Smalling scored an own goal to inflict Solskjaer's first defeat since he was appointed on a full-time basis.
While the Norwegian had no complaints about referee Mike Dean's decision to send off Young just before the hour mark, he was frustrated that his players failed to convert more of their chances.
He said: "A very good start, we should have been three up. It was a very good performance until they scored the second goal.
"But for their goalkeeper, we should have won. That's football for you and that's why it's the game we all love, it's not like maths."
Asked whether the wobble - United have picked up three points out of a possible nine - means things are "resetting" at Old Trafford after an excellent initial impact, Solskjaer claimed he could not "control the result".

  • 3

Points won by Manchester United out of a possible nine in their last three Premier League matches.

He added: "We don't look at it as that. We can control what we do on the pitch performance-wise, and we've played well enough tonight.
"So I don't think there is any kickback. I was very pleased with the chances and the intent."
The result means the Red Devils remain fifth, and two points behind Arsenal, who have a game in hand.
They still need to face league champions Manchester City and Chelsea at home, while Luke Shaw will be suspended for their next two games after collecting his 10th yellow card of the campaign.
However, Solskjaer insisted he was still "confident" and that "it is going to be difficult for anybody who plays against us".
The 46-year-old, who revealed he had an eye on the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final against Barcelona next Wednesday, added: "Now we need 15 (points) from the last six (matches), so we don't have room for many more losses.
"It is a difficult run, but then we are a very good team as well.
"We will use one or two days to analyse and recover, and then we will prepare for Barcelona, which will be a fantastic challenge."
Separately, Fulham became the second club to be relegated after a 4-1 loss at Watford on Tuesday.
Despite splurging over £100 million (S$177.9 million) on players since winning promotion last year, it has been a wretched term for the Cottagers, who have the league's worst defensive record, shipping 76 goals in 33 games.
Owner Shahid Khan yesterday apologised to the fans for the debacle before stating that the club's hierarchy "hold ourselves accountable".

Football: Real Madrid end awful campaign with 12th league loss, benched Bale may have played last game

MADRID (REUTERS) - Real Madrid's harrowing season came to a fittingly miserable end on Sunday (May 19) as they slumped to a staggering 12th La Liga defeat, losing 2-0 at home to Real Betis as many fans left the stadium early and those who stayed booed the players off the pitch.
With Gareth Bale, Toni Kroos and Thibaut Courtois all sitting on the bench, Betis forward Loren Moron put the visitors in front in the 61st minute, completing a sweeping counter-attack by slamming the ball into the roof of the net from close range.
Former Madrid forward Jese Rodriguez sealed victory for Betis - who finished the season 10th in the standings but have earned away victories at the Nou Camp and the Santiago Bernabeu - by tapping into the net unmarked in the 75th.
Real ended the campaign third in the standings on 68 points, their lowest total since the 2001-02 season, while they lost 12 league games for the first time since the 1998-99 campaign.
They finished eight points behind runners-up Atletico Madrid and are 18 behind champions Barcelona, who visit Eibar later on Sunday.
"We started the season badly and we've finished it badly," said Madrid defender Marcelo.
"We didn't want the season to be like this at any stage, we wanted to be in finals competing for trophies, it's been a tough season, one of the hardest on a personal level, we tried to sort things out but now we're just looking to next season."
Real's only good opening in another dismal display fell to top scorer Karim Benzema, who struck the post from inside the box in the first half.
Betis dominated the play and would have scored earlier had it not been for some impressive saves from Keylor Navas, who was given a rousing reception from supporters in what was believed to be his last game for the club.

Bale left on bench

Spanish media reports also say that Bale will not be at the club next season, but the Wales forward, who was left out of the squad for last week's defeat at Real Sociedad, was given no opportunity for a final run-out at the Bernabeu.
Real's record signing and a scorer in two Champions League final triumphs, Bale was seen grimacing as he sat on the bench when his side were 2-0 down and when the full-time whistle came he walked straight down the tunnel without acknowledging fans.
Madrid coach Zinedine Zidane would not be drawn on whether Navas or Bale would leave the club, but said players' futures could not dictate whether or not he picked them.
"I don't know if it's the last game for them or not, I don't know what's going to happen. Keylor played well but we'll see what happens next season," he said.
Asked about whether Bale deserved a chance to play one last game, he said: "I'm sorry he didn't get to play, but no one knows what will happen.
"If I think a player doesn't fit in the team I have to do what I think works best. No one can change what Bale has done for the team, but as a coach I have to live in the present."

