LONDON • It was difficult to ignore the return of Mesut Ozil.
Arsenal's supposed marquee player was back, given his first start since Nov 11 after a back problem and a high-profile omission for "tactical reasons" against Tottenham in the League Cup on Wednesday.
The forward responded in style when he set up two goals in the 3-1 Premier League home win over Burnley yesterday, even if he was peripheral for long spells.
"Very good response. He played like we needed today," Gunners manager Unai Emery said at his post-match conference.

Premier League games it took Arsenal to go into half-time with the lead. They last did so against Huddersfield on the final day of last season.

"His skills, his commitment was very good. He helped us. I said we needed Mesut Ozil."
Given the captain's armband by Emery, Ozil was frequently buffeted by a strong and physical Burnley team and largely unable to impose his passing rhythms.
But he popped up early with a glorious pass that set up the first of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang's two goals and late on with an assist for Alex Iwobi.
It was a strangely disjointed game, even after Aubameyang put Arsenal in charge with his second at the beginning of the second half. The Gabon striker now has 12 goals in the Premier League and 14 in all competitions this season.
Despite trailing by two goals, Burnley, without an away win since September, made life difficult for Arsenal.
The game was niggly, with the always angry Ashley Barnes, who scored the away side's goal, central to much of it.
He had a tussle with Arsenal defender Sokratis Papastathopoulos, the pair tussling on the ground in the first half after they chased a loose ball into touch; Barnes was rather harshly booked.

But the Burnley striker gets his edge from playing on the edge while his team's physicality, in general, was a problem for their hosts.
"They are an aggressive team, that is clear in their game plan," Emery added.
"They are more physical than us, that is normal. But we need to adapt... We won today not because we played well but because every player had a very big commitment.
"We knew Burnley are an organised team and were going to push us... I think we controlled the match like we wanted."
The game was tense at 2-1 when the board went up to show five minutes of stoppage time.
Enter Ozil. He drove into the area and caught a break when his pass was deflected into the path of Iwobi, who made no mistake.
Henry Winter, The Times of London's chief football writer, tweeted in praise: "That's what Mesut Ozil can do, tease a ball through tight spaces. Such a gifted footballer with vision and technique... the talent is undeniable."
Following a 22-match unbeaten run, Arsenal had lost last Sunday at Southampton and again to Spurs in midweek. From their perspective, this was more like it.
For Burnley manager Sean Dyche, whose team are struggling in the relegation zone, it was just a bad day at the office.
"It wasn't a 3-1 game, I think all would agree with that. We conceded soft goals," he said on the BBC's Match of the Day.
"When you come here, you do need decisions and so many went against us. We've got to turn good performances into good results."

LONDON • Maurizio Sarri admitted Chelsea need attacking reinforcements after they wasted a chance to cement their place in the Premier League's top four with a 0-0 draw against struggling Southampton on Wednesday.
Alvaro Morata was back in the league starting XI for the first time since the defeat at Wolves on Dec 5, replacing the injured Olivier Giroud. But he fluffed two good chances and had another contentiously ruled out for offside.
Eden Hazard was twice denied by 22-year-old goalkeeper Angus Gunn, who had a top-flight debut to remember for the Saints, rejuvenated under new manager Ralph Hasenhuttl.
The Blues, the lowest scorers in the top six with only 38 goals, failed to score for the third time in their last five home league games.
The tepid and one-paced performance raised more questions about the need for a top-class striker on a day they splashed out £58 million (S$99.7 million) on Borussia Dortmund midfielder Christian Pulisic.
"The club knows my opinion. I think we need something else for our (attack)," Sarri said when asked if he would consider recalling on-loan forwards Michy Batshuayi and Tammy Abraham.
It was only last week that the Italian said he would not enter the market for a centre forward.

He made it clear the responsibility for new signings lies with owner Roman Abramovich, saying: "It depends on the board, not on me. I have to think of the training. I have to try to improve my players in the offensive phase.
"We played a good match for 80 minutes, then we were in trouble in the last 20. We have to try to solve the problem. We were in control of every match recently, but it was not easy to score the first goal."
Hazard has often been cast in the centre forward's role, with Morata scoring only seven goals this term and none in the league since Nov 4.
On his recall, the former Real Madrid star looked completely bereft of touch and confidence.
Hazard looked more vibrant back in his favoured winger role, but failed to torment the Saints once again despite having been involved in seven goals against them in the last six matches in all competitions.
While successive away wins at Watford and Palace made it a happy Christmas for Chelsea, their first home game of the new year was a lot like their last in 2018.
Despite dominating Leicester on Dec 22, they were beaten 1-0 as they failed to break down the visitors' defence.
The boos rang out at full-time as Cesc Fabregas, who came on as a 68th-minute substitute for his 500th club appearance in English football, was waving to the home fans. He wants to join Monaco this month and hopes the club can sign a replacement.
Chelsea remain in fourth on 44 points, just three ahead of Arsenal in the race to qualify for the Champions League. And they still have to visit both the Manchester clubs, Arsenal and Liverpool.

