Football: Brazil soccer star Pele hospitalised in Paris, RMC Sport reports

PARIS (REUTERS) - Brazil soccer great Pele was hospitalised in Paris late on Tuesday (April 2) with a strong fever but his condition is not life-threatening, RMC Sport reported.
The 78-year-old was admitted as a precaution after attending an event in the French capital with France's World Cup winning youngster Kylian Mbappe.
A representative for Pele in Brazil could not immediately be reached for comment.
Pele was still in hospital on Wednesday afternoon, RMC reported, though in a possible sign he was making a recovery, he said on Twitter: "I met Kylian Mbappe and his parents last night in Paris at @Hublot event. We talked goals, World Cups and watches. Great company!"
Earlier, Mbappe had written on social media: "I had the chance this evening to spend a once-in-a-lifetime moment with the living legend @Pele."
Pele, revered by many as soccer's greatest player ever, is alone in winning the World Cup three times, first lifting the trophy aged 17.
The Brazilian was swift to praise Mbappe after he set last year's World Cup in Russia alight with his electric speed and goalscoring.

Mbappe became the youngest player (19) to score two goals in a World Cup game since Pele in 1958.
He also became the first teenager since Pele to score in a World Cup final.
"If Kylian keeps equalling my records like this I may have to dust my boots off again," Pele tweeted at the time.
Mbappe replied: "The King will always remain King."
The Paris St Germain forward told Tuesday's event he would never match the Brazil great's scoring tally during his career.

Pele claims he has scored 1,025 goals.
"Even with the goals in playgrounds, goals on the PlayStation, I could never equal (that)," the 20-year-old said at the sponsors' event.
Mbappe and Pele had been scheduled to meet late last year but had to postpone, again because of Pele's health, French media said.

Football: 10-man Schalke draw blank ahead of Man City clash

BERLIN (AFP) - Schalke 04 warmed-up for the Champions League visit of Manchester City with a goalless draw at home to fellow Bundesliga strugglers Freiburg on Saturday (Feb 16).
Schalke are winless in their last three Bundesliga games and sit just above the relegation places in 14th spot.
Next up is a huge challenge at home to Pep Guardiola's Premier League giants Man City in their Champions League last 16, first-leg tie on Wednesday.
Schalke qualified for the Champions League by finishing runners-up to Bayern Munich last season, but despite dreadful recent results, Schalke head coach Domenico Tedesco says they are ready to host City.
"We deserve to have got this far," Tedesco insisted after Schalke won half their games to finish second behind Porto in their Champions League group.
"We have to prepare well and everyone needs to be at 100 percent. We believe we have a chance - otherwise there would be no point playing."
Both Schalke and Freiburg finished with ten men as the Royal Blues played for nearly 50 minutes without defensive midfielder Suat Serdar, sent off for a first-half foul.
In the dying stages, Freiburg defender Christian Guenter was dismissed for a second yellow card.
"Regardless of the red card (Serdar), we didn't do what we wanted to do which was to put pressure on the Freiburg goal," said Tedesco.

PENALTY APPEAL

Schalke came close to conceding a penalty with 10 minutes left when Spanish midfielder Omar Mascarell was suspected of a handball, but the video assistant referee (VAR) over-ruled the referee's initial decision.
Welsh teenage winger Rabbi Matondo, who Schalke signed last month from Man City, struggled to make an impact on only his second Bundesliga appearance, his first over 90 minutes.
The 18-year-old had a good chance with 16 minutes left but ballooned his shot over the bar.
Freiburg hit the Schalke woodwork twice in the second half through substitutes Jerome Gondorf and Luca Waldschmidt.
Meanwhile, Claudio Pizarro, the Bundesliga's record foreign goal-scorer, claimed another milestone when he became the league's oldest scorer.
Aged 40 years and 136 days, the Peru striker claimed his 195th Bundesliga goal in dramatic fashion to equalise with the last kick of the game in Werder Bremen's 1-1 draw at Hertha Berlin.
Pizarro smashed a speculative free-kick under Hertha's wall and it took two deflections before hitting the net in the 96th minute.
Pizarro's late strike cost Hertha the chance to go sixth after the hosts had taken a deserved first-half lead through Davie Selke and twice hit the woodwork.
League leaders Borussia Dortmund are at bottom side Nuremberg on Monday.
They are two points ahead of Bayern Munich, who won 3-2 at Augsburg on Friday.
RB Leipzig took their chance to stay in the title race as a 3-1 win at Stuttgart left them fourth, just a point behind Borussia Moenchengladbach, who play Sunday at Eintracht Frankfurt.
Yussuf Poulsen netted two goals as Leipzig took the three points.
The Denmark striker opened the scoring after just six minutes when Leipzig's Germany striker Timo Werner fired in a cross, which clipped a defender's knee for Poulsen to tap home.
Steven Zuber equalised from the spot for Stuttgart ten minutes later when the video assistant referee spotted the ball had hit Willi Orban's arm after a Mario Gomez header.
However, Leipzig rallied as midfielder Marcel Sabitzer curled home a superb free-kick with 20 minutes left, then Poulsen claimed his second goal soon after, tapping home following an impressive run by US international Tyler Adams.
Wolfsburg climbed to fifth with a 3-0 win at Mainz with goals by midfielder Maximilian Arnold, striker Wout Weghorst and defender Robin Knoche.
Hoffenheim also moved up after Algeria forward Ishak Belfodil, Brazilian striker Joelinton and Germany midfielder Kerem Demirbay netted in their 3-0 win at second-from-bottom Hanover 96 to go seventh.

