Football: Solskjaer unimpressed as 'sloppy' United avoid banana skin

MANCHESTER, England (REUTERS) - Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer labelled his team "sloppy" after they laboured to a 2-1 Premier League win over Watford at Old Trafford on Saturday (March 30).
Solskjaer's first game since being named manager on a permanent basis was a disappointing one with only the goals, in each half, from Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial providing any satisfaction for the Norwegian.
"The first 20 minutes we started so slow and sloppy and you could see we have had players out with injuries in the international break and not been able to train them," said Solskjaer.
"It is one of them. The first games after international breaks that you know could be a potential banana skin. They deserved to take the lead. After we scored, with a great goal, the rest of the first half we played some great counter- attacking stuff," he said.
"Second half we started sloppier again but at 2-0 I thought we were in control but then they scored and anything could happen then," he added.
Solskjaer praised central defenders Phil Jones and Chris Smalling's displays but admitted the overall performance barely merited a win.
"It was more a draw, performance-wise. We'll take the three points. Some of the players who went away maybe played too much," he said.

The Norwegian said his team had been unable to bring Paul Pogba into the game enough with the Frenchman having a below-par match.
"Paul is important for us and we couldn't keep the ball today. We had 50-50 possession at home, you are a bit disappointed with that.
"Paul has been away, played two games with France. A bit deeper (role) for them so that is something we may have to think about to get him more involved.
"Paul can do both, he can attack and defend. I thought Rashy (Rashford) was fantastic, he gave us the energy the others lacked, the two centre-backs and Luke Shaw were excellent as well," he said.

One step at a time for Bale as Wales gear up for Slovakia
WREXHAM • Wales manager Ryan Giggs has defended his decision to leave Gareth Bale out of the team who beat Trinidad and Tobago 1-0 in a friendly on Wednesday, saying that he is trying to keep the forward fresh for important matches ahead.
The Welsh needed a stoppage-time goal from Liverpool teenager Ben Woodburn to seal the win in Wrexham and save Giggs' blushes.
Bale was one of several players, including Aaron Ramsey and David Brooks, omitted just days before the team begin their Euro 2020 qualifying campaign against Slovakia in Cardiff on Sunday.
"Of course it's disappointing for the fans," Giggs said on the BBC.
"They want to see the likes of Gareth. But it's my job to make sure we are ready for Sunday.
"Gareth got his first 90 minutes in three months (for Real Madrid last weekend), so it was just too much of a risk with Sunday in mind.
"I want to take the pressure off him at the same time, so if he's not available we're not just reliant on one player."
Trinidad and Tobago are ranked 93rd in the world - 74 places lower than Wales - yet it seemed they might be rewarded with a creditable draw at a Racecourse Ground where their manager Dennis Lawrence played for Wrexham.
The last match between the two countries had seen Bale become Wales' youngest player then, at 16 years and 315 days, in a win over Trinidad in a 2006 friendly.
Wales' victory meant that Giggs, who was appointed 14 months ago, has clinched only his fourth win to go with five defeats and a draw.
The Manchester United legend had previously said that he is determined to win over his doubters and is aware that he will be judged on the results from the Euro 2020 qualifying matches.

Napoli goalkeeper David Ospina out of hospital after head injury scare

MILAN (AFP) - Napoli goalkeeper David Ospina has been discharged from hospital and is recovering from his frightening collapse after a knock to the head at the weekend, the Serie A club announced on Monday (March 18).
The 30-year-old, who is on loan from Arsenal, will miss Colombia's international friendlies against Japan on March 22 and South Korea four days later after suddenly falling to the ground 41 minutes after receiving treatment following his collision with Ignacio Pussetto during Sunday's 4-2 win over Udinese.
"David Ospina was discharged this afternoon from the Pineta Grande Clinic where he had been admitted last night for a series of checks," Napoli wrote in a statement.
"Checks have ruled out any problem. The player was advised to take a few days of rest and will not respond to his call-up for the national team." Ospina's wife Jesica Sterling said on Instagram that Ospina "was much better" at home, "waiting for the shock to completely subside".
Napoli, meanwhile, are reported to have ordered an investigation into decisions taken by medics, who allowed Ospina to continue playing, and transferred him initially to the nearby San Paolo hospital where there is no neurosurgery department.
Ospina suffered "a hypotensive crisis resulting from a head injury," Napoli had said on Sunday, which is a sudden fall in blood pressure which can cause dizziness and fainting.
Ospina played for six years with French club Nice before joining Arsenal in 2014. He arrived at Napoli last August on a one-year loan with an option to buy.

