Football: Messi fires Barcelona to 26th Spanish La Liga title

BARCELONA (REUTERS) - Lionel Messi clinched an eighth La Liga title for Barcelona in 11 seasons on Saturday (April 27) as he scored the only goal in a 1-0 win at home to Levante.
The Argentine star struck his league-leading 34th goal of the campaign after coming off the bench for the second half to help Barca wrap up the title with three games remaining.
Barca hold a nine-point lead over second-placed Atletico Madrid, but the Catalans cannot be overtaken thanks to their superior head-to-head record.
It is Barca's 26th league title and nudges them closer to Real Madrid's record of 33 in Spain.
"To win the title with a distance and gap is difficult with the rivals we have. We've done it two years in a row," Barca coach Ernesto Valverde told Movistar.
"We're happy and to see people enjoying it makes us proud. But we still have challenges ahead."
Valverde initially left Messi on the bench with Wednesday's Champions League semi-final first leg against Liverpool in mind, but he replaced Philippe Coutinho at the break at the Camp Nou.
Coutinho and Luis Suarez pressed Levante goalkeeper Aitor Fernandez into action early on, the Brazilian coming closest to breaking the deadlock when his free-kick rattled the crossbar shortly before half-time.
He was sacrificed for Messi though, and it proved an inspired decision as the Argentine swept in the winner on 62 minutes following a frantic scramble inside the Levante area.
The visitors, not yet safe from the threat of relegation, responded and put Barca on the defensive but were denied a last-gasp equaliser when the ball hit the post and rolled into the grateful arms of Marc-Andre ter Stegen.
ATLETICO DELAY THE PARTY
Atletico had delayed Barca's title party earlier in the day as they scraped past strugglers Real Valladolid 1-0 after surviving late VAR penalty drama.
Joaquin Fernandez's own goal put Atletico ahead midway through the second half, but they had to endure a nervy final few minutes in which Jan Oblak had to be at his best and they survived a late VAR check over what looked like a clear Santiago Arias handball in the area.
"It's controversial, a ball that hits the hand and the referee's decision is to see if it's voluntary or not," said Saul Niguez, whose cross led to their fortunate winner.
Diego Simeone's side are nine points ahead of local rivals and reigning European champions Real Madrid, who travel to Rayo Vallecano on Sunday amid increasing speculation they will respond to a disappointing season by swooping for Eden Hazard and Neymar.
"It's what we deserve, no more, no less. We've come so far," added Saul.
"There were moments when we wanted to be first and others that I would say no, that's what we deserve."
Valladolid meanwhile stay 17th, just one point and a place away from the relegation zone after a match they will feel they were unlucky to lose.
Earlier on Saturday, Athletic Bilbao and Alaves did their chances of European football next season no favours with a 1-1 draw in the Basque Country.
Seventh-placed Bilbao are five points away from the Champions league places - with Alaves a further three points back - and could also see Valencia and Sevilla take the Europa league further away from them when they take on Eibar and Girona.

United's massive 'rebuilding job'

United's massive 'rebuilding job'

BARCELONA • After their remote hopes of another improbable Champions League revival were stopped dead by Lionel Messi and a rampant Barcelona, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer admitted his Manchester United side have to undergo a huge overhaul to return to Europe's elite.
United tried in vain to summon up the spirit of 1999 at the same Nou Camp where they stunned Bayern Munich with a 2-1 comeback win in the Champions League final.
While they started the second leg of their quarter-final brightly, with Marcus Rashford hitting the bar, a pair of mistakes gave Messi the chance to put the Red Devils away.
Ashley Young, playing as left-back in place of the suspended Luke Shaw, gave the ball away for the first while David de Gea, United's player of the year four times in the past five years, let a tame effort slip under his hands.
Just like that, their hosts were out of sight 3-0 on Tuesday and 4-0 on aggregate, the first time United have lost by four or more goals in a two-legged European knockout tie.
Solskjaer said he knew all along "there is work to be done and the next few years are going to be massive to get to the level that Barcelona and other teams are at".
The Norwegian added: "We were fighting against a great team... but I've said all along this isn't going to change overnight.