Football: Milan great Simone signs on as Ratchaburi manager in trigger-happy Thailand

RATCHABURI, THAILAND (AFP) - Former AC Milan star Marco Simone on Monday (March 25) insisted he was unconcerned by the trigger-happy nature of Thai football as he became the latest footballing great to sign up as a club manager.
The 50-year-old, unveiled as head coach of Thai League 1 side Ratchaburi, said he was undeterred by the number of high-profile managers to have passed through the country in recent years without making much of an impression.
Sven-Goran Eriksson's stint as technical director at BEC Tero Sasana lasted a matter of months back in 2012 and Avram Grant's spell at the same club was similarly brief in 2014.
Former Liverpool and England striker Robbie Fowler and ex-Spurs and Germany wing-back Christian Ziege are two more big names who have had a stab at managing Thai clubs without success.
Ziege lasted less than two months at Simone's new club, which saw three head coaches come and go in 2018, while two have already departed since the beginning of 2019.
"I don't like to talk about other people because every moment, every, match and every season is different," said Simone. "Now the club president wants to make a change but I don't like to compare this situation with the past.
"Today, the club is not the same club as it was five years ago. The club has different ambitions and they want to be bigger. As time passes, we will see if I stay one week, two months, seven months, two years, I don't know. It is a particular kind of job.
"I have a contract for this season but it's possible that after two months, the club want me to sign for two seasons or they might decide that it's not possible."
The ex-Italian international was part of the great Milan side of the 90s, playing alongside the likes of Marco van Basten, George Weah and Ruud Gullit. The striker won two Uefa Champions League winners' medals and four Serie A titles in Milan.
He would later have spells in France with Paris Saint-Germain and Monaco and his coaching career has seen him take charge at Monaco, Laval and Tours in France, while his most recent post was at Club Africain in Tunisia.
But someone with Simone's impressive playing profile but modest coaching career will find it tough to be a success in Thailand, where the lifespan of coaches can be very short.
The challenge begins when Ratchaburi host Muang Thong United in Thai league action on Sunday, and Simone will be hoping for an auspicious start to indicate that he will not be just another high-profile disappointment.

Football: Liverpool back on top as United go fourth

LONDON (AFP) - Liverpool returned to winning ways and the top of the Premier League table while Manchester United climbed into fourth place on Saturday (Feb 9) as English football paid tribute to the late Emiliano Sala.
First-half goals from Sadio Mane and Georginio Wijnaldum together with Mohamed Salah's 48th-minute effort saw Liverpool to a 3-0 win over Bournemouth at Anfield.
Victory meant Liverpool, who had been second on goal difference, leapfrogged Manchester City by three points ahead of the reigning champions' match at home to Chelsea on Sunday.
Meanwhile United's revival under caretaker manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer continued with an equally comfortable 3-0 win away to Fulham.
Liverpool had dropped points in successive 1-1 draws against Leicester and West Ham, sparking suggestions they were losing their nerve in a quest to end the club's 29-year wait to be crowned champions of England once again.

'CONVINCING' LIVERPOOL

Mane, however, eased the pressure with an early headed goal at Anfield.
Liverpool doubled their lead through Wijnaldum's delightful 34th-minute lob before Egypt striker Salah sealed victory with a curling shot.
"We knew we were not happy with our performance in the last two or three games," Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp said. "We want to play convincing football we want to perform.
"That was the reaction we wanted to show today," the German added.