He has played 14 league games for Serie A runners-up Napoli including Sunday's 4-2 win over Udinese.

Geylang International 1
Hougang United's dead-eye over the dead-ball, Zulfahmi Arifin, proved the difference in the 4-1 romp over Geylang International at the Jalan Besar Stadium yesterday that lifted the Cheetahs to second in the Singapore Premier League.
The Hougang skipper provided assists for Jordan Vestering (7th minute) and Afiq Yunos (67th), from a corner kick and a free kick respectively, with Amir Zalani (55th) and Fazrul Nawaz (83rd) scoring the home side's other goals.
A header by Dutch midfielder Barry Maguire in the 49th minute had given Geylang hope for a fightback, but proved mere consolation.
Geylang coach Noor Ali said the difference in quality between the two sides was telling - only four in his matchday squad have earned Singapore caps, compared to half of Hougang's 18-man team.
"We had our chances but, at the end of the day, quality is what counts," said the 43-year-old.
"They don't pay Zulfahmi (well) for no reason, and his delivery of the ball was something we found very hard to contain."
Zulfahmi, 27, recently scored his first international goal for Singapore, curling home a fine free kick from 25m in the 1-1 draw with Oman on March 23.

They don't pay Zulfahmi (well) for no reason, and his delivery of the ball was something we found very hard to contain.
NOOR ALI, Geylang International coach, on Zulfahmi Arifin's influence.

Aside from his pinpoint deliveries yesterday, he was also a calming influence on the Hougang backline, playing in the centre of a five-man defence, before moving into a midfield role in the second half.
Hougang coach Clement Teo, however, felt his skipper did not play at his best.
"I've known Zul since he was 16 and this boy has got tremendous talent," he said. "But there were phases of the game where he should have done better."
Despite seeing his team leapfrog Tampines Rovers into second place before the Stags play Balestier Khalsa today, Teo believes his charges still have much room for improvement.
He said: "Credit to the players, they have shown they are able to play and fight for each other.
"But it's only the sixth game and the team have got a lot of potential. We need to take it one game at a time. We can't think that now we're already (second), we're doing good enough."

Football: Pilot in Emiliano Sala tragedy still missing, family launch fundraising campaign to find him

LONDON (AFP) - The family of the pilot of the small plane that crashed over the English Channel while flying Argentine footballer Emiliano Sala to Britain has launched a fundraising campaign to find his remains.
British rescuers on Thursday (Feb 7) formally identified the one body pulled from the submerged wreckage as that of the 28-year-old striker.
But strong currents and winter weather forced them to call off the search before locating 59-year-old pilot David Ibbotson - the only other person on the Piper Malibu propeller aircraft.
"As a family we are relying on the kindness of the good hearted people to help us raise the much needed funds to help us find our beloved Dad, Husband and Son," the GoFundMe page said. "To be told the search has now been called off for the foreseeable future has only made this tragic time more difficult."
The campaign had raised around £25,000 (S$44,000) by Saturday (Feb 9) morning - a fraction of its stated goal of £300,000.
The plane carrying Sala from the French city of Nantes to his new English Premier League club Cardiff City disappeared near the British island of Guernsey on Jan 21.
The Welsh club hoped Sala would help them avoid relegation from the world's most lucrative league this season after signing him from Nantes for a club record fee of £15 million.