START FROM SCRATCH
There is work to be done and the next few years are going to be massive to get to the level that Barcelona and other teams are at.
OLE GUNNAR SOLSKJAER, Manchester United manager, on the scale of the job at hand.

"We've good players to work with and, at the moment, we've done really well to get to the quarters and challenge for top four (in the Premier League). But we've got a rebuilding job. It starts with the coaches and players, and with one or two additions (in the summer).
"We're on with the job and have spoken to the players we need to get the best out of each other, create an environment of top-class attitude, world-class attitude every single day."
While he has restored United's confidence, which hit rock-bottom under Jose Mourinho, and has overseen an improvement in results in the four months since taking the job in December, the scale of the long-term surgery his side need was laid bare in Spain.
Barcelona, led by a brace from Messi and a fine curling strike from Philippe Coutinho, were dominant, with Solskjaer conceding he "could see the difference between the two teams".
His reasoning cut little ice with former Chelsea striker Tony Cascarino, though, who felt that United's lack of character was apparent, with "no one performing to a standard anywhere near good enough to take on Barcelona".
But, while the pundit also reserved criticism for Paul Pogba for "playing his own kind of game", former United star Paul Scholes feels the France midfielder remains a player Solskjaer should retain and build his side around.
Meanwhile, United said yesterday they are investigating racist abuse directed at defender Young on social media after the loss to Barcelona.
The England international was targeted on Twitter after the 33-year-old full-back endured a disappointing night at the Nou Camp.
"Manchester United utterly condemns racist social media comments posted around yesterday's Champions League fixture," the club said in a statement.
"We are working to identify individuals involved and we will take the strongest possible action we can against them."

Blues expect hard time at Fulham after Ranieri exit
LONDON • Chelsea manager Maurizio Sarri has backed the sacked Claudio Ranieri to come back stronger, at the same time warning his players to expect a strong reaction today from Fulham following the departure of his fellow Italian.
Fulham, stuck in the relegation zone, dismissed Ranieri on Thursday and appointed Scott Parker as caretaker manager.
"I'm really very sorry," Sarri said of his compatriot. "But I know very well his character, so I know very well that we will see him very soon, on another bench.
"Usually, when there is a change of coach, there is a reaction. And so we have to front the reaction.
"Then it's difficult for us to prepare the match, to know their new systems and ideas. They also have opportunities to save themselves, so we'll have to play a very difficult match, a derby."
The Premier League match at Craven Cottage today is Chelsea's third in eight days after their penalty shoot-out defeat in the League Cup final by Manchester City and Wednesday's league win over Tottenham.
The Chelsea boss refused to confirm whether Kepa Arrizabalaga will return to the team today after the controversial goalkeeper was cast into exile following his Wembley mutiny. The Spaniard was fined over his refusal to be substituted in the closing moments against City.
Willy Caballero started against Tottenham, although Sarri insisted after the match that Kepa, the former Athletic Bilbao star, remained his first choice.
Sarri said the two goalkeepers will share duties in the next two games, with one playing today and the other in Thursday's Europa League last-16, first-leg clash with Dynamo Kiev.