Emery wants wins, not clean sheets

LONDON • Unai Emery said he is not worried that Arsenal failed to keep a first away clean sheet of the season, as first-half goals from Alex Iwobi and Alexandre Lacazatte secured a 2-1 win at Premier League bottom side Huddersfield.
The result kept the Gunners in the thick of the chase for a top-four finish and Champions League football although questions remain about their defensive frailty.
Deep into injury time on Saturday, Adama Diakhaby broke clear on goal, lifted the ball over Bernd Leno and watched as Sead Kolasinac turned into his own goal via an unfortunate deflection.
Not that Emery was too concerned about that late blot on his team's performance.
"A clean sheet is important, but our main worry is to win," he said. "The main thing is to score one more goal than them and, after that, it is to keep a clean sheet.
"Every player worked very well and the last action, unfortunately for us they scored and also maybe they deserved it."
Arsenal have won the joint most points in the final 10 minutes of matches this season, but relying heavily on second-half turnarounds and late shows could only go on for so long.
At the heart of the problem is their defensive record - Arsenal remain the only Premier League team without an away clean sheet.
Emery had cut an increasingly animated and frustrated figure on the touchline as his team failed to kill off Huddersfield in the first period, even surviving a strong penalty appeal after Jason Puncheon's shot struck the arm of Laurent Koscielny after 25 minutes.
"That is me," he said, explaining his antics. "It is my personality. If I am here, it is because in my career I progressed like that. If for one moment I thought it's negative, then I wouldn't do it."
The win moved Arsenal to within one point of fourth-placed Manchester United (51 points), even though Chelsea could regain fourth spot with a draw or win over champions Manchester City in their late match yesterday.
Insisting that a top-four finish was a realistic target, the Spaniard said: "I think it's difficult, but we can (finish in the top four). After 26 games, we are on our way and our motivation is very great and we've brought our target closer."

LONDON (REUTERS) - Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is determined to keep Paul Pogba and Marcus Rashford at Old Trafford, saying the pair are vital to his plans of building a team "worthy of the history of the club".
While on international duty, United's record signing Pogba said it would be a "dream" to play for Zinedine Zidane's Real Madrid, while Rashford has been linked with a move to Barcelona in the British media.
"They are vital for our future," Solskjaer, who was named United's permanent manager on Thursday (March 28), told reporters.
"You have got loads of players who you can build a team around and those are two that you asked me about."
Since Solskjaer took over as United's caretaker in December, Pogba has enjoyed the more freedom and tactical flexibility to become one of the most influential players in the Premier League, recording eight goals and six assists.
Rashford, meanwhile, has become the Norwegian manager's first-choice striker and the 21-year-old has responded with eight goals in 18 appearances across all competitions.
When asked if the pair can realise their ambition at United, Solskjaer added: "I would believe so. That's our aim as a club, to be achieving what we have done in the past. That is the expectations here.
"Of course, we are hoping to build a team strong enough (to be) worthy of the history of the club."

United's short-term target is to secure a Premier League top-four finish and qualification for the Champions League but Solskjaer wants the club to target the league title next season.
Club captain Antonio Valencia and Matteo Darmian could leave at the end of the campaign while United are linked with England wingers Jadon Sancho and Callum Hudson-Odoi, at Borussia Dortmund and Chelsea respectively, and Napoli centre-back Kalidou Koulibaly.
United are expected to back Solskjaer with substantial funds to rebuild the squad but the Norwegian said he would not spend recklessly.
"People who know me know that I will use that in a good way," he said.
"We have a plan with the club, they have scouted players for longer than I have been here, and we have players that we need to keep. We will not spend money just to spend money."

SINGAPORE - His team were crying out for a saviour in Oslo, Norway, on Sunday night (May 12) and Ikhsan Fandi delivered.
With one minute left and the game against Skeid tied at 2-2, five Raufoss IL players surged into the opponents’ penalty box when Mikkel Maigaard whipped in a hopeful cross from the right.
Ikhsan had his back to goal but was first to react to meet the cross, improvising with an overhead kick to send the ball into the bottom corner for dramatic winner and his first competitive goal for Raufoss.
The 20-year-old had replaced Ryan Doghman in the 75th minute when his team were 2-1 down, and made his cameo count.
He told The Straits Times: “I’m shocked because I  never  expected my first competitive goal to come from a bicycle kick. It feels even more amazing when it’s the match-winner. This may be just one goal, but this is not just for me.
“It’s for my family and all the people in Singapore supporting me. I will keep working hard to earn more playing time and try to score more goals.”
The 3-2 away win extended Raufoss’ unbeaten league run to four games, and propelled the second-tier Norwegian side to fourth place on 13 points after seven games.
They trail Aalesund (16 points), Sandefjord (15) and Start (13 and better goal difference) in the 16-team 1. Division. The top two teams earn automatic promotion while third to sixth enter the play-off for the last slot.
Raufoss coach Christian Johnsen said: “It was about time, regardless of the result, to let him play. Today, he was really good when he came in.
“He has many of the qualities – speed and physicality – and he is also a nice and humble lad who works hard, so we know he has great potential.
“However, in football, it is all about being in shape, and he’s starting to get there now.”