The city of 335,000 has been in mourning for more than two weeks. Fans transformed the grounds around the stadium on Friday into a sea of bouquets and yellow-and-blue team scarves and jerseys in tribute to their fallen star, who had yet to play a game for them.
Cardiff City owner Vincent Tan said on Friday that the club have offered to pay to take Sala "back to rest" in his hometown of Progreso in rural Argentina.
"We've offered to arrange to take Emiliano back to rest with his family in Argentina," Tan told talkSPORT radio.
"Even though he will be there, his soul will always be in our hearts."
Sala's family said on Friday that his body's recovery and identification would help bring closure to "the most painful time of our life".
"We can now begin to mourn our son and our brother," they said in a statement, although they too asked for the search for Ibbotson to continue, saying that they are "hoping that the authorities will do their best to find him".

Diaz's deal at Manchester City was set to expire in June. Madrid have reportedly agreed to pay 17 million euros  (S$26 million) up front, with a further seven million euros due depending on performance.

Goal-shy and toothless Terriers end 2 years in top flight

Goal-shy and toothless Terriers end 2 years in top flight
LONDON • Huddersfield's 24th Premier League loss this season served as a microcosm of their season after they became the first top-flight team to be relegated on Saturday.
While the Terriers showed spirit at Selhurst Park, it was ultimately a lack of bite, as has been all term, that proved to be their undoing as their two-year stay in the league ended prematurely following a 2-0 defeat by Crystal Palace.
Wins for Burnley and Southampton sealed their fate as they matched Derby's record in 2008 as the only two teams to have gone down in March. While Ipswich were also relegated in 1995 with six games left to play, that season was played over 42 games, not 38.
Their lack of goals proved to be Huddersfield's undoing - they have failed to score in 38 of their 70 league games over the last two seasons - and, at 54.3 per cent, that is the highest ratio in the competition's history.
And, with just seven goals scored at the John Smith's Stadium, their tally of eight points on their home patch is seven less than 19th-placed Fulham.
Afterwards, Huddersfield manager Jan Siewert admitted their battling qualities were "not enough to win games in the Premier League".

Percentage of league games in which Huddersfield have fired blanks over the past two seasons.

The German, who left as coach of Bayern Munich's reserve team to take over from David Wagner in January, added: "It is hard to say what I am feeling - disappointment, of course.
"It sums the season up that a penalty (scored by Palace midfielder Luka Milivojevic) decides the direction."
Huddersfield skipper Christopher Schindler agreed with his boss, admitting he was "empty at the moment".
He told Sky Sports: "If we see it retrospectively, at the front and back, we weren't good enough to stay in the best league in the world.
"It's very frustrating. It is hard to find the right words... but we have to be realistic. We knew from six or eight weeks ago it was going to be hard and we needed a miracle (to stay up).
"This season, we've spent so much energy, especially in the head. Nobody wants to have this on their CV, but obviously, we had some brilliant years with this club."
"We have to work as hard as we can and make the last weeks as positive as possible as we can use this as preparation for next season."

Josh Brownhill netted the only goal of the game to dump the Terriers out of the world's oldest football competition and extend Town's losing streak to nine matches across the Premier League and FA Cup. Football: Last-gasp Moura winner sends Tottenham into Champions League final and breaks Ajax hearts

AMSTERDAM (AFP) - Lucas Moura's last-gasp strike took Tottenham Hotspur to the Champions League final for the first time in their history on Wednesday (May 8), completing his hat-trick and sealing an incredible 3-2 win over Ajax to leave the Dutch side heartbroken.
Ajax's improbable European run seemed set to go on all the way to the final, as they led 3-2 on aggregate deep in stoppage time in the second leg of the semi-final at the Johan Cruyff Arena.
That was when the ball broke to Moura in the box and the Brazilian sent a low shot beyond the despairing dive of Ajax goalkeeper Andre Onana to seal their comeback, making it 3-2 to them on the night, 3-3 on aggregate, and taking Mauricio Pochettino's men through on away goals.
The Ajax players slumped to the turf, their fans stunned, as they go out and Spurs advance to face fellow comeback kings Liverpool in an all-English final in Madrid on June 1.
Leading 1-0 after the first leg, the thrilling young Dutch side appeared to have killed the tie after captain Matthijs de Ligt and Hakim Ziyech both scored in the first half here.
That left Tottenham needing a comeback to match that of Liverpool against Barcelona the previous night, but in an even shorter amount of time.
A quickfire brace by Moura early in the second half gave them something to cling to, before he struck the decisive blow, denying Ajax a first final since 1996.
Erik ten Hag's team, who had already eliminated the holders, Real Madrid, and Cristiano Ronaldo's Juventus this season, were applauded by their devastated fans at full-time and must now somehow lift themselves to try to win the Dutch title.