Football: Leicester confirm appointment of Rodgers as manager

LONDON (AFP) - Leicester City appointed Brendan Rodgers as the Foxes' new manager on a three-year deal on Tuesday (Feb 26) as Neil Lennon returned to Celtic until the end of the season as Rodgers' successor.
Former Liverpool manager Rodgers won seven domestic trophies in nearly three seasons in charge of the Glasgow giants and leaves the Hoops eight points clear at the top of the Scottish Premiership.
"Brendan, 46, has signed a deal with the Foxes to June 2022 and will be at King Power Stadium for Tuesday night's Premier League visit of Brighton and Hove Albion," Leicester said in a statement.
"He will take charge of the squad for the first time ahead of Sunday's trip to Watford."
Leicester sacked Claude Puel on Sunday after a 4-1 defeat by Crystal Palace left the 2015/16 Premier League champions languishing in 12th.
"At Leicester City, the foundations are in place for us to grow and achieve many things," said Rodgers.
"Hopefully, with my experiences and the talent of the players in our squad we can be successful together.
"I'm very privileged and honoured to be here as Leicester City manager and I'll give my life to make the supporters proud of their club."

Rodgers' departure with just three months of the season to go is a huge blow to Celtic, who moved quickly to reappoint a club legend in Lennon.
"I have given everything to Celtic as a player and manager already in my career and I am ready to do the same again," said Lennon.
"I will be doing all I can to continue the great work that has gone on in recent years."
The Northern Irishman won three league titles in four years during his first spell in charge between 2010 and 2014 and led Celtic to the last 16 of the Champions League after famously beating Barcelona in 2012.
"Neil has already enjoyed a hugely successful spell as manager of Celtic and, of course, served the club with distinction as player and captain over so many years," said Celtic in a statement.
"Neil will take up his role immediately and will be in charge of the team for the trip to Tynecastle tomorrow (Wednesday) against Heart of Midlothian."

CELTIC 'DISAPPOINTED' TO SEE RODGERS LEAVE

Rodgers has rebuilt his reputation in Scotland after being sacked by Liverpool in 2015, just a year after nearly delivering a long-awaited Premier League title.
He joined Celtic in 2016 and has won every domestic trophy on offer since, lifting two trebles of Scottish Premiership, Scottish Cup and League Cup, as well as this season's League Cup.
However, not even the lure of a third treble or breaking the Scottish record by winning 10 league titles in a row was enough for Rodgers to reject the riches and prestige of a return to the Premier League.
"Brendan is a football manager of the highest quality and we are very disappointed to see him leave the club," said Celtic chief executive Peter Lawwell in a statement.
"This is an opportunity he wished to pursue and that is something we have to respect.
"He gave the club so much and has created so many wonderful memories for the club and our supporters. His achievements are historic."
Despite his success in Scotland, Rodgers's reign will also be remembered for a lack of progress in European football.
His first match in charge of 'The Bhoys' was a humiliating 1-0 loss to Lincoln Red Imps of Gibraltar in the first leg of a Champions League qualifier.
Celtic did make it to the group stage of the Champions League in his first two seasons in charge, but suffered club-record defeats in a 7-0 thrashing away to Barcelona and 5-0 at home to Paris Saint-Germain.
Defeat by Valencia last week saw the Hoops eliminated in the last 32 of the Europa League for a second straight season.

Football: Uefa panel to recommend Man City Champions League ban, says report

NEW YORK (AFP) - European football's financial regulators are poised to recommend that newly minted Premier League champions Manchester City be barred from the Champions League, the New York Times reported Monday (May 13).
European football's governing body Uefa and the Premier League launched an investigation this year after allegations made in German magazine Der Spiegel that the club broke Financial Fair Play rules.
Members of the investigatory chamber of Uefa's financial control board, set up to analyse the accounts of clubs suspected of breaking cost-control regulations, met two weeks ago in Switzerland to finalize their conclusions, the newspaper said.
"The investigatory panel's leader, the former prime minister of Belgium Yves Leterme, will have the final say on the submission to a separate adjudicatory chamber, which could be filed as soon as this week. The body is expected to seek at least a one-season ban," the Times said.
It was unclear if such a ban, if levied, would be enforced next season or in the 2020-21 campaign, the Times said, noting that with qualifying for Europe's most prestigious and lucrative club championship set to start in June there is little time to finalize a sanction.
Manchester City would also have the right to appeal such a ban to the Court of Arbitration for Sport.
Manchester City vigorously denied any financial irregularities, saying in March they welcomed Uefa's investigation as an opportunity to clear their name.

