Real fledglings face off against Ajax's talented young guns

AMSTERDAM • Real Madrid against Ajax would typically be a clash of stars against prodigies but, when they face each other in the first leg of the Champions League last-16 tie today, the difference will be harder to distinguish.
Ajax will parade their latest crop of young gems at the Johan Cruyff Arena, where Frenkie de Jong and Matthijs de Ligt will attempt to live up to already-swelling reputations while the likes of Donny van de Beek, Andre Onana and Kasper Dolberg could also enhance theirs.
For Real, Gareth Bale aside, the Galacticos are gone and are replaced by a handful of prospects trying to forge their way through.
Real coach Santiago Solari, whose predecessors Zinedine Zidane and Julen Lopetegui both used young players only when they had to, has made youth his first choice since being tasked with rejuvenating his team in November.
Vinicius Junior has had less playing time than Ajax's de Jong, with only six starts in LaLiga and one in the Champions League, but the Brazilian's impact has been arguably just as dramatic as the Dutchman.
Signed last summer for €45 million (S$69 million), Vinicius was supposed to spend his debut season settling in with the reserve side, a strategy adhered to perhaps too rigidly by Lopetegui.
Solari, in charge of Real Madrid B at the time, was the coach that received him, witnessing first-hand as the 18-year-old scored twice against Atletico B, curled in a free-kick against Unionistas and equalised against Celta Vigo B.
Vinicius was raw but, when Lopetegui was sacked, Solari had greater legitimacy to promote him.
He had faith too. Solari gave Vinicius 90 minutes in his first match in charge, more than Lopetegui had in all 14 of his.
Almost four months on, Vinicius has 22 appearances for the first team, the latest pair against Barcelona at the Nou Camp and Atletico Madrid at the Wanda Metropolitano. In both, he was Real's greatest threat, to the extent that even Bale's starting spot has been questioned.
"His adaptation has been very fast," Solari said. "He is 18 and he has adapted to a new country, a new culture, a different type of football. He has shown his talent, but we have to take care of him."
Vinicius is the poster boy of Solari's meritocracy, an approach that puts reputation far below humility and hard work.
Among the other fresh faces to come in are Spaniard Sergio Reguilon at left-back, Marcos Llorente in defensive midfield, and midfielder Dani Ceballos. Together, Vinicius, Reguilon, Llorente and Ceballos have played 64 games since Solari was appointed.
"They are the future of Real Madrid," Solari said. "Therefore, they have to be part of the present."

Klopp hails 'outstanding' Reds, turns attention to Barca

LONDON • All Liverpool can do now is win and hope.
The first part of their title duty was fulfilled in rampant and historic fashion as Huddersfield were routed 5-0 at Anfield on Friday.
Top of the Premier League with two to play, their longing for a favour now turns to Burnley.
Manchester City are acutely aware that Jurgen Klopp's team will not go quietly.
Indeed, the Liverpool manager loudly saluted his "outstanding" players as they stormed back to the summit on 91 points, two ahead of City before the champions travel to Burnley today.
Klopp was delighted with the way his players kept the pressure on, saying: "We are happy with the points we have and now we are focused on the next game.
"We have a mindset that works and we try to create problems for each opponent by working hard.
"It's obviously an outstanding group of players, who did well against a Huddersfield side who are much better than the result shows.
"They had proper counter-attacks, so we needed to be patient and we scored wonderful goals."
The Reds scored their fastest-ever Premier League goal through Naby Keita after just 15 seconds, before Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah both netted twice.
It was the perfect response to City's 2-0 win at Manchester United last Wednesday, which had temporarily lifted them into pole position.
Liverpool have now won their last 10 matches in all competitions, their best winning run since May 2006 when they reeled off 11 .
Klopp also sounded hopeful that his striker Roberto Firmino, who missed the match, will be fit to face Barcelona on Wednesday in the first leg of their Champions League semi-final at the Nou Camp.
The Brazilian, who has 16 goals and eight assists in all competitions this season, picked up a muscle injury in training on Thursday.
"The official diagnosis is he has a small tear in a small muscle, so apart from the word 'tear', everything else is positive," Klopp said.
"It is Bobby, so he might be ready for Wednesday, but we obviously don't know in this moment."

Where the EPL trophy will be

Manchester City will lift the Premier League trophy at the Amex Stadium if they beat Brighton today.
Should they drop points and Liverpool defeat Wolves, the Reds will be crowned champions and captain Jordan Henderson will lift a replica trophy at Anfield.
The two trophies, which are identical, exist for such a situation when the title race goes down to the final day.
The genuine trophy will be at the venue where the league leaders, who are favourites, are playing.
The Premier League will also prepare two sets of 40 winners medals each. One will be at the Amex and the other at Anfield.
After today, the champions will keep the trophy for a year while the replica will be used by the league for various promotional events.