In London, Paul Pogba scored two goals - including a second-half penalty - either side of an emphatic Anthony Martial strike, as United made it 10 wins in 11 game since former striker Solskjaer was put in temporary command.
Chelsea could regain a spot among the Champions League qualifying places against Manchester City.
But United, 11 points adrift of the top four when Jose Mourinho was sacked in December, are back in the hunt now.
"There are so many games left, but we hope to stay in the top four," said Solskjaer.
Arsenal inflicted more misery on Huddersfield with a 2-1 win away to the bottom-of-the-table club.
Alex Iwobi volleyed the Gunners into an early lead and Alexandre Lacazette made it 2-0 before half-time, with Sead Kolasinac's own-goal too late for the Terriers.
Elsewhere under-pressure Everton manager Marco Silva's return to Watford ended in a 1-0 defeat thanks to an Andre Gray goal.
Everton's loss was compounded when Kurt Zouma was sent off after the final whistle for complaining to referee Lee Probert.

CARDIFF CLIMB AS THEY MOURN SALA

An emotional week for Cardiff ended with a dramatic 2-1 win away to Southampton that saw them climb out of the relegation zone just days after the death of transfer-window signing Sala in an aeroplane crash was confirmed without him having played a game for the Welsh club.
The Argentinian's body was formally identified by an English coroner on Thursday, a day after it was recovered from an underwater wreckage in the Channel.
Cardiff wore special shirts embroidered with a yellow daffodil, the national emblem of Wales and the team colour of French side Nantes, Sala's former club, with a minute's silence observed prior to kick-off.
Bluebirds captain Sol Bamba's second-half volley gave Cardiff the lead only for Jack Stephens to equalise in stoppage-time.
But there was still time for Kenneth Zohore to score a 93rd-minute winner at St Mary's Stadium.
"It's been a tough couple of weeks," said Bamba. "I know Emiliano Sala was looking from up there so it's good to get the three points."
Burnley were in the relegation zone after Cardiff's win.
But they moved three points clear in a 3-1 late kick-off win at Brighton, Chris Wood scoring twice as Southampton were left in the bottom three.
London rivals Crystal Palace and West Ham drew 1-1, with Hammers captain Mark Noble scoring with a first-half penalty before Eagles striker Wilfried Zaha marked his return from suspension with an equaliser 14 minutes from time at Selhurst Park.

Football clubs' jackpot funds need strict checks: MHA

Football clubs' jackpot funds need strict checks: MHA
The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has reminded Singapore Premier League (SPL) clubs holding permits to operate jackpot machines to remain vigilant in their operations.
This comes after The Straits Times reported on Monday that a female employee from Hougang United - one of six SPL clubs running such operations - had been charged in court for allegedly misappropriating $278,200 from their clubhouse operations.
In response to ST's queries, an MHA spokesman said: "Following the fund misappropriation case at Hougang United Football Club, MHA has reminded all permit holders to be vigilant in their overall governance, processes and procedures, including maintaining accountability and checks and balances in their financial matters."
To operate fruit machines, clubs need to be granted a permit under the Private Lotteries Act, which is to be renewed annually provided a host of conditions are met.
One such condition is that clubs are required to open and maintain a separate bank account for jackpot revenue and maintain proper accounting records in that account.
Others include applying social safeguards, such as not allowing anyone under the age of 21 to enter the fruit-machine room, and installing closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras to provide continuous recording of activities in the room.
Permits issued to clubs may be revoked if there are breaches of any of these conditions.
Presently, six of nine SPL clubs - Hougang, Albirex Niigata, Balestier Khalsa, Geylang International, Home United and Warriors FC - run jackpot operations at their respective clubhouses.

  • Singapore Premier League clubs running jackpot operations at their clubhouses.

Depending on the size of their clubhouse operations, they can hold a few hundred thousand dollars in cash for winner payouts.
Clubs ST spoke to said that, in addition to applying MHA guidelines, they also have stringent standard operating procedures to prevent the misappropriation of cash, or detect it if it happens.
Home, who run 23 machines at their clubhouse at the Bishan Sports Hall, conduct regular audits and surprise checks on employees.
Said a club spokesman: "We have in place a stringent system of checks and balances such as two-factor authentication, segregation of duties and daily report requirement for cash management.
"These initiatives are complemented by regular audits as well as surprise checks conducted."
Balestier, who operate eight jackpot machines at the Toa Payoh Stadium next to the club's administration office, keep a comparatively small sum of cash for payouts.
"The cashier's safe has a maximum of only $10,000 for daily operations," said club chairman S. Thavaneson.
"If there is a request by the cashier for additional cash as a result of large payouts, the club general manger will issue additional cash after verifying the payouts during the day."
"All cash balances, payouts, cash book are checked and reconciled at the end of each working day by the general manager," he added.
"Any discrepancy is immediately investigated and either corrected or reported to management for further action."
ST had reported that Malaysian Tean Tai Tee, the Hougang employee who was arrested and charged in court with one count of criminal breach of trust for having allegedly misappropriated $278,200, can be jailed for up to 15 years, and fined if convicted.