While Ikhsan had scored for Raufoss in pre-season friendlies, his acrobatic winner was his first goal in a competitive fixture.
It is the first time in 30 years a Singaporean has scored a senior goal for a professional European football club since V. Sundram Moorthy netted the last of his three goals for Swiss side FC Basel in 1989.
Ikhsan’s father, Fandi Ahmad, was the only other Singaporean to accomplish the feat with 11 league goals for Dutch team Groningen from 1983 to 1985.
Remarkably, Ikhsan’s goal comes after just 92 minutes of league action. Even though he has played in the last six league matches, they were all substitute appearances.

Fandi told The Straits Times: "I'm happy for him. He has been wanting to show what he can do, and he injected life into his team when they were down.
"I told him the coach (Christian Johnsen) has faith in him, and that's why he has been getting playing time. Even though it is not easy coming on late in the game - if they are winning, has has to do more pressing and defending - he must be patient because he will get his chance.
"Overall, we have been getting positive feedback. In a new environment, he has adapted well. He just needs to be confident because he can do better. It is good for him to learn like this, and he must not underestimate his own talent."
Ikhsan's older brother Irfan, 21, is also flourishing with Thai League 2 side BG Pathum United.
With 31 points from 12 games, BG Pathum are top of the table and on track for a swift return to the top tier.
And the Singapore international defender has played his part with six clean sheets, three goals and two Man-of-the-Match awards.
Irfan said: "T2 is not a league to be looked down upon because it is physically very tough and players also have to be mentally strong.
"It has been a good experience playing alongside very experienced and talented footballers.
"Being only 21 and entrusted with a key role, I feel I have a huge responsibility in defence, but we have worked well as a team to get to where we are at the moment.
"We have had to play one league and one cup game in a week recently, so it can take its toll and proper recovery is very important. I hope my team stay healthy and fit so we can fight for promotion and silverware."
Fandi said: "Irfan is doing very well in Thailand and their technical director Surachai Jaturapattarapong is very happy with how he is commanding their defence.
"Like I have been saying, I hope more of our footballers venture overseas and improve from playing in a strong league because that can only be good for the national team."

Reds will not spend big money

Reds will not spend big money

LONDON • Jurgen Klopp has said that Liverpool are unlikely to "spend the big money" on signings this summer, with the club investing to consolidate his title-chasing squad instead.
The Reds were the biggest-spending Premier League club last summer as Alisson Becker, Fabinho, Naby Keita and Xherdan Shaqiri arrived to help close the domestic gap to Manchester City.
The club's financial strategy has since altered, however, to focus more on contract renewals rather than signings.
Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane, Roberto Firmino, Andy Robertson, Jordan Henderson, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Joe Gomez and Rhian Brewster have signed new long-term deals since last April that will cost Liverpool £150 million (S$266 million) to £200 million in wage rises over the coming years.
"I don't want to talk exactly what we will do but I don't think this is a team at the moment where we have to spend the big money or whatever," the Reds manager said ahead of today's league trip to Fulham.
"The best way to do it is bring together a group of players, try to develop them altogether and then stay together for a while.
"And that was maybe the main problem of Liverpool for the last decade. When they had a good team after a season, they went all over the world. That will not happen this year for sure."
He believes Liverpool's development took "a big step" with the midweek Champions League victory at Bayern Munich, a result that set up a quarter-final date with Porto.
The German said: "When you think about how Bayern faced us... I never saw them being that defensive-orientated. They had a lot of respect for us but I am not sure we always have the same amount of respect for ourselves."
Fresh from a momentous European night, his team can earn a psychological boost going into the two-week international break by retaking the EPL top spot from City, who play at Swansea in the FA Cup this weekend. They have 73 points and trail the champions by a point with eight games left.
Fulham have very different priorities as they try to pull off a great escape from relegation.
After sacking two managers already this term, Scott Parker's first two games against Chelsea and Leicester have also ended in defeat.
However, he believes his side can cause a major upset and deliver a blow to Liverpool's title challenge.
"Hopefully we'll have an influence on the title race," he said. "We've got some very good footballers at the club and we need to start getting the best out of them...
"If we play the way we want to play, we can cause an upset and we can get points."