Trust in players crucial: Nazri

Trust in players crucial: Nazri

There is no secret in motivating footballers.
Just one simple word - trust - captures Nazri Nasir's management philosophy. This is what he tried to instil during his short stint in charge of Singapore during March's AirMarine Cup in Malaysia.
The former national football captain said: "I fully believe in them.
"I told them when you're selected to be part of this team, it's because I trust you.
"When they're called on in the game, even if it's just five minutes, I trust that they will give their 100 per cent and, when they're given a chance, they will do well."
The Lions, their morale low after failing to qualify for the semi-finals of last November's AFF Suzuki Cup for the third time running, responded with some creditable performances at the friendly quadrangular tournament.
In Kuala Lumpur, they beat the hosts 1-0 and held Oman to a 1-1 draw before losing 5-4 on penalties.
Nazri, 48, who was recently appointed assistant to new national coach Tatsuma Yoshida, said: "They responded to me very well and I always try to win the players' trust, that's the most important thing and it showed during the AirMarine Cup.

MUCH TO LEARN
His (Nazri's) role will be very crucial as the middleman between players and coaches. He also has a lot of experience to impart and, with Yoshida's time in Japan with various clubs, we need to adapt as fast as we can.
HARISS HARUN, Singapore captain, on the partnership of new Lions coach Tatsuma Yoshida and assistant Nazri Nasir.

"I hope they can continue the momentum and that's where I come in also to motivate the players.
"It was a good experience to get to know the players better. Now, I can help him (Yoshida) get to know them as well by sharing their mentality, strengths and weaknesses.
"With his coaching ideas and me, as I can interact with players easily and understand them better, these will blend together to build a good chemistry in the team."
He and Yoshida face their first test as a partnership in the coming days. The Republic, ranked 160th, face the Solomon Islands (world No. 139) and Myanmar (140) on Saturday and next Tuesday.
The friendlies at the National Stadium were arranged to help Singapore gain crucial Fifa ranking points for a potentially better draw in July for the World Cup qualifiers.
Singapore captain Hariss Harun said Nazri, who skippered the Lions to victory at the 1998 AFF Championship, is an important presence in the national set-up.
Hariss noted: "His role will be very crucial as the middleman between players and coaches.
"He also has a lot of experience to impart and, with Yoshida's time in Japan with various clubs (Kashiwa Reysol, Albirex Niigata and Ventforet Kofu), we need to adapt as fast as we can.
"Our results at the AirMarine Cup gave us a lot of confidence so we just have to try to continue that momentum. We have a new coach too so the boys are eager to show what we have.
"I hope this will translate to a good performance in the coming games."
After Nazri retired in 2008, he joined his former club Tampines Rovers as general manager and was later an assistant coach for the now-defunct LionsXII and Young Lions.
He said: "Yoshida brings different ideas and playing styles.
"He's very detailed and requires high intensity.
"He wants to bring Singapore to a higher level. With his guidance and my local experience, I'm sure we can help the team improve. "

Why Trust Is Critical to Team Success Trust is "hot." Today, more than ever, it's increasingly recognized as an essential asset to break down silos, foster collaboration, deepen teamwork, drive engagement, and manage the never-ending process of change. Football: Barca primed for gruelling 'Clasico' Cup tie