ENGLISH PREMIER LEAGUE

Liverpool 4
Burnley 2
LONDON • It would be too simplistic to say Liverpool responded to the test of nerve set by Manchester City.
Jurgen Klopp's team have been doing that since the first day of this enthralling Premier League season.
This was a test of nerve set by Burnley, the match officials and the elements, and they delivered on all counts to return the gap in the title race to one point yesterday.
Liverpool fell behind to a controversial early goal, but ultimately ran out comfortable 4-2 victors, thanks to a brace apiece from Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mane.
They were also indebted to consistently poor defending from Sean Dyche's team, who remain too close to the relegation zone for their own liking despite causing the title contenders problems all afternoon at a wet and windy Anfield.
The challenge for Klopp's men began before Anfield had properly roused itself for the kick-off.
Ashley Westwood swung a corner into a packed penalty box and directly into Liverpool's net.

KEEPING PACE WITH CITY
At 3-1 up, all the balls Burnley got were from us. I'm completely happy with the performance, especially against Burnley. Nobody gets rid of us.
JURGEN KLOPP, Liverpool manager, on his team's come-from-behind victory after Burnley's controversial opening goal.

The small pocket of Burnley supporters erupted and so did Alisson, who was unable to leap, having been sandwiched between Jack Cork and James Tarkowski. The Reds waited for referee Andre Marriner to penalise a clear foul, but he instead sent the Brazil goalkeeper into the notebook for dissent.
It was a bad call against Klopp's team although it gave them 84 minutes to channel their grievance in the most appropriate way.
Burnley helped them along the way with several defensive lapses that squandered the major decision in their favour, with Tom Heaton the chief culprit on an afternoon to forget for the England goalkeeper.
The hosts levelled when he failed to intercept Mohamed Salah's low cross and Firmino gratefully converted the gift at close range for his 10th league goal of the campaign.
Klopp's men benefited from another error to edge ahead, with Jeff Hendrick the culprit this time.
He played Phil Bardsley into trouble and Adam Lallana blocked the full-back's clearance, diverting it to Salah inside the box. The ball then broke for Mane, who curled a fine finish to overturn Burnley's controversial advantage.
Lallana's inclusion ahead of Xherdan Shaqiri and Naby Keita was met with scepticism before the start of the game, but he provided the creativity that Liverpool's midfield has lacked in recent away fixtures.
It was his ball to Salah, who failed to score for the fifth consecutive game, that enabled the latter to subsequently cross for Firmino's equaliser and his challenge on Bardsley was also a key moment.
The cushion of a third goal came in the second half courtesy of another mistake from Heaton after his weak kick found Salah, who raced through on goal only to be halted by Charlie Taylor's precise tackle.
The left-back, however, could only steer the ball to Firmino, who prodded home his second.
It could have been a nervous finale when substitute Johann Berg Gudmundsson netted, but the Clarets' hopes of a dramatic recovery were dashed when substitute Daniel Sturridge released Mane to stroke home in added time.
Klopp felt his surprise decision to name Lallana in his line-up was vindicated as he "played a really good game" before insisting that Burnley's opener should not have stood.
The German said: "The first goal in a lot of countries would have been disallowed.
"That never helps, but it was early so that's good. We kept as calm as possible, we forced the goals with two brilliant moments of football and defended with passion.
"When it was 3-1, we did not finish it off and it was not cool. But then, we score a fourth and it's all good."

Crowdfunding saves struggling Polish club Wisla Krakow
WARSAW • When a 112-year-old Polish football club with 13 national championship titles teetered dangerously close to bankruptcy, its fans stepped in with funding.
Wisla Krakow supporters became equity investors, saving their beloved team and boosting an emerging niche capital market in the process.
They drummed up 4 million zloty (S$1.4 million) between 9,129 investors who bought 40,000 shares in less than two days earlier this year, using the Beesfund crowdfunding platform.
The fast-track fundraising has attracted other sports teams to the platform, said Beesfund chief executive officer Arkadiusz Regiec.
The clubs are adding to Beesfund's roster of clients, which before Wisla's fan-led revival included restaurants, information technology start-ups and independent breweries typical of crowdfunding operators abroad.
Beesfund estimates it may help to raise as much as 80 million zloty this year, bolstered by demand from sports teams and in contrast to a persistent lull in initial public offerings on the Warsaw Stock Exchange.
"Crowdfunding should allow to us to escape this grim time we're experiencing in Poland's capital market," Regiec said in an e-mail.
"It's a chance for people to become shareholders in businesses they understand, without intermediaries. This seems to be attractive, even if we offer pretty high-risk investments."