They had been dealt a blow just minutes before kick-off when Brazilian winger David Neres pulled out of their starting line-up after the warm-up, his place taken by the young Dane, Kasper Dolberg.

Whirlwind start

That last-minute switch did not perturb the Dutch club, though. Far from it. Dusan Tadic moved to the left wing, and Ajax set about tearing into their opponents right from the off, just as they had done in the first leg.
They won a corner after Hugo Lloris stretched to his left to beat away a Tadic shot, and from the delivery that followed from Lasse Schoene, De Ligt rose to head home a fifth-minute opener.
Spurs - without Harry Kane but with Son Heung-min back after missing the first leg due to suspension - threatened an immediate reply as a Son cross hit the near post, but Ajax escaped and came again, a Tadic shot that fizzed just past the far post acting as a prelude for what was to follow in the 35th minute.
This time Tadic, the former Southampton player, cut the ball back for Ziyech, whose first-time shot on his left foot flew into the far corner from a difficult angle.
It was a wonderful goal, and it had surely killed the tie.
Spurs fans were understandably subdued, and they would not have harboured too much hope in Fernando Llorente as the big striker replaced Victor Wanyama for the second half.
Yet, the way Pochettino's side came back out after half-time echoed what Liverpool had done at Anfield 24 hours earlier.
They scored their first in the 55th minute, Moura combining with Alli and slotting low past Onana.

Four minutes after that, Onana made an improbable save from Llorente's effort inside the six-yard box, but the ball came back to Moura and the Brazilian turned and managed to find a corner.
He wheeled away in celebration, all too aware that Tottenham were now just one goal away from completing the turnaround.
With such tension, Ajax no longer appeared so liberated, but Ziyech twice nearly scored again, grazing the post with a first-time shot and then hitting the same upright in the 79th minute.
Jan Vertonghen hit the bar at the other end, but just when it looked like Ajax would hang on, Moura delivered the killer blow.

Home's Saswa is first casualty of SPL season

After barely a quarter of the Singapore Premier League (SPL) season, Home United are the first team to part ways with their head coach as they announced the mutual termination of Saswadimata Dasuki's contract yesterday.
The Protectors said that assistant coach Noh Rahman will take over on an interim basis as the club are in the process of appointing a new head coach.
They added in a media statement: "Home United FC and head coach Saswadimata Dasuki have come to a mutual agreement to part ways with immediate effect.
"HUFC would like to thank Saswa for his contributions, having joined the club as assistant coach in 2017, and being appointed head coach for the 2019 season.
"During his stint, he brought honours to the club, including the recent Community Shield. We thank him for his work and wish him the best for his future endeavours."
The former Singapore international, 49, declined comment, but it is understood that one of the contributing factors behind the decision is the club's poor results.
Despite being touted as one of the title contenders, Home are languishing in seventh spot in the nine-team SPL, winning just two out of six games as they struggled with injuries and poor form.
In the AFC Cup, they are second in Group H with seven points after four games, one point behind Indonesia's PSM Makassar.
It was in this second-tier Asian competition last year that Saswadimata enjoyed his greatest coaching success when he was assistant to Aidil Sharin as the Protectors emerged as Asean Zonal winners.
Noh Rahman, who was a strength and conditioning coach with the Football Association of Singapore before he joined Home this year, will face his first test on Wednesday against fourth-placed Geylang International.
The 38-year-old former Lion said: "It is never a nice feeling, standing in a position of a colleague whom you have worked with since the start of the season.
"As for my plans and goals, that is to improve the individual performance of the players and the team performance, at least until the new coach comes in.
"It is a big challenge, but we need to approach this positively."