City, who were fined 60 million euros (S$92.2 million) and subjected to squad, wage and spending caps in a 2014 settlement agreed with Uefa following a previous breach of the rules.
But the club says the claims made in Der Spiegel were an "organised and clear" attempt to damage its reputation.

BAGHDAD (AFP) - Iraq's football federation said on Monday (Jan 28) that it was investigating whether the national team players in Abu Dhabi for the Asian Cup this month sneaked out of their hotel to party at a nightclub.
Media reports have alleged that after their draw against Iran last week in the final group-stage match, some Iraqi players travelled to nearby Dubai for a night out.
"We have decided to form a fact-finding committee over what was reported by different media and have invited all relevant parties to take part," the federation said in a statement.
If the allegations prove to be correct, the federation would consider legal action for "defamation" and harming Iraq's reputation, its media head Mohammad Khalaf told AFP.
Iraq were knocked out of the tournament with a 1-0 defeat by Qatar in the last 16.
Last year, Iraqi national teams were embroiled in a string of age-fraud scandals.
Adult players were found to have falsified ages on their passports to represent the Under-16 squad, and the Under-23 team also dropped out of the Asian Games tournament amid similar allegations of lying.
It came as Fifa allowed Iraq to host international matches for the first time in three decades.

Football: Diego Maradona recovering in Argentinian hospital after surgery for stomach bleeding

BUENOS AIRES (REUTERS) - Argentina's World Cup-winning captain Diego Maradona was recovering in hospital on Saturday (Jan 12) after successfully undergoing a routine operation for stomach bleeding, his lawyer said.
The 58-year old former Boca Juniors and Napoli player discovered the problem in early January during a check-up at a hospital in Olivos, on the outskirts of Buenos Aires.
The operation, to stem bleeding caused by a hernia, was not complicated but aimed to resolve what one source told Reuters were "inconveniences" caused by the issue.
"Diego Maradona's surgical procedure is over," his lawyer Matias Morla said on Twitter. "Thank God everything went perfectly."
Maradona has suffered frequent periods in hospital over the years, often due to the extravagant lifestyle that helped make him one of the most admired players of the 20th century. He last fell ill at the 2018 World Cup in Russia, where he fainted in an executive box at the Argentina-Nigeria group-stage game.
Maradona was taken to hospital in 2004 with severe heart and respiratory problems linked to cocaine use. He later underwent drug rehabilitation in Cuba and Argentina before a stomach-stapling operation in 2005 helped him lose weight.
In 2007, he checked himself into a clinic in Buenos Aires to help him overcome alcohol-abuse problems. In recent months he has walked with the aid of crutches due to problems with his knees.
Doctors discovered the bleeding shortly before Maradona was due to fly to Mexico, where he is coach of second-division side Dorados de Sinaloa.
He would return to lead the club for a second season as soon as his recuperation was complete, the lawyer said. "Now we wait for the recovery so Diego can return to work as soon as possible," he added.