He had been guiding his intellectually impaired counterpart on the proper way to kick a football during an hour-long clinic.
And, when the boy could finally do it yesterday, the joy on his face was one that Valencia youth player Dario Serra will never forget for the rest of his life.
"The students are just like us, but they have added disabilities, so we had to be very patient with them to ensure that they have fun," said the 16-year-old, who was among 24 other Valencia youth and 12 coaches who conducted a football clinic with 24 students at Fernvale Gardens School yesterday.
"When a boy I was helping could finally kick the ball, it was a wonderful moment. I could see in his eyes that he was having a good time."
The LaLiga entourage arrived at the Sengkang-based school to hugs from the pupils, aged seven to 12, who were excitedly waiting for them. The players gave the pupils high fives and souvenir pins before they proceeded to the field for the hour-long clinic.
The school's principal Gerard Vaz, 46, thought that it was an eye-opening experience for his pupils, and said: "We always look for these kind of opportunities for the kids to mix around.
"This gives them the chance to put some of the sporting skills that they learn during their PE (physical education) lessons into action."
Following the clinic, seven adults from the Movement for the Intellectually Disabled of Singapore's Idea-Employment Development Centre mixed it up with the Valencia youth players for a 20-minute friendly game.

MADRID (AFP) - Karim Benzema shot Real Madrid to within two points of La Liga leaders Barcelona with the winner in a scrappy 1-0 win over Rayo Vallecano, while countryman Antoine Griezmann fired a brace in a 3-2 win over Real Valladolid to take Atletico Madrid level with Barca.
Benzema's 13th-minute strike was enough for Real to move up to third on 29 points, two behind Barca, who travel to Levante on Sunday evening (Dec 16), and second-placed Atleti. Sevilla have the chance to move back above Real and level with the leading pair when they host mid-table Girona early on Sunday.
However, they were made to sweat for the three points by plucky Rayo, who are second-from-bottom but would have snatched a point in stoppage time had Sergio Ramos not cleared the second of Thibaut Courtois' double saves, from Alex Alegria and Emiliano Velazquez, off the line.
Little was seen from Real stars like Luka Modric, who was presented with his Ballon d'Or ahead of the match at the Santiago Bernabeu, and fans showed their displeasure at the end of an uninspiring contest.
Earlier, Griezmann struck the winner for Diego Simeone's Atleti 10 minutes from the end after Valladolid had fought back from a two goal half-time deficit.
The Frenchman had played a key role in building the early lead. The World Cup winner laid on Nikola Kalinic's second goal of the season in the 26th minute with a superb through ball, then put his side two up on the stroke of half-time.
After Kiko Olivas handled Griezmann's long-range shot, and referee Undiano Mallenco pointed to the spot after a video review, the Frenchman slotted home a neat penalty .
The hosts came roaring back in the second half, twice forcing fine saves from Jan Oblak before Fernando Calero scored for the hosts from a 56th-minute corner.
Saul Niguez then inadvertently pushed Enes Unal's header into his own net nine minutes later, and Valladolid pushed for victory.
However Griezmann stole the three points in a frantic finale, cooly steering home the winner after a scramble in the box following a corner.