Football: Morata injury could make Sarri enter January sales

Football: Morata injury could make Sarri enter January sales

LONDON (AFP) - Chelsea coach Maurizio Sarri is likely to assess the attacking talent on offer in the January transfer window after Alvaro Morata suffered an injury this week.
The Spanish striker was forced out of the Europa League draw at Hungarian club Vidi just before half-time after injuring his knee while shooting and will almost certainly miss Chelsea's Premier League trip to Brighton on Sunday (Dec 16).
His misfortune allowed Olivier Giroud to enter the action and the France international responded with a superb late free-kick that secured a 2-2 draw and ensured Chelsea remained unbeaten throughout the group stage as they progressed to the last 32.
Sarri must now decide whether Giroud should start at the Amex Stadium or whether he again employs Eden Hazard in a central role as part of a less physical, more mobile forward line.
Given his frequent tactical changes so far, the Italian does not appear fully convinced that either approach is ideal.
Neither Morata nor Giroud have fully impressed this season. Morata has outscored his rival for the centre-forward role with five Premier League goals to Giroud's one but has again proved inconsistent, mirroring last season's form when he was bought as a replacement for Diego Costa.

BIDING HIS TIME

Giroud told the Guardian this week he had no problem with biding his time at Chelsea because the prospect of winning a Premier League title kept him motivated.
"Alvaro (had) a great pre-season, so it was normal not to take him off the team even to put in a world champion. Let's be patient, work in training and come back stronger," he told the paper.
"I prefer to be at a big club rather than playing every week in a less prestigious team and I still have targets.
"To win a Premier League is my last dream as a footballer, maybe more than winning a Champions League, because I know how tough it is to win this league.
"I have team mates here who have won it, so I'm a bit jealous."
Former Real Madrid striker Alvaro made a promising start to his Chelsea career, scoring freely and demonstrating his strength in the air.
Recurring injuries and difficulty adapting to the physical demands of the Premier League have taken their toll, however, and Morata has rarely looked entirely comfortable since.
The man bought for £60 million (S$100 million) has never achieved the popularity at Stamford Bridge enjoyed by the abrasive Costa, whose willingness to confront defenders made him a supporters' favourite before his relationship with Sarri's predecessor Antonio Conte turned sour.
Reports this week that Barcelona could make Morata a target in January suggest he could leave sooner rather than later.
However, Sarri could not allow Morata to go without lining up a replacement - furthermore, Morata's injury this week has highlighted the risk of relying on just two principal strikers.
Giroud has given good service since he arrived from Arsenal last January but his return of four goals from 26 league appearances, 15 of those as a substitute, is not prolific.
His role for Chelsea mirrors that for France - he has an ability to bring team-mates into play in and around the opposition penalty area. To this effect, he has proved an encouraging presence for Hazard who has made it clear he prefers to operate coming in from wide areas.
Hazard's relationship with Conte suffered when the Italian used him in a more central role and having been again asked to switch, the goals have dried up for the Belgian.
He scored eight goals in the opening ten games but has now failed to find the net in eight games.
Chelsea's hopes of winning the title rest on Sarri getting the Belgian scoring again and finding a more consistent central striker - and the solution to both problems is likely to be found in the January transfer market.

Football: Iran steamroller China to reach semi-finals of Asian Cup

ABU DHABI (REUTERS) - Regional heavyweights Iran underlined their Asian Cup title credentials with a comfortable 3-0 victory over Marcello Lippi's China on Thursday (Jan 24) to reach the semi-finals of the continental championship for the first time since 2004.
Goals from forwards Mehdi Taremi, Sardar Azmoun and Karim Ansarifard combined with a record-equalling fifth straight clean sheet was enough to set up a last four date with four-times champions Japan in Al Ain next Monday.
Outmuscled by the physical Iranians and embarrassed by a series of defensive howlers, China sent World Cup-winning coach Lippi into almost certain retirement by exiting with barely a whimper at the Mohammed bin Zayed Stadium.
The lively Iranian forward line were allowed far too much space from the start and winger Alireza Jahanbakhsh sent a cross-shot whistling past the post in the fourth minute.
The massed ranks of Iran fans did not have to wait long for the first goal, though, and it came in the 18th minute from the simplest of long balls up the middle.
China defender Feng Xiaoting hesitated and Azmoun pounced, taking his time to turn before sliding the ball across the area to the unmarked Mehdi, who had all the time in the world to stroke it into the net.
Mehdi looked unlucky not to get a penalty three minutes later but the match official resisted Iranian pleas that he check with the video assistant referee (VAR), newly installed for the quarter-finals.