BARCELONA (REUTERS) - Barcelona coach Ernesto Valverde has said his side's Copa del Rey semi-final clashes with Real Madrid will further exhaust his players at a pivotal moment in the season but will also provide a great spectacle for fans.
Thirty-times winners Barcelona, who have won the last four editions of the Copa del Rey, will host Real in the first leg on Feb 6, with the second leg on Feb 27 or Feb 28 at the Santiago Bernabeu.
Real Betis will host Valencia in the first leg of the other semi on Feb 7 and visit Mestalla in the second. The final takes place in Seville on May 25.
Friday's draw means Spain's two biggest clubs will play each other three times in four weeks and twice within four days, as Real host Barca in La Liga on March 2, after the second leg at the Santiago Bernabeu.
Barca's two visits to the home of their eternal rivals come sandwiched between both legs of their Champions League last 16 tie with Olympique Lyonnais, further clogging a gruelling schedule as they also bid to successfully defend their La Liga crown.
"This makes the season even more exciting, two intense games that will take a toll on us physically but which will be very attractive for the fans and for us," Valverde told a news conference ahead of Saturday's La Liga game against Valencia.
"Our schedule is very tough, if you play permanently and don't get knocked out of competitions the level of tiredness is brutal. We have to think long term and short-term, because we don't want to slip up in the league.
Barca thrashed Real Madrid 5-1 in the last "Clasico" in October and lead their rivals by 10 points in the standings, although Santiago Solari's side are on enjoying a rival, winning five of their last six games in all competitions and scoring 15 goals.
"They were doing badly in the league but now Madrid are much better and it will be a difficult tie," added Valverde, whose side have a five-point lead over nearest challengers Atletico Madrid at the top of La Liga.
"It will be a great tie, two massive games in a moment in which both teams will be fighting for La Liga and starting again in the Champions League."
Barca overcame a 2-0 deficit from their quarter-final first leg against Sevilla, thrashing the Andalusians 6-1 in the return leg to progress 6-3 on aggregate.
Real Madrid had a more comfortable path to the last four, beating Girona 4-2 at home and winning 3-1 away for a 7-3 aggregate win.

A painful lesson for sloppy Spurs

A painful lesson for sloppy Spurs

LONDON • Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino said he was living the dream in the build-up to their Champions League semi-final against Ajax, but it must have felt like a nightmare at times against the classy Dutch side on Tuesday.
Borrowing a line from the Disney cartoon hero Buzz Lightyear when he urged his players to go "to infinity and beyond", Spurs were instead sent crashing down to earth after being comprehensively outplayed in the first 30 minutes.
They were fortunate to only concede a 15th-minute Donny van de Beek goal that gave the visitors a precious 1-0 away win.
Pochettino took his share of the blame for a "sloppy" display after admitting he used the wrong tactics.
Ajax dominated the first half until he completely changed his game plan by switching from a 3-5-2 formation to a 4-4-2 system.
Tactics aside, the Spurs boss was also angry with the lethargic way his players started the club's first European Cup semi-final in 57 years.
"The attitude was there, but we didn't find a way to play," he said.
"We didn't show the energy that we wanted to show. They showed more energy than us. The way we conceded the goal was painful.
"Our approach to the game was not good. I am the manager so I have responsibility. I can accept it was a mistake the shape we used. But our lack of energy from the beginning made our game difficult."
With Harry Kane and Son Heung-min unavailable through injury and suspension respectively, Spurs were blunt in attack and they also lacked creativity in midfield.
Aided by the introduction of Moussa Sissoko for the injured Jan Vertonghen just after the half-hour mark, Tottenham regained a measure of control but could not hurt Ajax with their long-ball barrage.

POSITIVE THINKING
We are alive. It's only 1-0 down. We need to believe we can go there and win the game.
MAURICIO POCHETTINO, Tottenham manager, remains positive that his side can overturn the 1-0 first-leg deficit and reach the Champions League final.

Vertonghen, one of three centre-backs deployed by Pochettino, had to be substituted after a collision with teammate Toby Alderweireld left him with a bloody nose.
Pochettino was also asked to clarify the situation in which Vertonghen needed lengthy treatment and was given the all-clear by Spurs medics to continue playing, before the clearly-groggy Belgian was then helped off the field as it became clear he could not continue.
Spurs said he had passed all the on-field concussion tests, as per protocol - in other words, he had not suffered a concussion.
"The rules and the protocol were there and the medical staff followed them," Pochettino said.
"In the next action, we had to take him out. The most important thing is the health of the player. I only need to listen and hear what they say and take a decision. I will never debate their decision."
Ajax, who were sharper in mind and body, seized a deserved lead when Frenkie de Jong, David Neres, Lasse Schone, Hakim Ziyech and van de Beek tore Spurs apart.
Found by Neres, Schone instantly worked the ball across to Ziyech, who placed the ball between Vertonghen and Danny Rose for van de Beek.
A master at movement between the lines, van de Beek timed his run to perfection and demonstrated a masterclass in composure and technique with his finish.
Despite an improved second-half display, Spurs managed only one effort on target.
But Pochettino remains hopeful that his side can turn things around.
"We pushed them to play deeper (in the second half). We started to press in the way we wanted to press. The second half has given us the hope for the second leg," he said. "We are alive. It's only 1-0 down. We need to believe we can go there and win the game."