Football: PSG coach Thomas Tuchel hits out at Neymar after fan attack at French Cup final

FRANCE (AFP) - Thomas Tuchel on Monday (April 29) blasted Neymar for hitting a fan who insulted Paris Saint-Germain players as they filed up to collect their French Cup losers' medals.
A 28-year-old delivery driver from Nantes had been filming the PSG players and making less than flattering comments about them when a simmering Neymar grabbed the hand that held the mobile phone and shoved it towards the fan's face.
"I don't like it. You can't do that, you just can't do that," Tuchel said of the incident, which was caught on video by fans at the Stade de France.
Neymar lashed out on Saturday after his side threw away a two-goal lead to draw 2-2 with Rennes before losing the penalty shootout 6-5 after extra time.
"It's not easy to go up the steps after a defeat. It's very difficult for me, for everybody, but we have to accept it," Tuchel added.
"If we lose, we have to show respect. You can't get into a fight with a spectator."
The blow continued a bad-tempered end to the evening for PSG. Neymar's strike partner Kylian Mbappe was sent off for a dreadful tackle with two minutes left in extra time.
The defeat ended PSG's four-year reign in the French Cup and means that, while they have retained the French league title, they have won none of the cups they entered this season, with the most painful their exit at the last-16 stage of the Champions League to Manchester United.
"Did I act badly?" Neymar asked in an Instagram comment. "Yes. But no one can stay indifferent."
Neymar is now awaiting punishment from France's football authorities to go along with the three-match ban Uefa slapped him with on Friday for his foul-mouthed tirade following PSG's defeat to United.
European football's governing body sanctioned the 27-year-old after he told match officials "to go f*** yourselves" following United's 3-1 second-leg win at the Parc des Princes, won by the Premier League side thanks to a controversial penalty awarded via the video assistant referee system.

BURTON-UPON-TRENT, England (REUTERS) - Sergio Aguero scored the only goal as Manchester City beat League One (third division) Burton Albion 1-0 to secure a 10-0 aggregate victory in their League Cup semi-final on Wednesday (Jan 23).
The Argentine striker slotted home from a Riyad Mahrez cutback in the 26th minute as City set up a final clash against Chelsea or Tottenham Hotspur.
Pep Guardiola fielded a mixture of experienced and young players with Aguero, Mahrez and Kevin De Bruyne starting. He also handed a debut to winger Ian Poveda while young talents Eric Garcia and Philippe Sandler started in central defence.
City demolished Burton 9-0 in the first leg with four goals from Gabriel Jesus and solitary strikes from De Bruyne, Oleksandr Zinchenko, Phil Foden, Kyle Walker and Mahrez.

Football: Allegri to leave Juventus at end of season

ROME (AFP) - Coach Massimiliano Allegri will leave Italian Serie A champions Juventus at the end of this season, the club said on Friday (May 17).
"Massimiliano Allegri will not be on the Juventus bench for the 2019/2020 season," the club announced in a surprise development.
Allegri held meetings with the club's hierarchy earlier in the week during which a clear disagreement between the two parties emerged.
Juventus have already wrapped up their eighth consecutive title, and Allegri's fifth in as many years since replacing Antonio Conte in 2014.
Despite signing Cristiano Ronaldo from Real Madrid last summer, the Bianconeri failed to make it past the quarter-finals of the Champions League for the second successive season.
They were humiliated by modest-spending Ajax in the last eight of the competition in April, despite a star-studded side including Ronaldo, Argentina's Paulo Dybala and France World Cup winner Blaise Matuidi.
Allegri guided Juve to two European finals - losing to Barcelona in 2015 before being hammered by Real Madrid two years later.
Wales midfielder Aaron Ramsey has already signed for the Italian club on a free transfer from Arsenal for next season.
Allegri and club president Andrea Agnelli will hold a press conference on Saturday at 2pm (8pm Singapore time).