EPL title still in our hands: Guardiola

EPL title still in our hands: Guardiola

LONDON • Little over 60 hours after their extraordinary Champions League drama, Manchester City and Tottenham will face each other again at the Etihad Stadium tomorrow, this time in the Premier League.
City's dream of a quadruple of titles ended with their away-goals loss to Spurs on Wednesday.
The destiny of the English title remains in the hands of Pep Guardiola's side, however, and they know that if they win their remaining five games, they will retain their title.
Yet this is now a major test of their character after what was a crushing exit from Europe. A late Raheem Sterling goal that would have sent City through was ruled out for offside following a review by the video assistant referee.
Said Guardiola: "We have to stand up and react. It is a (short) time and the same team. We can't think too much now. We have to try to sleep as much as possible and prepare for the game."
City have won the League Cup and will face Watford in the final of the FA Cup, meaning a treble remains a realistic objective.
"We have fought for nine or 10 months in the Premier League and still we are there. It is in our hands. Today is tough and tomorrow will be tough too but, the day after, we will be ready," added the Spaniard.
City are on 83 points and two behind leaders Liverpool, but have a game in hand - although it is at city rivals Manchester United next Wednesday.
Liverpool will expect to pick up three points at Cardiff on Sunday, although the 18th-placed team have been boosted by Tuesday's win at Brighton that kept alive their hopes of avoiding relegation.
City winger Bernardo Silva said there is no time to wallow in misery, as he rallied his teammates to give a final push for domestic glory.
"We have a game in three days against Tottenham, again here at home," said the 24-year-old.
"We need the three points to win (the league). Obviously, we are very disappointed, but we will have to forget about it and go for the competitions we are still in.
"It is not time for revenge; it is time for another competition, time to keep us alive in the title race.
"We will try to win the game in the same way we did, knowing we are playing against a very good team.
"We know Liverpool will probably win all their games, so we have to win all our games too."
Third-placed Spurs have plenty to play for as well. The battle for a top-four finish and qualification for the Champions League is tight with Arsenal and Chelsea just a point behind and sixth-placed United three points adrift.

Football: Guardiola hopeful De Bruyne fit for crucial Liverpool clash

MANCHESTER, United Kingdom (AFP) - Kevin de Bruyne could return from injury as Manchester City bid to inflict Liverpool's first Premier League defeat of the season and put pressure on them in the title race, City manager Pep Guardiola said on Wednesday (Jan 2).
The return of De Bruyne would boost City's hopes of beating Liverpool and reducing their lead at the top to four points.
It would also be a filip to their title defence which suffered a serious blow with three defeats in their last five league matches.
The 27-year-old Belgian midfielder, City's player of the year, has endured an injury-affected campaign, restricting him to just six league appearances.
He was out of action from August until late October with a knee injury, then suffered a calf problem in early November that sidelined him for more than a month.
Having returned again in mid-December, he suffered a muscle problem during the defeat at Leicester on Boxing Day.
Guardiola, though, is hopeful De Bruyne can feature on Thursday as City look to drag themselves back into the title race.
"He trained today," said Guardiola at his eve of match press conference.
"Tomorrow (Thursday), we need another check in the morning but he is much better."

'THE BEST TEAM IN EUROPE'

In contrast to City's indifferent recent league record Jurgen Klopp's side have won nine league matches in a row, and have the best defensive record, conceding eight goals in 20 matches this season.
During that nine-match winning run, Liverpool have kept six clean sheets and conceded just three goals, and Guardiola acknowledges his own team have to improve their defensive record, as well as becoming more ruthless in attack.

"You have to see how many chances we concede," said Guardiola.
"We are the second-best team in Europe in terms of the chances we create, so we are not precise enough.
"In the past few games, we have conceded more goals than usual but the number of chances we have conceded is not too much."
Guardiola has tried to play down suggestions defeat on Thursday would effectively end City's chances of retaining the title they won with a competition record of 100 points last May.
"The reality is clear. We are seven points down, but it is the second game of the second half of the season, so there are a lot of points to play for," said Guardiola.
"I have the feeling it is a big opportunity for us to reduce the gap.
"Everybody is asking what will happen if we lose but we are going to try to win.
"It is our chance to fight for the Premier League, to go as far as possible," added the 47-year-old Spaniard.
Liverpool have dropped just six points all season, and Guardiola believes they are currently the most consistent team in Europe.
"It is Liverpool, the best team in all England in history.
"We can beat them. I know today nobody trusts us but it is what it is.
"They are in the moment the best team in Europe, in their consistency, the way they control the details in their game."