Football: Mahrez strikes as Man City beat Bournemouth to go top

BOURNEMOUTH, England (REUTERS) - Substitute Riyad Mahrez scored the only goal as Manchester City beat Bournemouth 1-0 at the Vitality Stadium on Saturday (March 2) to return to the top of the Premier League.
The home side showed champions City plenty of respect in the opening 45 minutes, defending deep and forcing their opponents to probe patiently for openings, and they conceded little in the way of goalscoring chances.
City manager Pep Guardiola was forced to replace the injured Kevin De Bruyne with Mahrez at halftime, and he was quickly followed by defender John Stones, who was substituted early in the second half with a thigh problem.
The visitors continued to probe and their patience finally paid off when David Silva teed up Mahrez, who lashed home a shot with his right foot to break the deadlock 10 minutes into the second half.
Bournemouth were unable to raise their game and goalkeeper Artur Boruc pulled of a number of fine saves.
He was quick off his line to thwart a breakaway attempt by Raheem Sterling and Aguero clipped the underside of the crossbar before Boruc beat away a close-range header from Mahrez.
"We made one of the best performances we have played. They were very organised, but they didn't have one shot. We created a few chances. People should understand how difficult it is to attack 11 (defending) players," Guardiola said.
Bournemouth boss Eddie Howe was disappointed to see his side's defensive efforts undone by what he termed an "ugly" goal.
"You want to be competitive and that was the way for us to make the game tight, show toughness and mentally hang in. The only frustration is their goal was ugly, which is very unlike them," he said.
The win put City top on 71 points, two ahead of Liverpool who face Everton in the Merseyside derby on Sunday. Bournemouth, who have lost four of their last five, remained 12th on 34 points.

Fulham 1
Liverpool 2
LONDON • Liverpool usurped Manchester City to take top spot in the Premier League, but needed a James Milner penalty nine minutes from time to see off lowly Fulham 2-1 at Craven Cottage yesterday.
The in-form Sadio Mane put the visitors in front midway through the first half, but a rare defensive mix-up between Virgil van Dijk and Alisson Becker allowed Ryan Babel to give his former club a huge scare 16 minutes from time.
Fulham's awful defending all season is the reason they are heading back to the Championship after just one season back in the top flight, and the hosts gave Jurgen Klopp's men a much-needed gift when goalkeeper Sergio Rico bundled over Mane and Milner secured all three points from the spot.
Most of their attacking threat came down their left side in the first half and that proved the source of the breakthrough on 26 minutes.
Mane took his hot streak to 11 goals in 11 games with a simple finish after exchanging passes with Roberto Firmino.
At the other end, Babel was Fulham's biggest threat all afternoon and Tom Cairney fired wastefully over after he outpaced Trent Alexander-Arnold before the break.
The Reds started the second half with greater intent to try and put the game to bed.

SPOT ON
We made it difficult for ourselves; we weren't calm enough on the ball, and then my mistake made it even more exciting.
VIRGIL VAN DIJK, Liverpool defender, on his miscommunication with goalkeeper Alisson which led to Fulham's equaliser.

However, as a torrential rain shower swept over the banks of the Thames to make playing conditions hazardous, Liverpool's slender lead proved a dangerous one.
While Mane was inches away from doubling his tally for the day with a deft header from a corner that clipped the top of the crossbar, disaster seemed to have struck for Liverpool when van Dijk's header back towards Alisson did not have enough pace and Babel nipped in to tap into an empty net.
However, the league leaders showed why they are in the running to end a 29-year title drought to get a vital three points with the help of some erratic goalkeeping from Rico.
Mohamed Salah's goal drought continued with just one strike in his last 10 games, but it was his shot that Rico spilled before the Spaniard unnecessarily pulled down Mane.
Milner took responsibility from the penalty spot and calmly sent Rico the wrong way to restore Liverpool's lead nine minutes from time, and this time they never looked like throwing it away.
The Reds now hold a two-point lead over Pep Guardiola's side, but the champions have a game in hand.