Football: Scotland slump to humiliating 3-0 defeat in Kazakhstan

ALMATY, KAZAKHSTAN (AFP) - Alex McLeish refused to quit as Scotland manager after their Euro 2020 qualifying campaign got off to a "horrible" start with a humiliating 3-0 defeat against Kazakhstan on Thursday (March 21).
The Kazakhs, ranked 117th in the world, struck twice inside 10 minutes through Yuriy Pertsukh and Yan Vorogovskiy to leave an under-strength Scotland shell-shocked in the Group I clash in Nursultan.
McLeish's men secured the safety net of a playoff to qualify via the Nations League in November and already that looks like their only realistic route to a first major tournament in 22 years as Baktiyor Zainutdinov's terrific header made it 3-0 six minutes into the second half.
It was one of the most embarrassing results in Scotland's history and McLeish admitted his players had paid the price for their woeful start.
"It was horrible. They hit us with two blockbusters," McLeish said. "It was disappointing not to see a great reaction from that.
"At half-time we tried to change it a wee bit to see if we could unsettle Kazakhstan, but they were very sharp on the night.
"It's a sore one. The facts are that we were beaten by a team ranked lower than us.
"On paper, we should win but I think you have to give Kazakhstan a bit of credit for the way they played." Scotland have a painful history of falling victim to shock results against the game's minnows, but Kazakhstan are the lowest ranked nation to beat Scotland.
In terms of the misery inflicted only a 1-0 defeat against Lithuania in a European Championship qualifier in 2003 and a 1-0 loss to Costa Rica in the 1990 World Cup compare to the Kazakhstan shocker.
A draw against the Faroe Islands in 2002 was another low point, as were the 1978 World Cup draw with Iran and a 4-0 thrashing by Norway in 2009.

McLeish to battle on

When it was put to McLeish that it could be enough to cost him his job, the former Rangers boss vowed to fight on.
"I'll just continue doing my job and suffice it to say I'm not going to get drawn into that question," he said.
"It possibly puts more pressure on me. We have introduced a few new names over the last year or so and it can take time, but I know we don't have time." Asked if the loss was the worst of his career, McLeish added: "I don't really rank defeats. I just feel in terms of losing then I have to bounce back.
"I always feel low after a defeat but I'm pretty good at bouncing back." Without captain Andy Robertson and the highly-rated Kieran Tierney, McLeish was forced to name Graeme Shinnie in an unfamiliar role at left-back, and the Aberdeen skipper was exposed for both the first two goals.
Scotland looked longingly for an offside flag that never came as Pertsukh ran onto a long ball over the top and fired high past the helpless Scott Bain.
The visitors never recovered and Shinnie was caught ball-watching as Vorogovskiy was picked out by Islambek Kuat's pass to slot past Bain again.
Kazakhstan scored just six goals and failed to win a game in their entire qualifying campaign for the 2018 World Cup.
However, they had half that goal tally and the three points sewn up before the hour mark when Scott McKenna was outjumped by Zainutdinov, who directed his header across Bain into the bottom corner.
Scotland were also without Ryan Fraser and Charlie Mulgrew, who were not selected in agreement with their clubs due to the plastic surface the match was played on.
Bouncing back with victory away to San Marino on Sunday (March 24) is now imperative for Scotland to have any chance of automatic qualification from Group I by finishing in the top two.
But with Russia and World Cup semi-finalists Belgium also in the six-team group, Scotland already have a mountain to climb.

VALENCIA (REUTERS) - Spain captain Sergio Ramos scored another "Panenka" penalty to give his side a 2-1 home win over Norway on Saturday (March 23) in their opening Euro 2020 qualifier but it was a far from convincing display from Luis Enrique's side.
Spain made a slick start and took the lead at Valencia's Mestalla stadium when Rodrigo Moreno volleyed in Jordi Alba's cross from close range in the 16th minute and continued to dominate proceedings without carving out many clear chances.
Norway, who had done little in attack, levelled in the 65th minute with a perfectly-taken penalty from striker Joshua King, who blasted the ball beyond David de Gea after Inigo Martinez had hauled Bjorn Johnsen to the floor.
Spain earned a spot-kick of their own six minutes later when Alvaro Morata was tripped by Norway goalkeeper Rune Jarstein, who Ramos easily deceived by chipping the ball down the middle of the goal to score a "Panenka" for the fifth time this season and eighth in his career.