LONDON • Michail Antonio has been a familiar foe for Tottenham.
Back in the 2015-16 season, when Spurs were pushing for the Premier League title, it was Antonio who derailed them with the only goal of a 1-0 West Ham win at Upton Park.
Yesterday, the forward struck the first goal by a visiting player to Spurs' new stadium and it was one that stood to damage their hopes of a top-four finish.
Antonio's reward was no more than what West Ham deserved and the 1-0 win served to end the side's woeful recent away run - they had arrived on the back of one point from an available 24.
Spurs could have been forgiven for having one eye on Tuesday's Champions League semi-final first-leg against Ajax but it was alarming to see how flat and laboured they were in the second half.
They looked out on their feet in the closing stages, when West Ham could easily have added to their 67th-minute lead, and Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino admitted afterwards that his team were suffering from fatigue.
"We were tired. We knew that it was going to be tough because it was a derby," he said.

"We knew that to compete in the Premier League top four is very tough. First half we deserved it, second half they deserved it.
"Second half they were better. They had more energy than us and we conceded a lot of space for them to run into. We didn't find a way to manage the ball properly.
"But the effort my players are doing is amazing. I still feel proud of them. Sometimes we need to admit it's tough, we didn't score and now we have to move on."
Spurs had won all four matches at their new £1 billion (S$1.76 billion) stadium, and have yet to concede a goal before yesterday. But it was finally the day when their perfect record ended.
More significantly, the loss put a dent in their Champions League qualification hopes.
Tottenham now hold a slim three-point lead over fourth-placed Chelsea (67) and are four points ahead of fifth-placed Arsenal, with both teams in action today.
Manchester United, further back in sixth and six points behind Spurs, host Chelsea as all three teams know they must now take advantage of Spurs' slip.
Pochettino had insisted Tottenham's first European semi-final since the 1984 Uefa Cup was less significant than their top-four challenge. But his team selection told a different story.
The Argentinian rested Kieran Trippier, Victor Wanyama and Fernando Llorente, but his gamble backfired.
Spurs dominated the first half and could have been ahead had Son Heung-min and Christian Eriksen converted their chances.
They were then made to pay as West Ham took the lead after half-time when Antonio lashed past goalkeeper Hugo Lloris following a cross from Marko Arnautovic.
"For us to come here and get the first win is a great achievement," said a beaming Antonio, who did not know that he was the first away player to score at the new stadium.
"I wasn't aware but that's another little mark in history, and I love it."

Football: West Ham pass evidence to police on racist abuse of Liverpool's Salah during EPL game

LONDON (REUTERS) - West Ham have handed evidence to the police after completing an investigation into racist abuse shouted at Liverpool forward Mohamed Salah during their English Premier League match at the London Stadium on Monday (Feb 4).
A video emerged on social media in which audible racial slurs were directed at the 26-year-old Egypt international as he was taking a corner. The match finished in a 1-1 draw.
The user who posted the video on Twitter said: "I went to watch West Ham vs Liverpool and I was disgusted by what I was hearing. People like this deserve no place in our society let alone football matches."
The Metropolitan Police had told Reuters in an e-mail that officers were in the process of reviewing the footage and West Ham said in a statement on Thursday (Feb 7) that they had given all of their evidence to the police.
"After a thorough and immediate investigation following the abhorrent racist abuse aimed at Liverpool striker Mohamed Salah on Monday night, West Ham United can confirm that it has handed evidence to the Metropolitan Police," it said.
"The club is unequivocal in its stance - such abuse will not be tolerated. There is no place or excuse for this kind of behaviour."
Salah was last year named PFA Player of the Year and the Football Writers' Association's Footballer of the Year after he scored 44 goals for Liverpool in all competitions last season.