Football: World Cup winner Buffon to leave PSG

PARIS (AFP) - Gianluigi Buffon will leave Paris Saint-Germain this summer after it was agreed to not renew the former Italy captain's contract, the French champions announced on Wednesday (June 5).
"Following joint discussions, Paris Saint-Germain and Gianluigi Buffon have agreed to not renew the legendary goalkeeper's contract which expires on 30 June 2019," PSG said in a statement.
The 41-year-old goalkeeper, who won the World Cup in 2006 and is Italy's most-capped player with 176 appearances, did not say whether he would be retiring from the game after leaving the French capital.
He joined PSG last summer after ending a trophy-packed 17-year career at Italian giants Juventus and played 25 times in all competitions for PSG last season, winning the Ligue 1 title and the pre-season Champions Trophy.
"Today my adventure outside Italy comes to an end," Buffon said in a statement.
"Ernest Hemingway wrote that there are only two places in the world where people can live happily: at home and in Paris. Today onwards, this will also apply to me: Paris, in some way, will always remain my home."
This season's league title was the 10th of Buffon's career, adding to a bulging trophy cabinet that contains just about every honour in football.
However the Champions League has eluded him despite him spending the bulk of his career at Juve, one of Europe's biggest clubs, and it was hoped that he might break his duck with the Qatari-funded Parisians.
However despite winning the league at a canter, the past season was a poor one for both Buffon and a team with lofty ambitions on the European stage.
They missed out on both domestic cup competitions and most importantly were dumped out of the Champions League by Manchester United in embarrassing style, blowing a 2-0 first-leg lead to go out on away goals following a controversial last-gasp penalty.
Buffon made a crucial error that helped United achieve their remarkable comeback, spilling Marcus Rashford's weak shot into the path of Romelu Lukaku to allow the Belgian to score the away side's second and set up a dramatic finish.

Football: Paul Pogba wants to stay at Man United, says Ole Gunnar Solskjaer

MANCHESTER (AFP) - Ole Gunnar Solskjaer says he has been assured by star midfielder Paul Pogba that the Frenchman does not want to leave Manchester United despite mounting speculation over a switch to Real Madrid.
United midfielder Pogba last week described Madrid, managed by France great Zinedine Zidane, as a "dream club for every player" while on international duty.
Fuel was then poured on the fire ahead of Madrid's game at the weekend when the Real boss admitted that Pogba would be welcome at the Bernabeu if and when he decides to call time on his United career.
Zidane is expected to have a big transfer budget this summer to shake things up. Real crashed out of the Champions League to Ajax at the last-16 stage and trail Barcelona by 12 points in LaLiga.
Solskjaer was appointed permanent manager at Old Trafford only last week but the future of United's most high-profile player is once again in the spotlight.
Madrid have a track record of taking some of United's star names, with both David Beckham and Cristiano Ronaldo swapping Old Trafford for the Bernabeu, but Solskjaer said he is not worried by the Pogba situation.
"It doesn't really concern me because my thought of action was to sit down and speak to Paul," he said on Monday (April 1).
"I have had my chat with Paul and we're fine. He is going to do his utmost here because he knows I am very fond of him as a player and as a person. He is important for us here, so there are no issues. He is happy here."
Solskjaer's immediate priority is United's trip to Wolves on Tuesday for their rearranged Premier League game.
They have a big chance to put pressure on their rivals for a top-four spot by picking up a win at Molineux but know it will not be easy after Wolves knocked them out of the FA Cup last month.
Saturday's 2-1 win at home to Watford moved United level on points with Tottenham and they would go third, at least temporarily, with another victory.
United languished 11 points off the top-four spots when Solskjaer replaced Jose Mourinho in December and the Norwegian is delighted that his team are now in control of their own destiny.
He has set a target of five wins from their remaining seven games and does not feel his players are going to ease up, despite a sub-par performance against Watford.
"I don't think I need to remind the players about their standards dropping," he said. "They know themselves. They want to be in the Champions League and they want to perform as well as they possibly can.
"Maybe they didn't believe in it themselves in November or December but we are in with a chance.
"Everyone knows that if we do our jobs and get 15 points over the last seven games, we will be in the Champions League next year.
"It's the final stretch, so it's not a time to change. We need the same mindset as we have had. It's a question of going into games thinking that we are going to win.
"Against Watford we did not get going until 15 or 20 minutes into the match but I am not worried because we have so many nice games to look forward to between now and the end of the season."