Football: Chelsea beat Brighton 3-0 to bolster Champions League hopes

LONDON (REUTERS) - Goals from Olivier Giroud, Eden Hazard and Ruben Loftus-Cheek and an impressive first Premier League start by Callum Hudson-Odoi earned Chelsea a 3-0 win over Brighton and Hove Albion on Wednesday (April 3), boosting their chances of a top-four finish.
The comfortable victory from the home side, which moved Chelsea fifth and level on points with Arsenal above them, also eased pressure on coach Maurizio Sarri after some fragile recent performances.
Local boy Hudson-Odoi, who last month made his first start for England but has struggled to feature for Chelsea, created the opener when he crossed for World Cup winner Giroud to score with a flick of the outside of his boot in the 38th minute.
Belgium's Hazard made it 2-0 on the hour when he collected a pass from Loftus-Cheek and curled a shot from the edge of the box past Mat Ryan. Three minutes later, Hazard repaid the favour, feeding Loftus-Cheek to fire home.
The 18-year-old Hudson-Odoi, who has been courted by Bayern Munich and the object of keen interest at home and abroad, proved lively and influential throughout the match. "Callum now is ready to play every match and also the most difficult matches because he has improved a lot throughout the season," Sarri said.
"It's impossible to be at the top when you are 18 so he can improve, he needs to improve and then he can become one of the best players in Europe." Sarri also singled out fellow Academy graduates Loftus-Cheek and Danish defender Andreas Christensen as players who are making their mark.
"They are at the moment very important players but the potential is there so in the future they can become top players. I think for this team the future can be good," he said.
"Sometimes it is difficult to keep young players because when they are under 18 they can sign only for two years." Chelsea overtook Manchester United to sit fifth in the Premier League on 63 points, level with Arsenal who have a game in hand, and one point behind Tottenham Hotspur in the chase for places in next season's Champions League.
Brighton, fighting to avoid being dragged into the relegation fight, remain 15th, five points above the drop zone.

BRITAIN (REUTERS) - Aston Villa beat Midlands rivals West Bromwich Albion 4-3 on penalties to reach the Championship playoff final on Tuesday (May 14) after the tie ended 2-2 on aggregate.
Tammy Abraham, on loan from Chelsea, scored the decisive spot kick to send Villa into a Wembley final against either Derby County or Leeds United with a lucrative spot in the Premier League up for grabs.
Villa won the first leg 2-1 at home but Craig Dawson's first-half header levelled it up for West Brom.
The hosts had Chris Brunt sent off with 10 minutes of normal time remaining but they managed to hold out in the face of a Villa siege to get through extra time and into a shootout.
Keeper Jed Steer put Villa in control with great saves from Mason Holgate and Ahmed Hegazi.
Albert Adomah could have sealed it for Villa but lifted his kick over the bar and when James Morrison scored for West Brom it piled the pressure on Abraham, but the young striker found the back of the net to spark celebrations.

Football: Portugal draw a blank against Ukraine on Ronaldo's return

LISBON (REUTERS) - Defending champions Portugal were held to a 0-0 draw at home by Ukraine in their opening Euro 2020 qualifier on Friday (March 22) as Cristiano Ronaldo returned to the team for the first time since the World Cup.
Ukraine's veteran goalkeeper Andriy Pyatov kept Portugal at bay with several fine saves in the first hour before the hosts ran out of ideas in the Group B game.
Portugal had an early goal chalked off when William Carvalho's header was ruled offside and defender Pepe then produced an impressive volley which the 34-year-old Pyatov did well to turn over.
Ronaldo, left out of the Nations Cup matches in the autumn by mutual consent with coach Fernando Santos, then sprang into action as he twice got free on the left.
First he cut inside his marker and produced a snapshot which Pyatov saved with his legs and shortly afterwards he opted to go outside Serhiy Kryvtsov and fired in a low, left-foot shot which the goalkeeper again stopped.
The Ukraine captain saved his best for the 56th minute when he brilliantly turned away Andre Silva's goalbound shot with a one-handed save.
With Bernardo Silva repeatedly dribbling into dead-ends, Portugal began to lose composure as both Joao Cancelo and Ronaldo sent wayward crosses straight into touch.

Portugal then had a let off when Rui Patricio blocked Yevhen Konoplyanka's shot - Ukraine's only effort on target in the match - and debutant Junior Moraes saw his shot from the rebound blocked.
A late chance went begging for Portugal when substitute Rafa Silva missed his kick after a low Ronaldo cross found him in the area.