Aubameyang sets sights on Europa title

LONDON • Arsenal were able to count on a team of superheroes as they overturned a two-goal deficit to reach the quarter-finals of the Europa League, but their next opponents are unlikely to allow them the same luxury of drawing on their powers of recovery.
They were yesterday paired with Napoli in the pick of the ties following the draw, with Unai Emery's team playing at the Emirates in the first leg on April 11 before the return leg in Italy a week later.
The winners of that tie will go on to a semi-final clash against the victors of the all-Spanish meeting between LaLiga teams Valencia and Villarreal. Peter Lim-owned Valencia were on their way out before Goncalo Guedes struck a dramatic stoppage-time equaliser against Krasnodar on Thursday to progress 3-2 on aggregate.
Chelsea, Europa League winners in 2013, will fancy their chances of advancing against Czech side Slavia Prague after smashing Dynamo Kiev 5-0 for an 8-0 aggregate win, while Eintracht Frankfurt will next take on Portuguese outfit Benfica.
While Emery's men have arguably a harder path to the May 29 final in Baku, with Napoli currently second in Serie A, the Spaniard feels pressure brings out the best in his team as "the difficult moments give us our best performance".
Speaking after the 3-0 second-leg win over Rennes during which Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang celebrated his brace with a mask from the film Black Panther, he said: "I'm excited (about) this competition.
"It's exciting not only for the possibility to go to the Champions League, but also because it's a title.
"Today, Inter (Milan), Sevilla are out, a big surprise. The last teams, they're all very important, and it's going to be very difficult. We're going to think the same before every match. The next match is the most important for us."
After Arsenal became only the second Europa League side to come back from 3-1 down after Fulham in 2010, Aubameyang tweeted his delight at the draw, claiming he was looking forward to meeting his friends, Napoli defenders Kevin Malcuit and Faouzi Ghoulam.
He also told reporters the mask "represented him", adding: "In Gabon, we call the national team the Panthers."

Fandis are a happy family

Fandis are a happy family

Fandi Ahmad was a proud coach and father, after watching his Singapore Under-22 side deliver a composed 3-0 Merlion Cup win over the Philippines last night with his two sons among the goalscorers.
The semi-final win sends the Young Lions into tomorrow's final against Thailand, who beat Indonesia 2-1 earlier at the Jalan Besar Stadium yesterday.
"They both just came back and it's good that they helped the team," said Fandi, 57, of his sons, who are both already full internationals. They're team players."
"We had some restrictions so we couldn't play Ikhsan. But when he came in he made a lot of difference, (creating) openings for others.
"I'm very happy for Irfan and Ikhsan, this shows they are at a good level. Hopefully, they can spur the other boys to work harder as well."
Given striker Ikhsan, 20, had arrived from Norway on Tuesday and was jet-lagged, it was no surprise that Fandi opted to bench his younger son.
Despite the absence of Ikhsan, who has netted four goals in 11 games for Norwegian second-tier club Raufoss this season, the Republic took the lead in the first half through Amiruldin Asraf.
The Home United forward stole possession from defender Pete Forrosuelo in the penalty area and easily scored past goalkeeper Michael Asong in the 26th minute.
The hosts looked threatening on set pieces and captain Irfan, 21, was an obvious danger with his 1.88m frame. The centre-back almost scored in the 40th minute but his downward header hit the upright.
Fandi's eldest son made no mistake, though, in the 62nd minute and guided his header past Asong to double Singapore's lead.
Six minutes later, Ikhsan, a half-time substitute, completed a swift counter-attack with a simple tap-in after midfielder Daniel Goh crossed from the right.
Ikhsan was taken off in the 79th minute to preserve him for the Thais, who will pose a stiffer challenge than the Filipinos.
Fandi said: "We are very happy with the results and we get to the final. The beginning stages, we didn't play to our plan and, some of the boys, you could see the jitters in them, especially the younger ones.
"I'm very happy that after the first 20 minutes we picked up our game and started playing football and creating chances from the set pieces, which are our strength.
"But we need to improve on our decision-making and, when we're under pressure, we tend to clear the ball unnecessarily. We should be more composed with the ball.
"Defensively we're still not that tight because we don't really train together, so that needs work."
Man of the Match Irfan added that their time in Mongolia, where Singapore had encouraging performances at the 2020 AFC U-23 Championship qualifiers in March, helped them improve.
"Our players are more experienced now after coming back from Mongolia. I think we fought even harder and we managed to keep cool and play football."

Football: 'It's cruel', says miserable Guardiola as City crash out

MANCHESTER, United Kingdom (AFP) - Pep Guardiola bemoaned VAR's failure to rule out Fernando Llorente's decisive goal for Tottenham as Manchester City's quadruple bid was shattered by a "cruel" Champions League quarter-final exit on Wednesday (April 17).
Guardiola's side were closing in on a place in the semi-finals after staging a thrilling comeback to lead 4-2 in the second leg at the Etihad Stadium.
But Tottenham striker Llorente bundled home in the 73rd minute via a combination of his arm and hip, with VAR allowing the goal on review despite City's appeals for handball.
Guardiola could be seen gesturing for handball while the VAR check was made, but his protest was in vain.
Adding to the City manager's frustration, Raheem Sterling appeared to have scored what would have been the winner in the final seconds of stoppage-time, only for the goal to be ruled out by VAR for offside against Sergio Aguero.
"I support VAR but maybe from one angle Fernando Llorente's goal is handball, maybe from the referee's angle it is not," Guardiola said.
"I watched the action and the people from above decided it (City's disallowed goal) was offside.
"In the moment we celebrated and we were so close to the semi-finals.
"It is cruel but it is what it is and we have to accept it."
Despite the painful end to City's attempt to win all four major trophies this season, Guardiola insisted he was proud of the effort put in by his team and their supporters.