Football: Wayne Rooney bags first MLS hat-trick in D.C. romp over Real Salt Lake

LOS ANGELES (AFP) - Former England and Manchester United football star Wayne Rooney scored three goals on Saturday (March 16) night to lead D.C. United to a crushing 5-0 victory over Real Salt Lake.
The 33-year-old registered his first three goals of the new season and also his first hat-trick since signing moving to Major League Soccer in July 2018. He now has five multi-goal games.
Lucas Rodriguez and Ulises Segura also scored for the hosts, who peppered the Salt Lake goal with 22 shots.
Goalkeeper Bill Hamid made two stops to earn his third straight shutout as D.C. United are the lone team to have not allowed a goal this season.
Rooney scored a penalty in the 34th minute and then added another with a chip shot over goalkeeper Nicholas Rimando in the 41st. He completed the hat-trick with a perfectly timed sliding score in the 65th minute.
Elsewhere, Uruguay international Nicolas Lodeiro set up one goal and scored an audacious penalty as the Seattle Sounders maintained their 100 per cent start to the season with a 4-2 victory at Chicago Fire.
The Sounders made it three wins out of three after taking control of the game with two unanswered goals in the opening 15 minutes at Chicago's SeatGeek Stadium.
Spanish winger Victor Rodriguez fired Seattle into the lead after eight minutes, tucking away a low finish at the far post after good work down the right by Jordan Morris.
Lodeiro then created Seattle's second, splitting open Chicago's defence with a sublime pass to Morris.
The US international striker still had plenty to do, but adjusted his body position brilliantly to steer a finish beyond Chicago goalkeeper David Ousted to make it 2-0.
Seattle extended their lead early in the second half when Rodriguez was bundled over in the area on 49 minutes, allowing Lodeiro to step up and chip a Panenka penalty in off the underside of the bar.
Chicago hit back with goals from Raheem Edwards and Fabian Herbers but Raul Ruidiaz's late goal made the game safe for Seattle, who now lead the Western Conference standings with a maximum nine points.
Minnesota United, who took maximum points from their opening two games, failed to draw level later after losing 3-2 away to the Los Angeles Galaxy.
Los Angeles FC, the only other team to make a perfect start to the season, face New York City FC on Sunday.

Football: Recovering Pele set to return to Brazil on Monday, says adviser

PARIS (AFP) - Brazilian football legend Pele, who has been in hospital in Paris, will return to Brazil on Monday, his adviser told AFP on Saturday (April 6).
"We're going back to Sao Paulo on Monday," said the adviser, without providing any more details.
The three-time World Cup winner was admitted to a Paris hospital with a urinary tract infection on Wednesday, the day after appearing at a promotional event with France striker Kylian Mbappe.
The hospital has not said when the 78-year-old will be discharged.
Brazilian news website G1 reported that Pele had intended to come out of hospital on Saturday to return to Brazil but had been delayed by further tests and would stay under observation until he was 100 per cent.
The infection was not serious and was under control, according to members of Pele's entourage.
"Thank you so much for all the love! The antibiotics are working," Pele tweeted on Friday.
"I'm feeling much better and I think I'm ready to play again!"

The event in Paris was originally scheduled for November but the Brazilian "was not in a position to travel".
Pele has had several health issues in recent years.
A similar infection put him in intensive care in November 2014.
In 2016, Pele, who played 1,363 professional matches scoring 1,281 goals, was unable to light the flame at the Rio Olympics because of severe pain in the hip.
"I was not physically fit to participate in the opening of the Games," he said at the time.
In January 2018, he cancelled a trip to London fearing a "stressful" and "tiring" journey.

Football: Tottenham's Kane has 'significant' ankle ligament damage

LONDON (REUTERS) - Tottenham Hotspur's England striker Harry Kane suffered serious ankle ligament damage in Tuesday's 1-0 Champions League victory over Manchester City, the Premier League club said on Thursday (April 11).
Kane rolled his left ankle in the second half of the quarter-final first leg after a hefty tackle on City defender Fabian Delph and left the field immediately.
Spurs gave no timeframe for when Kane might be fit again.
"Following assessment over the past two days, we can confirm that Harry Kane has sustained a significant lateral ligament injury to his left ankle following a challenge in our Champions League quarter-final, first leg win against Manchester City," Spurs said on their website.
"Investigations are ongoing and he will continue to be assessed by our medical staff over the coming week."
The England captain, who has scored 24 goals in all competitions this season, left the club's new stadium on crutches with a protective boot on his foot.
On Wednesday, 25-year-old Kane had tweeted: "Gutted to go off injured but every setback is a chance to come back stronger than ever. Big finish from the boys to go on and win!"

