Sacked Mourinho heading back to Madrid?
MADRID • It may be only five days since Jose Mourinho's sacking by Manchester United, but the Portuguese could be back in management sooner rather than later.
Spanish daily El Pais has reported that Real Madrid president Florentino Perez is considering a reunion with his former coach.
With the Spanish giants still reeling from Zinedine Zidane's departure, having sacked his replacement Julen Lopetegui in October and then appointing the inexperienced Santiago Solari, some Spanish media reports have said Perez could be tempted to bring Mourinho back.
The Portuguese, who was sacked by United on Tuesday, was with Real between 2010 and 2013, winning the LaLiga title with a record 100 points, scoring 121 goals, as well as lifting the Copa del Rey.
It was also reported that an "internal survey" has shown that the team believe Mourinho can steer Real back in the right direction following their tumble this season.
Although Solari has led Real to 10 wins in 12 games since succeeding Lopetegui, the team have faced plenty of criticism for some insipid recent performances. They have fallen five points behind leaders and bitter rivals Barcelona in the LaLiga title race.
While Spanish sports newspaper Marca dismissed the speculation about a Mourinho return, reporting that Real's club directors are not thinking about hiring him "in the short term or in the long term", that did not stop their colleagues in the media from grilling Real captain Sergio Ramos on Friday.
The Spaniard was forced to bat away questions about a Mourinho return at a press conference ahead of yesterday's Club World Cup final against United Arab Emirates side Al Ain.
"Mourinho left us five years ago yet everyone keeps talking about him. People need to show more respect to the coach we have now," the exasperated Ramos said.
"I'm not the person who decides which coach comes here or doesn't, some people seem to think that the captains decide which coach Real Madrid appoints."
Another of Mourinho's former clubs Inter Milan are also said to be eyeing his signature after Luciano Spalletti's failure to take them to the Champions League knockout stages this term, while British tabloid The Sun said that the 55-year-old could be set for a shock move to Wolverhampton.
Meanwhile, United forward Alexis Sanchez has denied rumours that he made a bet with teammate Marcos Rojo about Mourinho's sacking, reported the BBC.
It was said that Sanchez told Rojo to pay him £20,000 (S$34,731) after the axing materialised, a story which he called "false".

Real Madrid They say you should never go back. However, Mourinho has shown in the past that such an adage is one he has no time for, demonstrated by his return to Chelsea for a second stint after departing Real Madrid in May 2013.

LONDON (AFP) - Manchester United proved on Sunday (Jan 13) that their recovery under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is no flash in the pan, with Marcus Rashford pouncing to seal a 1-0 win in a thrilling contest against Tottenham.
The two sides went toe-to-toe in an open game but while both teams had multiple chances, United goalkeeper David de Gea proved the difference, making a string of phenomenal saves.
Interim manager Solskjaer has installed Rashford as his number one striker and was richly rewarded when the 21-year-old scored the decisive goal in the 44th minute.
Paul Pogba sparkled for United, engaged in a personal duel with Spurs goalkeeper Hugo Lloris for periods of the second half.
United's victory is their fifth successive Premier League win under their temporary manager in a contest seen as his first major test since he took over from the sacked Jose Mourinho last month.
Earlier, Mauricio Pochettino's Tottenham settled quickly into their fluid passing game at Wembley, enjoying the bulk of possession.
They went close to taking the lead when Harry Winks, seemingly unsure whether to shoot or cross, fired the ball across the face of the United goal after being played in by Son Heung-min.
Minutes later the visitors had a chance to take the lead when Ashley Young's cross fell to Jesse Lingard, who fired over from the corner of the six-yard box.
United, with Lingard, Anthony Martial and Rashford racing forward at every opportunity, looked dangerous and Martial forced Lloris into a smart low save with his legs.
The game lost a little of its frantic intensity midway through the first half.
Kane poked the ball into the net after being set up by Dele Alli but it was ruled out for offside.
Moussa Sissoko pulled up sharply with an apparent hamstring injury and although he returned to the pitch he was unable to continue, being replaced by Erik Lamela.
The decisive moment in the match came shortly before half-time.
Lingard cut out a careless cross-field ball from Kieran Trippier and nudged the ball to Pogba, who had time to look up and measure a raking cross-field pass to Rashford, racing down the right.
Rashford still had plenty to do but kept his nerve to fire right-footed past Lloris and into the far corner - Lloris got fingertips to the ball but was unable to keep it out.
Pogba, whose relationship with Mourinho had deteriorated sharply, looks rejuvenated under Solskjaer - he has been involved in eight goals under the interim boss, with four goals and four assists.
Tottenham came out of the blocks smartly after the restart and Kane looked certain to level from close range but De Gea saved brilliantly with his left foot before pulling off a fine save to deny an Alli headed effort.
Ashley Young sent over an inviting cross that Pogba headed straight at Lloris and the Spurs goalkeeper had to be alert to tip over another Pogba effort that came at the end of a long spell of United possession.
Spurs, roared on by a passionate home crowd, were building up a head of steam and Alli had a golden chance to equalise but De Gea was again equal to the task, saving with his legs.
The Spaniard produced yet another stunning save to keep out Toby Alderweireld before flying to his right to cling on to a Kane free-kick.
Spurs had further chances in a frenetic ending but could find no way past De Gea.
The win lifts United to level on points with fifth-placed Arsenal and six behind Chelsea, currently in the fourth and final Champions League spot, but Spurs remain nine points behind leaders Liverpool.