"We missed a penalty in the first leg but I am so proud of the players and the fans," he said.
"I have never heard noise like that since I have been in Manchester, but football is unpredictable."

'UNBELIEVABLE'

City now have to focus on retaining the title, with Tottenham their next opponents in the Premier League on Saturday.
"We have a lot of games from the league and FA Cup final. Today is tough and tomorrow will be tough too but the day after we will be ready," Guardiola said.
Mauricio Pochettino's men will return to Manchester this weekend on a high after one of the greatest results in the club's history.
Tottenham's only other semi-final appearance in Europe's elite club competition came in its previous guise as the European Cup in 1961-62.
Their semi-final date with Ajax will be Tottenham's first European semi-final since the 1984 UEFA Cup.
It is a personal triumph for Pochettino, who hasn't signed a single player in the last two transfer windows, yet managed to knock out one of the richest clubs in the world.
Saluting his side, who went through without injured striker Harry Kane following his injury in the first leg, Pochettino said: "It was unbelievable - the way it finished. I am so happy, so proud.
"My players are heroes to be here. I am so happy for them, so happy for the fans."
Admitting he was bewildered by the astonishing finale with Sterling's disallowed goal, Pochettino, who ended the night dancing on the pitch with his jacket off, added: "In a moment many things happened in your head, the disappointment was massive but they changed the decision.
"That is why we love football. Today we showed great character and great personality it was an unbelievable game."

Pep Guardiola claimed he still doesn't believe Manchester City can win the quadruple after his side reached the FA Cup final with a 1-0 win over Brighton on Saturday. Ronaldo's rape lawsuit reportedly dropped

Ronaldo's rape lawsuit reportedly dropped
LOS ANGELES • A rape lawsuit against Juventus star Cristiano Ronaldo in the United States - that made headlines last year and sent the club's shares down 15 per cent - has been quietly dropped.
A notice of voluntary dismissal was filed last month in Nevada state court in Las Vegas. The filing did not say whether the accuser had reached a settlement with the Portuguese football player.
The New York Times reported in March that Juventus, the Italian Serie A champions, would not participate in the International Champions Cup in the US this summer to avoid the risk that Ronaldo would be detained by authorities as part of a rape investigation.
The 34-year-old publicly denied the allegations and never filed a response to the lawsuit.
Kathryn Mayorga filed a complaint on Sept 27, alleging that she was sexually assaulted by Ronaldo in 2009 in his penthouse suite at a Las Vegas hotel.
Mayorga said in the complaint that while she agreed to a settlement with Ronaldo after the alleged assault, she was experiencing severe emotional trauma at the time and was not competent to participate in the mediation.
Leslie Stovall, a lawyer for Mayorga, and Peter Christiansen, a lawyer for Ronaldo, did not immediately respond to requests for comment on the dismissal.
A five-time winner of football's most prestigious award, the Ballon d'Or, Ronaldo is also the sport's most popular player on social media. His marketing potential supercharged Juventus, with the stock price doubling in the months after the Turin-based team signed him from Spain's Real Madrid on July 10.
Juventus is controlled by Italy's Agnelli family, the biggest investors in carmaker Fiat Chrysler Automobiles.
Following the lawsuit last year, Las Vegas police reopened an investigation of the rape allegations.
The New York Times reported in January that law enforcement officials had requested a sample of the player's DNA from Italian authorities.
Las Vegas police officials did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the status of the investigation.

Aaron Kok has been to Anfield 16 times but the 17th time might be the most memorable of them all.
Or not.
The travel agency owner, who organises trips to Liverpool's home ground regularly, is bringing 45 other fellow fans for tomorrow's final game of the season against Wolves.
The group will join thousands of supporters on Merseyside hoping to will Liverpool to their first English top-flight title since 1990. They will also play Tottenham in the Champions League final on June 1.
Kok, who leaves Singapore today, said: "I have a few friends who are already there and they've said there's a very festive mood there because everyone has been buzzing from the Champions League win.
"It's a dream for every fan to visit Anfield, to be able to go to the ground and watch the team they support. It will be a crazy day and everyone will be enjoying themselves."
But the 42-year-old admitted that the title might be out of Liverpool's hands. He said: "As long as we try our best, if Manchester City win (against Brighton) it's not within our control. We've already done brilliantly this season."
Fellow Reds fan and estate planner S. Kavindran, 36, is also holding on to that dream.
"One thing about Liverpool, that's very different from other football clubs, is that the whole Anfield vibe is not just that of a football ground; it's a holy ground," he said.