Football: Spalletti leaves Inter Milan despite securing Champions League spot, Conte set to take over

MILAN (AFP) - Luciano Spalletti has left Inter Milan, the Serie A club announced on Thursday (May 30), with former Italy manager Antonio Conte set to be announced as the club's new coach.
"Luciano Spalletti is no longer head coach of the first team," Inter said in a statement. "The club wishes to thank Spalletti for his work and the results achieved together."
Spalletti's exit comes despite sealing Inter's Champions League berth for a second consecutive year on the final day of the Serie A season last Sunday.
But he paid with his job for failing to win any silverware during his two-year spell with the Chinese-owned club, as the 18-time Serie A champions search for a first trophy since the Coppa Italia in 2011.
Inter Milan chairman Steven Zhang paid tribute to the 60-year-old who returned the three-time European winners to the Champions League this season after a seven-year absence.
"A coach, a teacher, a friend," he wrote on Instagram with a photo of himself alongside Spalletti.
"You have always given your best, either rain or shine. This 2 years of adventure means so much for Inter and for me personally.

"We will never forget your dedication to this team, and we all thank you from the bottom of our hearts. Once you are the coach of Inter, you would be always my coach. Grazie Mister Spalletti."
Former Italy and Chelsea coach Conte is reported to have already agreed a three-year deal reportedly worth €9 million (S$13.8 million) plus bonuses per season to replace Spalletti.
The 49-year-old Conte will be officially announced as the new coach on Friday, Gazzetta Dello Sport reported.
Conte won the first three of Juventus' eight straight Serie A titles and the English Premier League and FA Cup with Chelsea.
Spalletti took over at Inter in mid-2017 having previously coached Zenit Saint Petersburg and Roma.
But it was a season of highs and lows with the club eliminated at the group stage of the Champions League in which they were drawn with Barcelona and Tottenham.
They fell in the last 16 of the Europa League.

Eleven Sports hit by poor take-up rate in UK

LONDON • Eleven Sports, the self-styled "Netflix of Sports" controlled by Leeds United owner Andrea Radrizzani, could be facing closure in the UK & Ireland after failing to attract enough subscribers.
The service, launched less than four months ago, has the UK rights to sports including Italy's Serie A, Spain's LaLiga and the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC).
Eleven Sports, which was forced to stop its controversial practice of broadcasting European games on Saturday afternoons after pressure from football stakeholders, is aiming to renegotiate rights deals to avoid pulling the plug on its service.
The situation has been created by the UFC triggering an exit clause on its exclusive deal with Eleven Sports, which was due to begin next month, after Eleven Sports was unable to secure promised distribution via pay-TV platforms including Sky, Virgin Media and BT.
Eleven Sports is aiming to renegotiate its sports rights deals at a much cheaper rate to try and continue with a much smaller, commercially viable operation in the UK.
"Without carriage agreements with the existing platforms, alongside the challenges posed by rampant piracy, the current market dynamics in the UK & Ireland are very hostile for new entrants," said a spokesman for Eleven Sports.
"We are in discussion with our rights partners, LaLiga and IMG, about how we can restructure our existing agreements in order to continue our current OTT (streaming) service."
UFC, the popular mixed martial arts competition, is understood to be back in talks with the previous rights holder BT about a new broadcast deal.
Eleven Sports is preparing to hand back the TV rights for Serie A to IMG, which acts as agent, which would allow them to be resold.
The streaming service secured the rights to Serie A in July in a three-year deal, ending BT's six-year association with Italy's top league. In May, Eleven Sports struck a three-year deal with LaLiga, ending Sky's 20-year association with Spain's top flight.
Eleven Sports has attracted only about 50,000 subscriptions since its UK launch in August, according to the Telegraph, which broke the news of the streaming service's difficulties. Eleven Sports charges £5.99 (S$10.40) a month. Rival sports streaming service Dazn, which is owned by the Warner Music owner and Spotify investor Len Blavatnik, has said it will not launch in the UK because the market is too competitive.
Eleven Sports, which also operates in markets including Poland and Portugal, is controlled via the holding company Aser which in turn is controlled by Radrizzani.
In April, the London offices of IMG and MP & Silva, the sports rights agency co-founded by Radrizzani, were raided by officials from the European Commission investigating potential sports rights cartels.