Feng was hauled off in the 28th minute but two minutes later another Chinese defender was deceived by a long ball, Azmoun wrestling his way past Liu Yiming before rounding goalkeeper Yan Junling and slotting the ball into the net from an angle.
China came out with a little more purpose after the break and substitute Xiao Zhi ballooned a header over the bar but they were still caught in possession too often and Iranian goalkeeper Alireza Beiranvand snuffed out anything too dangerous.
Fullback Ehsan Hajsafi drilled a low shot towards the China goal on the hour mark that Yan did well to push away and it looked like, as in their last 16 match against Oman at the same stadium, Iran would be unable to score after the break.
In stoppage time, however, Mehdi robbed China's Shi Ke on the halfway line and his pass sent Ansarifard clear to put the gloss on another emphatic step towards ending Iran's 43-year wait for a fourth continental title.

Ikhsan and Irfan on target for overseas clubs
The Fandi brothers are proving their fine vein of form is no fluke, as both scored in midweek for their respective clubs again.
In Norway, Ikhsan Fandi scored his second league goal for second-tier Raufoss IL in a 5-2 home defeat by Sandnes Ulf on Thursday night.
Ikhsan, a substitute in all his previous six appearances, scored via a towering header in the 89th minute. Last Sunday, the 20-year-old scored his first competitive goal with a late bicycle-kick winner in their 3-2 victory at Skeid.
The striker's two goals have come from just 127 minutes of action.
Raufoss are sixth in the 16-team league and occupy the last of the four play-off places, with the top two guaranteed promotion to the top division.
Ikhsan told The Straits Times: "Yes I'm happy to score again, but we are disappointed not to get any points from this game.
"Scoring in back-to-back games shows I can do well at this level. If I can get more than 10 this season, it will be a very good tally."

The defender scored in the 75th minute and helped the second-tier team to a clean sheet, his seventh this term, in scalping their top-division opponents on Wednesday.
He also scored in the 4-1 extra-time win over Army United in the previous round last month. With 31 points from 12 games, BG Pathum top League 2 and are on course for a swift return to the top tier.

Football: Di Maria and Mbappe among the goals as PSG win big again, Neymar to get treatment in Brazil

PARIS (AFP, REUTERS) - Angel di Maria scored a sumptuous free kick and Kylian Mbappe was also on target, as Paris Saint-Germain continued their relentless march towards another French Ligue 1 football title by hammering Montpellier 5-1 on Wednesday (Feb 20).
With Neymar and Edinson Cavani still absent, Layvin Kurzawa also scored for PSG at the Parc des Princes, while two own goals completed the rout.
Florent Mollet had equalised at one point in the first half for the visitors before they crumbled in a rearranged fixture that had initially been postponed in early December due to disruption caused by "yellow vest" anti-government protests in France.
PSG said in a statement that their star forward will continue treatment on his foot injury in Brazil under the supervision of the club's medical team.
The Brazil international was ruled out for 10 weeks last month after he injured a metatarsal in his right foot during a 2-0 French Cup win over Strasbourg on Jan 23.
The club confirmed that the injury was a recurrence of the problem that threatened his World Cup participation last year.
"As part of the treatment... PSG has decided to send Neymar to Brazil for 10 days," it said, adding that the 27-year-old would leave on Thursday.
As they warm up for the second leg of their Champions League last-16 tie against Manchester United on March 6, PSG are now a huge 15 points clear of second-placed Lille, and still have a game in hand as they race to a sixth Ligue 1 title in seven seasons.
"It came down to patience, and quality, and a bit of luck as well," said PSG coach Thomas Tuchel after his side maintained their perfect home record in the league this season.
It was also their ninth win by a margin of at least four goals in the current campaign.
"It was not our best performance, but with our attacking quality it was a deserved victory," added Tuchel.
He was missing a host of players for this game, with skipper Thiago Silva suspended.
French international left-back Kurzawa was making his first start in the league in an injury-hit season and he opened the scoring in the 13th minute with a header from a Daniel Alves cross.
However, Montpellier recovered well from that and claimed a deserved leveller just after the half-hour mark from a Mollet free kick. Gianluigi Buffon thought he had kept it out, but goal-line technology confirmed the ball had just crossed the line.
Nevertheless, di Maria restored PSG's lead in first-half stoppage time with a stunning dead-ball strike from 30 yards that went in off the underside of the bar for his sixth league goal of the season.
PSG then ran away with the game in the closing stages, although only after both Mbappe and substitute Eric-Maxim Choupo Moting had efforts disallowed for offside.