HISTORY WON'T BE MADE
I just can't see Man City not winning. People will say miracles happen, Brighton have a chance. But they're not in the same class as the players who did what they did this week.
PAUL MERSON, former Arsenal midfielder and pundit, on the impossible task facing Brighton to replicate the comeback feats by Liverpool and Tottenham in the Champions League.

HISTORY REMEMBERS ONLY WINNERS
It's all about winning. No one is going to say, 'Do you remember when we finished in the Champions League final and runners-up in the league?'. Show me your medal.
TIM SHERWOOD, who lifted the Premier League trophy as Blackburn Rovers' captain.

"In the last few games, we've been scoring late to win so I'm hopeful we'll be able to pull it off again.
"Even if we fall short, we have to give it to the team. The way that they played the whole season, none of the other teams gave City a fight like we did."
City fans here are largely optimistic that they will win at 17th-placed Brighton to secure back-to-back league titles.
Civil servant and Manchester City Singapore Supporters committee member Haizam Shah, 34, noted Brighton's improved form, 1-1 draws against Newcastle and Arsenal, but believes that the Citizens will not falter at the final hurdle.
He said: "Brighton are already safe from relegation, they have nothing to play for.
"But Liverpool are playing Wolves, who are doing quite well.
"I won't say Brighton are pushovers, but I'm confident in my team, that's for sure."
Jess Chen, who is self-employed, has been supporting the Citizens since 1995.
The 37-year-old said: "It's unbelievable seeing them transform from a team fighting relegation to where we are today. We're enjoying every moment and not taking anything for granted.
"Even if we don't win, we can't really blame anyone because the team have surpassed all expectations. They got maximum points since their last defeat (by Newcastle in January), so you really can't ask for more.
"They've had several challenging tests in the final period in terms of quality of opponents and pressure from Liverpool.
"The toughest part is already past them, so now it's just about crossing the line and finishing strong.''

Gwinn gets Germany's vital goal

PARIS • Midfielder Giulia Gwinn scored the only goal yesterday as Germany opened their Women's World Cup campaign with a 1-0 win over China in Group B.
On a sunny but breezy early summer's day perfect for football, in front of a noisy crowd of 15,283 in Rennes, Germany - twice winners of this competition - dominated possession and territory.
Yet, in a game of slick passing mixed with robust challenges, they twice survived narrow escapes.
The 19-year-old Gwinn fired in from the edge of the box in the 66th minute to break stiff Chinese resistance and seal the victory.
But China had almost stunned the favourites against the run of play in the first half when Yang Li was sent through after a German error, but her shot was cleared when she looked certain to score.
Carolin Simon hit the woodwork with a cross minutes later, but Germany's early dominance faded as the Chinese gained in confidence.
China then earned another golden chance from a quick break, hitting the post in the 44th minute before Germany goalkeeper Almuth Schult came to the rescue.
With the win, Germany are now unbeaten in their last 13 matches, the longest run of any team taking part in the tournament in France.
"That was hard work. We started well but the goal didn't come. We were more stable after the break and we got the reward for our efforts in the end," said Germany coach Martina Voss-Tecklenburg.
In Friday's opener, France coach Corinne Diacre said her side had taken their first step towards Cup success but warned they must stay grounded after they started with a 4-0 victory over South Korea.
Les Bleues were rarely troubled by a limited side and took only nine minutes for forward Eugenie Le Sommer to fire the ball into the roof of the net from close range.
Wendie Renard doubled the tally with a downward header in the 35th minute, and the towering defender added another with her head on the stroke of half-time.
France's intensity dropped after the break until five minutes from the final whistle, when captain Amandine Henry curled a superb shot into the far corner.
"We worked a lot, they suffered a lot during the preparation period. We won tonight but it's just the first step," Diacre told a news conference at the Parc des Princes.
"We need six more (steps) to reach our goal, we must keep our feet on the ground, keep working.
"We started well and we made it easy for ourselves. It was important to score a second goal before the break, and we did even better."