Football: AC Milan's Higuain poised for Chelsea move - report
MILAN (AFP) - AC Milan striker Gonzalo Higuain has "agreed terms" and is set for an imminent move to Premier League club Chelsea, Italian sports daily Gazzetta Dello Sport reported on Wednesday (Jan 9).
Higuain joined Milan on a season-long loan from Juventus in July with an option to buy but has struggled to settle at the San Siro, scoring eight goals in all competitions.
And the 31-year-old Argentina international wants to join former Napoli coach Maurizio Sarri at the English club which would take over his 36 million euro (S$55.9 million) buy-out clause.
"Chelsea have an agreement with Higuain to take him immediately," Gazzetta reported.
Higuain had his most successful season under Sarri, breaking the Serie A goalscoring record with 36 goals in the 2015/16 campaign.
He scored 91 goals during his three years at the club before moving to Juventus in 2016 on a 90 million euro deal.
He previously spent six years at Real Madrid before starting his career at River Plate in Argentina.
Higuain had been hampered by a back injury earlier in the season but broke his two-month goal-scoring drought before the winter break.
Milan's sporting director Leonardo however warned on Tuesday he had to get down to work.
"He had a tough moment, he has to put it behind him and get to work," said Leonardo.
"A goal can change things, but if he is to continue here, he needs to take on responsibility." Brazilian Leonardo added: "There's no point following rumours and gossip.
"He is here right now. Seeing as he is here, he needs to get down and actually do something for this team."

Football: Man United legends thrash Bayern in 1999 charity rematch
LONDON (AFP) - Ole Gunnar Solskjaer tormented Bayern Munich once again as the Manchester United manager scored in his club's 1999 treble winners' reunion on Sunday (May 26).
Twenty years after Solskjaer scored the last-gasp winner that helped Alex Ferguson's side beat Bayern in the Champions League final, the current United boss joined his old team-mates for a charity match against the Germans at Old Trafford.
Solskjaer again started on the bench as he did in the Camp Nou final, but he wasted little time after coming on for Andy Cole, turning home the opener after Dwight Yorke was denied.
With Ferguson back in the dugout as manager for the day, there was a feelgood factor in the air at Old Trafford for United's 5-0 win after a troubled season for the current generation.
It was the first time Ferguson, 77, had managed a United team since his retirement in 2013.
He sat with ex-England boss Steve McClaren, his assistant 20 years ago.
The reunion match, in aid of the Manchester United Foundation, was also the first time Ferguson had been on the pitch since undergoing major surgery after suffering a brain haemorrhage last May.
Rolling back the years, David Beckham was firing cross-field balls, Jaap Stam showed no mercy at the back and Paul Scholes bossed the midfield.
Â
Â
They faced a star-studded Bayern squad that included Lothar Matthaus, Stefan Effenberg, Sammy Kuffour and Carsten Jancker from the 1999 starting lineup, as well as former Manchester City defender Martin Demichelis.
Solskjaer went off midway through the first half and skipper Peter Schmeichel followed suit shortly after Dwight Yorke scored a superb second for United Legends.
Thanks to their two late goals against Bayern, United remain the only English club to win a treble made up of the Premier League, FA Cup and Champions League in one season.
As the latest man charged with trying to engineer a return to those glory days he was such an integral part in, Solskjaer's efforts were greeted with enthusiasm by a crowd in excess of 60,000.
Popular as he is, the reception for Solskjaer was eclipsed by the one afforded to Beckham.
The former England skipper, 44, sold to Real Madrid in 2003 after a fall-out with Ferguson, got a standing ovation every time he went to take a corner.
Changes aplenty punctuated the second half rather than goals, with Stam, Scholes and Denis Irwin among those to be replaced to rapturous applause.
Nicky Butt netted United's third of the afternoon 11 minutes from time as he coolly stabbed home a Louis Saha cross.
Saha, one of the handful of non-treble winners playing for United, slotted home the fourth in the 85th minute as he turned home a Jonathan Greening cross.
In a fitting finale, Beckham got behind the Bayern backline and showed quick feet before firing home in front of the Stretford End, leaving Ferguson wreathed in smiles and the crowd on their feet in delight.