EPL Title hopes far from over: Guardiola

EPL Title hopes far from over: Guardiola

LONDON • Pep Guardiola's 100th Premier League game had looked to be a mere formality after Sergio Aguero's opener against Newcastle after only 24 seconds - the quickest Premier League goal this season.
However, his players failed to build on their lightning start as Manchester City slumped to a shock 2-1 loss at St James' Park on Tuesday to put their title defence in jeopardy.
Although Guardiola, who is now facing the hardest challenge of his stewardship, insisted post-game the title race was not over as "there are still many games and anything can happen", there seemed to be a hint of resignation with leaders Liverpool in the box seat.
He said: "We had a chance today to reduce the lead. Tomorrow is a game for our opponents. When you are behind, you have to win games and we couldn't do that."
Denying that the English champions had underestimated Newcastle, he added: "We'd never do that and that's the reason why we're still in four competitions. That's why we recorded 100 points last season.
"It's just sometimes, we don't play at the level we want to play and that can happen, that's something I understand completely."
But after admitting "it was not our best night" with their flat and careless display on Tyneside, talk of an unprecedented quadruple will be on the back-burner for now .
The Spaniard said: "I know the challenge is big, being in all competitions is what it is. If you want to go up as a club, you have to accept that challenge. I prefer to be in that position."

THERE IS STILL TIME
A lead of seven points is a lot but we're not in April or May. There are a lot of tough games to play against sides trying to stay in this division, or playing to get into the Europa League or the Champions League.
PEP GUARDIOLA, Man City manager, keeping his chin up despite expecting Liverpool to beat Leicester last night.

It must have come as a real surprise to him after a sluggish City conceded for the first time since Roberto Firmino netted on Jan 3. It was a series of 30 unanswered strikes before Salomon Rondon's and Matt Ritchie's spot kick on Tuesday.
Guardiola added: "We didn't make a good performance. We didn't take the rhythm of the game, it was slow and we weren't aggressive enough.
"The game was not good. We did not defend the second ball well, we have to improve."
Conceding "next week will be tough" - City have to play Arsenal, Everton and Chelsea in seven days - he challenged his side to rise to the occasion as there were "a lot of titles and points to play for".
The 48-year-old also attempted to put a spin on the upset and their tricky run of upcoming fixtures as they "were still in January", and so, there could be plenty more twists and turns in Liverpool's bid to end a 29-year wait to win the league.
He said: "There's a lot of time but of course, when you're behind the leaders, you don't want to drop points and every game is one less.
"A lead of seven points is a lot but we're not in April or May. There are a lot of tough games to play against sides trying to stay in this division, or playing to get into the Europa League or the Champions League.
"In our case, we will do our best to be there and not to give up."
With City's unremitting pressing and cutting interplay curiously absent against Rafa Benitez's men, it meant he also missed out on an outright record of achieving most wins in the league era by any manager in their first 100 games.
Instead, he will now share that landmark with his old rival and former Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho, who won 73 of his first 100 games with Chelsea.

Football: Messi back for Argentina for first time since World Cup

BUENOS AIRES (AFP) - Lionel Messi was named in the Argentina squad on Thursday (March 7) for the first time since the World Cup, ending a self-imposed eight month exile.
Interim coach Lionel Scaloni named the five-time world player of the year in his squad for this month's friendlies against Venezuela and Morocco.
The 31-year-old Barcelona star hasn't pulled on the light blue and white national team jersey since Argentina were dumped out of the World Cup last June by eventual winners France.
Another long-term absentee, PSG's Angel Di Maria, also makes the squad, but there is no place for other veterans Sergio Aguero - despite his sparkling form for Manchester City - Chelsea's Gonzalo Higuain or Mauro Icardi of Inter.
"The World Cup was a big disappointment for everyone, for him even more so," Scaloni told reporters at Argentina's Ezeiza training center outside Buenos Aires.
"And then in the friendlies he saw us play, he liked it, and he wants to try again, and he's welcome."
Scaloni said "Messi prefers to come than to rest," despite the demands of a heavy fixture list for his club.
"Leo is being called up now, and then we'll see if he plays a match or two - or none. I don't know. That's a decision I'll take."
In all, Messi has missed six friendlies since the World Cup in Russia but many believe he will be an essential part of the team that travels to Brazil for the Copa America, which kicks off June 14.
Whilst he's built up an almost unprecedented collection of trophies with his club, Messi is running out of time to taste major international success with Argentina.
He was on the losing side in major finals three years running from 2014-16, first to Germany in the World Cup in Brazil, then twice to Chile on penalties in the Copa America, including the one-off Centenary edition of the competition.
With 65 goals in 128 appearances, Messi is Argentina's all-time top goalscorer. He's also Barca's top marksman ever with more than twice the number of goals as the next best.
But he's never managed to match his club form when operating on the international stage.
Argentina play Venezuela in Madrid on March 22 and then travel to Tangier four days later to tackle hosts Morocco.