Football: Manchester City retain Premier League title after 4-1 away win at Brighton

LONDON (AFP) - Manchester City retained the Premier League title in style on Sunday (May 12), holding their nerve to come from behind against Brighton and see off a charging Liverpool after a thrilling campaign.
Pep Guardiola's team thumped Brighton 4-1 away to finish on 98 points - the second-highest total in Premier League history - as Liverpool beat Wolves 2-0 at Anfield to finish a single, agonising, point adrift.
City, who strung together 14 league wins at the end of the season, are the first side to retain the title since their bitter rivals Manchester United managed the feat in 2009, and remain on course for the first domestic treble in English football history.
This is City's fourth Premier League title and sixth overall in England's top flight, tying them with Chelsea and Sunderland. Only Manchester United (20), Liverpool (18), Arsenal (13), Everton (nine) and Aston Villa (seven) have more league titles.
But Guardiola's team of aristocrats did not have it all their own way on a day of drama on England's south coast, in keeping with an astonishing season in which the lead switched hands time after time.
Liverpool drew first blood on Sunday, with Sadio Mane striking in the 17th minute to put them mathematically top of the table and on course for their first English top-flight title since 1990, before the Premier League era even started.
City fans' nerves were shredded even further when Glenn Murray put Brighton in front from a corner in the 27th minute, resulting in a huge roar at Anfield.

But those cheers were quickly muted, with Guardiola's side level just 83 seconds later, Sergio Aguero staying onside and keeping his cool to finish after a brilliant ball from David Silva.
Ten minutes later, the unmarked Aymeric Laporte rose to head in Riyad Mahrez's corner to complete the turnaround for City.
Guardiola's side continued to dominate at the start of the second half and were rewarded when Mahrez smashed in a third goal with 27 minutes to go.
Ilkay Gundogan then blasted home a free kick to put the result beyond doubt.
City broke a host of Premier League records in romping to the title last season, becoming the first team in English top-flight history to reach 100 points and finishing a record 19 points clear of closest rivals Manchester United.
This term has been a totally different campaign, with Guardiola's men forced to dig deep to see off the relentless challenge of Liverpool, who lost just one Premier League game all season.
The champions had ground out a number of 1-0 victories in recent weeks, showing they have added steel to their style.
The outcome was cruel on Liverpool, whose points tally is the third-highest in Premier League history.
Jurgen Klopp's side travelled to face City at the Etihad in January with the chance to open up a 10-point lead but the defending champions won 2-1 in what turned out to be the pivotal match of the campaign.
Liverpool suffered a blip in late January and February, when they were held to a series of draws, but they found their form again and relentlessly harried City, finishing with nine straight league wins.
Klopp's team will have to put the disappointment behind them as they prepare to face Premier League rivals Spurs in the Champions League final in Madrid on June 1.
City captain Vincent Kompany said this Premier League title win had been the "hardest" he had experienced.
"Back to back... I think it was the hardest, most tough Premier League ever," he told Sky Sports. "Liverpool were exceptional. I don't meant to rub it in, it is what it is, they didn't deserve to lose.
"It makes me so much more happy that we played such a great team all season. We had our backs to the wall, we won at the Etihad and today we were able to stay in front."
Asked if he was aware of the score at Anfield when Liverpool scored early on, Kompany said: "Honestly, I didn't know. We heard the Brighton fans singing '1-0 to Liverpool' just at the moment we conceded so we knew then but we've done it before.
"We were creating chances, finding the gaps, imposing ourselves. Though the pitch was slow I felt we were magnificent. We did everything we needed to do in a game such as today."
Kompany said City would now focus on next week's FA Cup final and the prospect of an unprecedented domestic treble.
"It's a combination of a great group of players, great staff and our incredible desire to over-achieve," he said. "Because we've got such a good team over-achieving is difficult but we're looking forward to the FA Cup final now, that would be unprecedented.
"We'll go and celebrate but we're also thinking of that next game on Saturday."
Elsewhere on the final day of Premier League action, Tottenham made mathematically certain of a place in the top four, drawing 2-2 against Everton.
Arsenal beat Burnley 3-1 while fellow Europa League finalists Chelsea were held to a goalless draw at Leicester.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's Manchester United finished their season with a whimper, losing 2-0 at home to relegated Cardiff.
There were also wins for Crystal Palace, Newcastle and West Ham. Southampton and Huddersfield drew 1-1.

Manchester City held off a titanic challenge from Liverpool to become the first side in a decade to retain the Premier League title by coming from behind to beat Brighton 4-1 on Sunday.