Spurs also said England midfielder Dele Alli had fractured his left hand in Tuesday's game and was being assessed to see if he can play against relegated Huddersfield Town on Saturday.
Fourth-placed Tottenham are battling for a top-four finish to claim a Champions League spot for next season. They trail third-placed Chelsea by two points, with a game in hand, and lead fellow London rivals Arsenal by one point.

BARCELONA (AFP) - Barcelona winger Ousmane Dembele returned to team training on Thursday (April 4), increasing hopes that he will recover from his hamstring injury in time for next week's Champions League trip to Manchester United.
"Jasper Cillessen (also out injured) and Ousmane Dembele were back training with the group," the La Liga leaders said on their website.
Dembele was ruled out for around a month after picking up a hamstring injury during Barca's 5-1 hammering of Lyon that booked them the quarter-final clash with United, with the Frenchman scoring the fifth after coming on as a second-half substitute.
Spanish media report that the World Cup winner will not be back in time for the weekend's visit of Atletico Madrid - who are second in La Liga but eight points behind Barca - but could be ready for the first leg at Old Trafford on Wednesday.

Football: Sarri worried about Chelsea's 'mental block'

LONDON • Maurizio Sarri has accused his side of switching off mentally as Chelsea provided Everton's first top-six scalp in 26 games, a run dating back to January 2017.
Speaking after their 2-0 Premier League loss at Goodison Park on Sunday, the Italian also expressed his fears that a top-four place may be beyond his team if he cannot rectify their "mental block".
He said: "At the moment this is our limit. In my opinion, the first 45 minutes were the best we have played all season, then in the second half, we stopped playing.
"We forgot how to defend, forgot how to counter-attack and that is a problem for us, because even if you don't score, you have to stay in the match."
Chelsea, who have now failed to score in eight of 30 league games, could have been three or four goals up at half-time, and Sarri was perplexed by the collective drop in standards that saw Everton take control of the game after the break.
"We were good up to the last minute of the first half and bad from the first minute of the second," the Blues manager said.
"I'm worried about our mentality, the situation is clear. We were in control of the game, all we had to do was continue, and we could not do that.

  • Premier League talking points

  • 1 MADDISON STARS FROM THE WING
Brendan Rodgers has not yet been at Leicester for three weeks, but suffice to say, he was not surprised when James Maddison opened the scoring at Burnley with an inch-perfect free kick.
With the manager hailing him as a "top-level player" before describing his ability at set pieces as "not by accident", the midfielder's efforts were all the more admirable as illness kept him up on Friday night. The 22-year-old also showed his adaptability at Turf Moor, excelling at finding space when cutting infield from his new role on the left.
    2 CHICHARITO THE GAME CHANGER
The joys of Javier Hernandez have been well documented over the years - he can score goals inside the penalty box and little else.
Some managers have become frustrated with his limitations, meaning he struggled to be a regular at Manchester United and now West Ham.
But the Mexico striker, more commonly known as Chicharito, showed his worth as the focal point of the attack, with his brace against Huddersfield changing the dynamic of the game for the hosts.
3 NEWCASTLE POUNCE IN STOPPAGE TIME
Rafael Benitez has moulded his Newcastle side into one of the most committed in the league and their never-say-die attitude was reinforced at Bournemouth when they scored a goal in added time in both halves.
Salomon Rondon's free-kick goal was the result of a counter-attack from a corner when many other teams would have been happy just to clear the ball at that stage.
Matt Ritchie then smashed in their second to equalise moments before the final whistle, a testament to the battling qualities that should keep the Magpies up.