European minnows want bigger portion of pie
European minnows want bigger portion of pie
ZURICH • For the 80 teams who qualify for the group stages of European club football, the season starts with a glitzy party at the draw ceremony in Monaco and ends with millions of extra euros in the bank.
But while those clubs cash in on the riches produced by the Champions League and, to a lesser extent, the Europa League, more than 600 top-tier clubs who fail to qualify have to feed off leftovers.
Amid widespread concern that the financial gap between Europe's elite clubs and the rest is still growing, Uefa is being asked by the continent's domestic leagues to alter the way it distributes the huge revenue from its competitions.
European Leagues, its umbrella organisation, says in a report that it wants the unlucky 600 to get a larger slice of the cake.
Uefa's club competitions are expected to rake in €3.25 billion (S$5.1 billion) this season but the manner in which that money is distributed has become increasingly contentious. The 32 Champions League teams will share €2.04 billion, with Europa League participants receiving €510 million.
Only 7.3 per cent (€237.5 million) will be distributed in so-called "solidarity payments" and split between the remaining 600 clubs.
The report, which has been sent to Uefa and the continent's 55 national associations, said this was down from 8.5 per cent in the previous cycle from 2015 to this year.
"The financial gap between participating clubs and non-participating clubs is increasing, creating a negative effect on competitive balance," it warned, pointing out that the percentage was more relevant than absolute amounts.
The report proposed that the solidarity payments be increased to 20 per cent in the next cycle, which will cover the period 2021 to 2024.
Based on an estimated revenue of €3.3 billion a season, it said this would provide €660 million for those who missed out on European competition. Breaking down the figures further, it proposed that 3.5 per cent (€116 million) be distributed among clubs eliminated in qualifying rounds and 10 per cent (€330 million) to clubs who did not qualify at all.
The European leagues also want 6.5 per cent of total revenue to go into a new pillar which would be used to fund professional football development outside the top five countries.
Uefa is expected to decide on revenue distribution by the end of the season. Aleksander Ceferin, president of the governing body, has said his priority is to improve competitive balance.
But he also acknowledges that the big clubs are responsible for the lion's share of the revenue and has admitted it is a difficult subject.

Football: Owner Roman Abramovich still passionate about Chelsea, says David Luiz
LONDON (REUTERS) - Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich is still passionate about the Premier League club and tries his best to be involved on a daily basis despite his long-term absence at Stamford Bridge, defender David Luiz has said.
Russian billionaire Abramovich ran into problems renewing his British visa last year amid tensions between the two countries and he has not been seen at Chelsea's matches this season.
British media reports indicated Abramovich had grown weary and even looked to sell the club but Luiz said the 52-year-old had not lost his hunger for success after speaking with him prior to renewing his Chelsea contract last week.
"I had the opportunity to talk with him last week to decide my future," Luiz told The Daily Mail. "He loves the club and everything that is inside the club, not just the people. He wants to win everything, he wants to do more.
"It's difficult for him, he has been away but his heart is here. He tries to be involved every single day. He's still really passionate for the club. He has the same hunger, thinking about winning. He doesn't want to lose energy.
"He's the one who built Chelsea - everything at Chelsea changed because of him. The results speak for themselves, 15 trophies in 15 years."
Chelsea finished third under Maurizio Sarri to return to the Champions League and Luiz said the London club has exceeded pre-season expectations as they look to finish the campaign with a Europa League trophy when they face Arsenal in Baku on May 29.
Â
"We did amazing, especially with the first year for a new coach," Luiz said. "Nobody expected Chelsea to finish third. Everybody thought we were going to be out of the Champions League.
"We're fighting for the Europa League and we lost the League Cup on penalties, a competition where we beat Liverpool and Tottenham and were the better side against Manchester City in the final."