Football: Pogba deletes cryptic post of him smiling after Mourinho is axed

LONDON (AFP) - Manchester United midfielder Paul Pogba quickly deleted a controversial social media post of him smiling after manager Jose Mourinho was sacked by the club on Tuesday (Dec 18).
Mourinho was dismissed on Tuesday after United's worst start in 28 years left them trailing Premier League leaders Liverpool by 19 points.
The volatile Mourinho's exit was in part triggered by the breakdown of his relationship with France midfielder Pogba, who did not even make an appearance as a substitute for Sunday's dismal 3-1 defeat at Liverpool.
Pogba took to Instagram just moments after news of Mourinho's sacking broke, posting a picture of himself smiling and writing "caption this" next to it.
The 25-year-old's post was widely interpreted as celebrating Mourinho's departure and he was criticised by former United defender Gary Neville, who responded on Twitter by writing: "You do one as well!", suggesting he should leave the club as well.
Over 64,000 people had "liked" Pogba's cheeky message, but he deleted the post 10 minutes later amid claims it was actually part of a marketing campaign for Adidas.
The controversy was an appropriately rancorous end to the World Cup winner's stormy relationship with Mourinho.

Pogba joined United for a club record £89 million (S$150 million) just weeks after Mourinho was hired in 2016.
But the former Juventus player was repeatedly criticised by Mourinho during his two-and-a-half year reign.
After his inspired performances helped France win the World Cup in Russia in July, Mourinho opted not to praise Pogba, instead infuriating the star by publicly asking why he did not try as hard for United.
Pogba was stripped of the United vice-captaincy earlier this season.

The pair were captured having a frosty exchange on the training ground as Mourinho grew angry with his key midfielder's lethargic performances, dropping him on several occasions to spark talk he would be sold by the end of the season.
Former United midfielder Darren Fletcher knew Pogba during the Frenchman's first spell with the club as a youngster and he says his old team-mate "needs a kick up the backside".

Fletcher fears Mourinho's sacking could convince the flamboyant Pogba that he can now get away with whatever behaviour he feels like, unless the new manager clamps down quickly.
"I don't think he's conducted himself well recently and I think he needs a kick up the backside," Fletcher told the BBC.
"I think his post today, whether it was his team or whatever, it was totally out of order. That's a big concern for me.
"Everybody talked about, 'Who's going to go, is it going to be Pogba or Mourinho'. Now, if Pogba starts thinking that he's bigger than Mourinho, there's your next problem.
"Somebody needs to get control of Paul and say, 'Listen, this hasn't been a battle between Mourinho and Pogba and you've won, you've got to go and prove yourself now.'
"A manager's got to come in there and demand more from him, to lead this team forward."

Football: Wolves deepen Cardiff's relegation plight with 2-0 win

WOLVERHAMPTON, England (REUTERS) - Wolverhampton Wanderers shook off their recent poor Premier League form to ease past Cardiff City 2-0 on Saturday (March 2) and leave the Welsh team in the relegation zone after a third straight defeat.
Desperate for a win to help their quest for Premier League survival, Neil Warnock's side started strongly with plenty of possession and could have had the first goal when Wolves keeper John Ruddy fumbled the ball on the line from a corner.
But Nuno Espirito Santo's Wolves showed why they are seventh in the Premier League, quickly imposing their fast-breaking and slick-passing game in front of an appreciative crowd of 31,309 at the Molineux stadium.
Portuguese striker Diogo Jota smashed in the first goal from close range in the 16th minute after great link-up play and an assist by fellow forward Raul Jimenez.
Two minutes later, Jota repaid the favour, laying up the ball for Mexican Jimenez to fire into the bottom left-hand corner for 2-0.
"To be honest, I was stood there 15 minutes gone thinking I've never been as comfortable at Wolves, the crowd were restless, then within two minutes we were 2-0 down," Warnock said.
"We committed suicide... stupid goals."
Wolves, who squandered numerous chances for a bigger scoreline, needed the result after a surprise mid-week defeat at Huddersfield and two draws in their previous league outings.