Hazard claims he's a 'leader' in wake of Sarri criticism

LONDON • Eden Hazard felt that his starring role in Chelsea's 2-1 win over Tottenham in the second leg of their League Cup semi-final before a 4-2 penalty shoot-out victory proved his leadership qualities.
The hosts overcame a 1-0 first-leg deficit to set up a meeting with Manchester City on Feb 24, with Maurizio Sarri's men reacting impressively after they were accused of lacking "battling and fighting qualities" in the defeat at Arsenal on Jan 20.
Hazard, who was restored to the flank, was outstanding as Chelsea surged to a 2-0 half-time lead following goals from the forward and N'Golo Kante.
Fernando Llorente pulled one back for Spurs after the break, but the Blues' clinical edge from the spot saw them book their 15th Cup final in 17 years on Thursday.
This was the first year away goals have not counted in the semi-final stage since 1980.
Sarri suggested in the build-up to the game that, while a wonderfully gifted footballer, Hazard was more of "an individual player".
The Italian later claimed reaching the first major final of his coaching career would breathe new "enthusiasm" into Chelsea's season and he had not been seeking to criticise his players.
But Belgium international Hazard was adamant that he "did not care" about his manager's assessment, insisting that "on the pitch, I'm a leader".
He said in a post-game interview: "My job on the pitch is to do what I can do. Today, I did, so I am just happy.
"(In) the meeting we had before the game, we talked about going through and playing in the final. Now, we are in the final so we are just happy."
Looking ahead to the Wembley final next month, Hazard admitted that while "it was always hard" against City as "they are the best team in the Premier League at the moment, (along) with Liverpool", the final would likely be a "50-50 game".
He added: "They win a lot of trophies in the last five or six years, but we also have a great team."

Football: Zohore gives Cardiff 2-1 win over Southampton in thrilling finish

SOUTHAMPTON, England (REUTERS) - Cardiff City's Kenneth Zohore struck deep into stoppage time to secure a crucial 2-1 win on Saturday (Feb 9) at fellow Premier League strugglers Southampton, who thought they had snatched a point with a 91st-minute equaliser.
Southampton's Jack Stephens bundled the ball into the net in added time, but Cardiff went back up the other end and substitute Zohore scuffed home a shot to give Cardiff only their second away win of the season.
After a slow start, Southampton upped the tempo in the second half but they were hit by a sucker punch when centre back Sol Bamba pounced, volleying home Callum Paterson's knockdown from Cardiff's first corner of the game in the 69th minute.
The win lifted Cardiff out of the relegation zone and into 15th place, while Southampton will slip into the bottom three if Burnley get at least a point in Saturday's late kickoff against Brighton and Hove Albion.
It was another emotional day for Cardiff following the recovery of the body of striker Emiliano Sala, who died in a plane that crashed taking him to join up with the Welsh club after he signed from French side Nantes.
The game was preceded by a minute's silence for the 28-year-old Argentine, who was Cardiff's record signing, and the players of both teams wore black armbands.
After beating Bournemouth 2-0 last week, the victory over Southampton marked the first time Cardiff have won back-to-back games in the Premier League, and Bamba believes his side had a little help from above.

"It can't get better, scoring the first goal in front of our fans. A lot goes through your mind. I know Emiliano Sala was looking from up there so it's good to get the three points," he said.
After picking up nine points from the first five league games of 2019, Southampton boss Ralph Hasenhuttl was left to rue his side's defending.
"If you score an equaliser in added time, you have to take a minimum of one point. It would help us a lot for the mentality, the atmosphere and the feeling for the future," he said.
"What we did now was to roll a big stone in our way, and to remove that will take a lot of time."