"It's very difficult for players to explain to me the change. Very difficult for me to explain to you the change.
"If you are asking me about the top four, I would say it depends on whether you are speaking about the first half or the second.
"It will be hard to reach the top four now, but I would not say impossible.
"If we can play like we did in the first half for eight matches, we will give ourselves a chance."
His opposite number Marco Silva was, however, delighted his players had "showed our real selves" in the second half.
The Portuguese also accepted Everton found the initial stages tough going, but played down his role in his team later producing a performance of far greater intensity.
Richarlison opened the scoring in the 49th minute before Gylfi Sigurdsson tucked home the rebound in the 72nd minute after his penalty kick was saved.
The Toffees manager said: "What I said at the interval was simple. I said, in the second half, we just have to do everything different."
Asked about the statistic that Everton's last victory over a "Big Six" opponent came under Ronald Koeman against Manchester City, Silva claimed to be unaware.
He added: "I didn't know it had been so long, but all I want to say is that it cannot happen again. This is too big a club for that to happen."
Separately, Chelsea have lodged an official complaint with Uefa after forward Callum Hudson-Odoi was allegedly subjected to racist abuse late on during their Europa League last-16 victory at Dynamo Kiev last week.
He was apparently on the receiving end of monkey chants close to the final whistle and European football's governing body will be expected to launch a formal probe.
"We wholeheartedly condemn such abhorrent behaviour," a Chelsea spokesman said.

Football: PSG's Cavani doubtful for Man United game

PARIS (REUTERS) - Edinson Cavani is a major doubt for Paris St Germain's Champions League clash with Manchester United after picking up a thigh injury in his team's 1-0 Ligue 1 win over Girondins de Bordeaux on Saturday (Feb 9).
The Uruguay striker left the pitch on the stroke of halftime holding his thigh, soon after scoring with a penalty in the 42nd minute.
The French champions will be missing Brazil forward Neymar, who has been ruled out with a foot injury, for the last-16 first-leg clash at Old Trafford on Tuesday.
"I honestly don't know if Cavani will play. Yes it is worrying. We don't have another Edi like we don't have another Neymar," said PSG coach Thomas Tuchel.
Italian midfielder Marco Verratti is also doubtful due to injury.
"There are a lot of plans B. Without Ney, maybe without Marco, maybe without Edi. We have a plan D," German Tuchel said.
"It's super difficult. If we miss several players the challenge will be even bigger. But we will be ready on Tuesday."

For Manchester United, I do not know yet, I simply do not know. Cavani broke the deadlock with a penalty for his 17th goal in 16 league games this season after Thomas Meunier had been fouled in the area. "We will have to wait another night and day to have a clearer idea and get more tests done".

Young Lions stay in hunt for finals

Young Lions stay in hunt for finals

National Under-23 football coach Fandi Ahmad hailed his side's 1-1 draw with North Korea in their AFC Under-23 Championship qualifier yesterday as their best performance since he took charge of the team in October 2016.
Ikhsan Fandi scored a superb solo goal within a minute of kick-off, but North Korea equalised six minutes later at the MFF Football Centre in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia.
Singapore are third in Group G on two points from two matches, two points behind North Korea and Hong Kong, who beat hosts Mongolia 1-0 in the other match yesterday.
The Young Lions have a chance to top the group and qualify for the tournament finals for the first time if North Korea and Hong Kong play out a draw in their final game tomorrow and Fandi's boys beat Mongolia by more than one goal in a later game.
The 11 group winners and four best runners-up will qualify for the 2020 Under-23 Championship in Thailand in January. The top three finishers in the tournament will qualify for the 2020 Olympics.
Fandi told The Straits Times: "I've told the boys that miracles do happen, but we have to work to create them, too. All we can do now is work hard and enjoy the ride, and I'm happy to be on this journey with this bunch of players."
He was delighted by the effort and application his players showed against North Korea, who are ranked ninth out of 44 teams in the qualification tournament - Singapore are ranked 30th.
The 56-year-old's second son, Ikhsan, had put Singapore in front inside the first minute, latching on to a clever through pass by Hami Syahin and racing down the left flank before squeezing a shot inside the North Korean goalkeeper's near post.
Said Ikhsan, 19: "After Hami played that pass, I could hear everyone on the bench shouting 'take him on' so I just kept running at the defender towards goal, and shot.
"I didn't even see where the goal or goalkeeper was, my only thought was to get it on target."
But North Korea, who beat Mongolia last Friday, equalised in the seventh minute through a cool turn and finish by Park Kwang Hun.
But the 2016 Under-23 Championship quarter-finalists were unable to add a second goal as Fandi's side defended stoutly to deny their opponents clear-cut chances.
"North Korea are a very good team, but our boys battled till the very end, and we survived," said Fandi. "The tactical discipline was there, the boys coped very well.
"Now we look ahead to Mongolia and we will play to win. They are fighters but, tactically and technically, they are not stronger than us."