'GLOOMY' CARDIFF

Cardiff, who came up from the Championship with Wolves last year, now sit third from bottom in the Premier League, with a worrying 10 goals conceded in their last three games and a two-point gap from Southampton in 17th.
The gulf between them and Wolves was illustrated in the first half when Jota cheekily put the ball between the legs of Cardiff's burly Icelandic midfielder Aron Gunnarsson, who looked bemused.
Jota, who was substituted in the second half, has now been involved in nine goals in his last seven games in all competitions at Molineux, scoring five and assisting four.
The win gave Wolves 43 points after 29 games - their highest ever haul in the Premier League in a fantastic season for the central English club rejuvenated under their Portuguese manager.
On the wings, Ruben Vinagre and Adama Traore terrorised Cardiff all afternoon with their pace and trickery.
But the demanding Nuno was disappointed Wolves did not score more. "I wasn't too pleased with the second half, we must do better when we have superiority," he said.
Warnock complained that Wolves defender Ryan Bennett should have been sent off for a second yellow card, but said Cardiff had to look at themselves for solutions.
"We've got to stop feeling sorry for ourselves and make our own luck. We're not scoring goals and we're conceding silly goals, it's a bad recipe, isn't it? It's a gloomy situation."

Football: Guardiola expects De Bruyne to miss derby after limping off

LONDON (DPA) - Pep Guardiola expects Kevin De Bruyne to miss this week's Manchester derby after the midfielder limped off with an injury on Saturday (April 20).
De Bruyne appeared to stumble as he shot in the first half of Manchester City's 1-0 win over Tottenham at the Etihad Stadium.
The Belgium international immediately sat on the pitch holding his left leg and was replaced by Fernandinho.
"I didn't speak with him or the doctors," Guardiola said when asked if De Bruyne would be available against Manchester United on Wednesday.
"It was something muscular... I don't know how big the impact is.
"We will see tomorrow but I think for the next game, he will be out."
The win lifted City top of the table above Liverpool, who visit Cardiff on Sunday, with four games remaining.

Football: Kane could be out for rest of the season, says Pochettino

LONDON (AFP) - Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino said talisman Harry Kane could be out of the rest of the season after he limped off injured in the second half of his team's 1-0 Champions League victory against Manchester City on Tuesday (April 9).
Kane appeared to roll his left ankle in a coming-together with City's Fabian Delph and was replaced by Lucas Moura in the 58th minute.
He was helped down the tunnel with the score still at 0-0.
Son Heung-min put Spurs ahead in the 78th minute and they held on to win the match 1-0, putting themselves in pole position with the second leg of the quarter-final to come in Manchester on April 17.
"It's very, very sad. It's going to be tough and we're going to miss him - maybe for the rest of the season," Tottenham's Argentine coach told BT Sport.
Spurs goalkeeper Hugo Lloris said he did not know the full extent of Kane's injury.
"Hopefully it is not too bad," Lloris said.
"I don't know. You know the feeling when one of your best players is going off the field.
"But we stayed strong and we finished the game in the right way."

Kane, who injured ligaments in his left ankle during Tottenham's Premier League defeat against Manchester United on Jan 13, only returned in late February, missing seven matches.
It was the third successive season the Spurs talisman has missed games due to an ankle injury.
The 25-year-old, the winner of the Golden Boot at last year's World Cup, has scored 27 goals for club and country this season.
Tottenham are fourth in the Premier League, chasing a Champions League place for next season.
England boss Gareth Southgate will also be concerned, with the Nations League Finals looming.