Two own goals

It was 3-1 in the 73rd minute when Christopher Nkunku, on a rare start, saw his header deflect in off Petar Skuletic, and Mbappe then took centre stage.
The young World Cup winner turned in a Kurzawa centre in the 78th minute, but the goal was attributed to Montpellier's 41-year-old defender Hilton.
From the restart, PSG won possession back and Mbappe beat Montpellier goalkeeper Benjamin Lecomte with the aid of a huge deflection off Hilton.
This time the goal was given to Mbappe, who now has 20 goals in 19 league appearances this season, and 25 in all competitions.
Montpellier remain sixth, while PSG now host mid-table Nimes on Saturday before a French Cup quarter-final against Dijon and then a visit to Caen, as their busy schedule continues before the visit of United, who trail 2-0 after the first leg.
The other game in France on Wednesday saw bottom side Guingamp draw 0-0 at Bordeaux.

Football: Taxi driver charged with attempted murder after Man Utd fan stabbed in Paris

PARIS (AFP) - A taxi driver who allegedly stabbed a Manchester United fan in the chest after the club's midweek Champions League victory over PSG was Saturday (March 9) charged with attempted murder, a judicial source said.
French police had arrested a man suspected of the stabbing on Friday (March 8) and he has now been detained in custody.
According to the Sky Sports television channel, the 44-year-old United fan was travelling in a taxi with friends to the centre of Paris after the game which the English side won 3-1 when the driver objected to their boisterous celebrations.
"The driver pulled over to get them out of his taxi, before pulling out a knife and threatening the female passenger in the group," claimed Sky.
"The victim tried to intervene to protect her, but the driver then turned the knife on him, stabbing him in the chest with what's been described as 'a large blade'."
Manchester United sent their support to the fan.
"We were shocked to hear about the incident with one of our fans who was stabbed while in Paris for the Champions League game," United said in a statement.
"Everyone at the club wishes him well during his recovery."
A French police source confirmed a stabbing incident to AFP after the game but said the victim was believed to not have suffered life-threatening injuries.

Football: You can reach 1,000 goals, Pele tells French star Kylian Mbappe

PARIS (AFP) - Football legend Pele told Kylian Mbappe on Tuesday (April 2) that he believes the French World Cup winner can emulate his own achievement of scoring 1,000 career goals.
The 78-year-old Brazilian claims to have netted over 1,000 goals in his career, while Mbappe has so far managed 103 in total, with 92 of those coming at the top level.
"It's possible, I scored exactly 1,025, so 1,000 goals is possible for him," Pele told AFP in Paris, where he met Mbappe at a sponsor event for Hublot watches.
Mbappe, who last year became only the second teenager to score in a World Cup final after Pele in France's 4-2 victory over Croatia, played down Pele's comments.
"I think that even if we count the goals on inter-city pitches and goals on the PlayStation, I won't be able to reach the 1,000-goal mark," said the 20-year-old Paris St Germain forward.
"We will try to get as close as we can, but I think I'll be a long way off it at the end of my career."
Mbappe has scored 32 goals in all competitions for PSG this season, including 27 from only 24 Ligue 1 appearances.
Pele was only 21 when he won his second World Cup in 1962, adding a third eight years later.
"There's only one 'King' and he's there," said Mbappe. "I'm just Kylian, I'm trying to do my best to help my team and my national side.
"The comparisons are flattering but I know very well that I will never do what he did."
It was not the first time that Mbappe has had to temper comparisons with Pele, after a rush to crown him a future footballing great during the World Cup in Russia, where he scored four goals in total.
But the former Monaco striker insists that he is not focused on becoming the best player of modern times.
"When Pele was playing, he didn't think he wanted to be the best player in history, he wanted to have fun, help his country and his club, which he did," he said.
"What I want is to help PSG, the France team and afterwards it will be other people who tell you that you are the best.
"Everyone says that he is the best, but if you are (the best), there's no need to say it. It's not a goal for me."
Pele spent the majority of his career at Santos in his home country, bar a spell in the United States with the New York Cosmos shortly before his retirement.
He told Mbappe, who has been repeatedly linked with a move away from PSG, that the key to smashing goalscoring records is playing in the very best teams.
"People tend to say that goals are the most important thing - I thank God for having scored so many in my career - but we must know that we need to be well-supported, you can't score on your own, you need good teammates, that's very important."
Mbappe and his Paris teammates have only the French Cup left to fight for this season, with the Ligue 1 title all but secured and their Champions League campaign over after a humiliating defeat by Manchester United.