Football: Messi and Suarez rescue Barca in 4-4 draw at Villarreal

VILA-REAL (REUTERS) - Barcelona's Lionel Messi came off the bench to help the Liga leaders battle back from 4-2 down in stoppage time to snatch a remarkable 4-4 draw at struggling Villarreal on Tuesday (April 2).
The Catalans avoided a first league loss since November with a last-gasp Luis Suarez strike after captain and top scorer Messi gave them hope with a deadly free kick in the 90th minute.
The draw resulted in Barca's lead over nearest challengers Atletico Madrid, who had earlier won 2-0 at home to lowly Girona, being trimmed to eight points ahead of Saturday's top-of-the-table showdown at the Nou Camp.
Even without Messi, Gerard Pique and Ivan Rakitic in their starting lineup, the visitors still strolled into the lead through a Philippe Coutinho goal in the 12th minute, which Brazilian forward Malcom soon doubled with a header.
But Villarreal, who began the game hovering one point above the relegation zone, hauled themselves into contention with a strike from 19-year-old Samuel Chukwueze midway through the first half.
Cameroon striker Karl Toko Ekambi took advantage of slack positioning from Barca goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen to equalise soon after the interval and Vicente Iborra completed the home side's remarkable revival just after the hour mark.
Messi was called from the bench to rescue the champions but instead Villarreal increased their lead with a strike from their substitute Carlos Bacca.
Alvaro Gonzalez was then dismissed for Villarreal for a second booking with four minutes remaining, paving the way for Messi and Suarez to strike for Barca and produce a remarkable finish to an enthralling contest.

Football: Spurs beaten for first time in new stadium, Southampton stay up

LONDON (REUTERS) - A goal by Michail Antonio ensured West Ham United became the first visiting team to win at Tottenham Hotspur's new stadium as Mauricio Pochettino's third-placed side missed the chance to effectively secure a Premier League top-four place on Saturday (April 27).
The 1-0 defeat further confused the position behind soaraway frontrunners Liverpool and Manchester City, neither of whom played on Saturday, with Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester United also chasing the final two Champions League spots.
At the bottom, Southampton guaranteed their survival with a thrilling 3-3 home draw against neighbours Bournemouth. Cardiff City's 1-0 defeat at Fulham left them four points from the safety zone after 17th-placed Brighton & Hove Albion drew 1-1 with Newcastle United in the day's late kickoff.
Spurs, who had not even conceded a goal in their first four games back home, were looking for a boost ahead of their Champions League semi-final against Ajax Amsterdam. However, they failed to impress against a West Ham side who had taken just one point from their previous eight away league games.
Pochettino said the best way to now approach Tuesday - and one of the most important games in the club's history - was simply to forget about Saturday's setback.
"We have to forget about it, move on and think about Tuesday," he said.
Antonio's goal owed much to Marko Arnautovic whose dinked through ball allowed his partner a fraction of space to take the ball down on his chest and strike it firmly past Hugo Lloris. The defeat was Spurs' first in the league at their home ground since May 2016 when Southampton were the winners.

Saints striker Shane Long's rich vein of form continued with his fourth goal in five games after 12 minutes at St Mary's. But after the Irishman missed an even easier chance for his second, Bournemouth hit back with goals from Dan Gosling and Callum Wilson.
An excellent strike from James Ward-Prowse and a bullet header from substitute Matt Targett put Southampton back in front before Wilson equalised, although the point ensured the Saints will go marching on in the top flight next season.

CARDIFF IN TROUBLE

A stunning strike from Ryan Babel gave already relegated Fulham their third successive Premier League win - equalling their best - and narrowed Cardiff's escape options. The visitors mounted a storming finish, with Bobby Reid hitting the bar, but remain cut adrift with two games left.
Saturday's game was interrupted by a worrying seven-minute stoppage when home defender Denis Odoi was accidentally kicked in the head by team mate Maxine Le Marchand.
Odoi required oxygen to revive him and was eventually carried off on a stretcher but manager Scott Parker later said the Belgian was fine.
"Denis is okay, I have just seen him," Parker said. "It was a big head injury; he was out of it for a few seconds which was concerning but he is fine and will be okay."
Brighton then plunged Cardiff deeper into the relegation mire after Pascal Gross scored their first goal in eight games in all competitions to cancel out Ayoze Perez's opener. Cardiff need to win both of their remaining games to have a chance of survival.
Wolves manager Nuno Espirito Santo said revenge was not in his thinking ahead of their rematch with their FA Cup semi-final conquerors Watford. He will nevertheless be delighted by the 2-1 win courtesy of strikes from prolific scorers Raul Jimenez and Diogo Jota.
The win moved seventh-placed Wolves four points clear of Everton, who drew 0-0 at Crystal Palace, and Watford.