Sterling Raheem to skipper England

Sterling Raheem to skipper England
GUIMARAES (Portugal) • Raheem Sterling is set to lead England out for the first time at today's Nations League semi-final against the Netherlands.
The Manchester City forward will be handed the honour as a reward for a half-century of appearances, casting doubt over whether Champions League finalists Harry Kane, who is the regular skipper, and Jordan Henderson will start.
The pair are among seven players in Gareth Southgate's 23-man team who reported for duty only this week after their involvement in Madrid last Saturday.
While the England manager may be tempted to select players with whom he has trained more extensively over the past few weeks for the encounter with Ronald Koeman's men, Sterling is considered to be one of the first names on his team sheet.
The former Middlesbrough boss has elevated him into his core "leadership group" in recent times and has spoken of his qualities.

 REUTERS
Regular captain, Tottenham's Harry Kane, and Liverpool's Jordan Henderson are set to be rested after their June 1 Champions League final exertions - paving the way for Raheem Sterling (left) to lead England out.  PHOTO: REUTERS

He said of the 24-year-old in March: "When you speak to other young players, he's one of the first they speak about making them feel really comfortable in the environment.
"We've had three or four players captaining the team, and Raheem is developing lots of the qualities those guys have."
Although Southgate has stipulated he would have no qualms about throwing Kane into the fray, the Tottenham striker still lacks match fitness. He started in their 2-0 Champions League final loss to Liverpool after not playing since early April following ankle ligament damage.
There are alternative options, however, with a prospective front three of Jadon Sancho, Marcus Rashford and Sterling, and a midfield trio of Fabian Delph, Declan Rice and Ross Barkley.
Calling Sterling "an amazing young man", Delph feels the recognition his City teammate is getting is fully deserved and there is more to come.
He added: "I still believe he's operating at about 80 per cent. So if he can push himself a bit more, which I know he will because his mindset is very good, the sky's the limit in the next couple of years."
This Nations League tournament in Portugal presents England a real chance of silverware for the first time since Le Tournoi in 1997, but in their way stand a resurgent Dutch side.

HIGH PRAISE
When you speak to other young players, he's one of the first they speak about making them feel really comfortable in the environment. We've had three or four players captaining the team, and Raheem is developing lots of the qualities those guys have.
GARETH SOUTHGATE, England coach, on Raheem Sterling's qualities.

The Oranje have had a lean few years after failing to make it to last year's World Cup and Euro 2016, but with a golden crop of young players, there are few fears they will miss out for a third consecutive major tournament.
The Netherlands have already shown their promise in knocking out world champions France and Germany to make the last four of the Nations League.
There were also as many Dutch players as English players (two) in Liverpool's starting XI as they lifted their sixth European Cup and Koeman is confident he can keep Southgate's men at bay as "we have the best centre defenders with Matthijs de Ligt and Virgil van Dijk".
The former Everton boss said: "In the last few years, yes, it is the best generation, but they are just starting. We are on a good way back to where we would like to stay as a country."