Ronaldo frustrated as Atletico grab late 2-0 win
MADRID • Cristiano Ronaldo's gesticulations were borne out of frustration.
The persistent jeering by the Atletico Madrid faithful had been expected on his first visit to the Wanda Metropolitano stadium since leaving cross-town rivals Real Madrid for Juventus in the summer.
But all he had to show to the baying home fans was a five-fingered taunt to signify his five Champions League trophies as Juventus slumped to a 2-0 loss in the first leg of their last-16 tie on Wednesday night.
The seven-time defending Italian champions splashed out €100 million (S$153.5 million) on the Portuguese star forward in the hope that he would help them end 23 years of hurt in Europe's top club competition.
Instead, Ronaldo and Co are on the brink of elimination at the very first hurdle in the knockout stages.
Juventus were kept at bay by Atletico's rearguard before Diego Simeone made a shrewd tactical move with a triple attacking substitution - Angel Correa, Thomas Lemar and Alvaro Morata - after the break.
The breakthrough came in the 78th minute when Jose Gimenez scored after Morata's knockdown from a corner by Lemar.
Five minutes later, Diego Godin doubled their lead following a free kick, giving his team a huge advantage ahead of the March 12 return leg.
The Spanish LaLiga club have now kept a clean sheet in all three of their Champions League games against Juventus.
And they are unbeaten in their last 12 home matches in the knockout stages.
And Simeone, who provocatively celebrated Gimenez's opener by placing his hands over his groin, was delighted at how his players "represented the true meaning of Atletico".
Claiming he "felt the need to do it (the gesture)", the Argentinian said: "It wasn't aimed at the other team. Doing what we have done over these years is not easy, and today, we did it again."
While Simeone will be without Diego Costa and Thomas Partey through suspension in the second leg, he will be confident of repelling Juventus, who will not be able to call on the banned Alex Sandro in Turin.
Atletico are aiming to reach this season's final, which will be held in their stadium, and lift their maiden European Cup.

MANCHESTER, United Kingdom (AFP) - Pep Guardiola said both Manchester City and Liverpool deserve to win the Premier League title after his side brushed aside Manchester United 2-0 on Wednesday (April 24) to top the table again.
Bernardo Silva and Leroy Sane struck for the visitors in 12 second-half minutes at Old Trafford to inflict a seventh defeat in nine games on United, who remain three points adrift of the top four.
Guardiola's City have 89 points after 35 games, with Liverpool a point behind. Both sides have just three games remaining.
"I understand the pressure we have and obviously here at Old Trafford with Marcus Rashford and Jesse Lingard running behind," the City boss told Sky Sports.
"I told them we needed to play to win, it doesn't matter if we concede.
"Now, we go to Burnley and we know how tough it will be. It's important to be calm. We are still not champions with three gaurgesmes left - it's incredible with the points we have and Liverpool have.
"I told the players don't read tomorrow, don't watch the television, just rest and sleep a lot and go in there against Burnley."
Â
"Both teams deserve the title," he added.
"But it can be just one. The team that is going to lose can't have regrets because they have given everything. Normally, with this kind of victory, you can it enjoy it the most, but we have to be calm."

Football: Tottenham's Eric Dier ruled out until 2019 after having appendix removed
(REUTERS) - Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Eric Dier will miss the their festive fixtures after undergoing surgery to remove his appendix, the English Premier League club said on Sunday (Dec 16).
Dier, who was an unused substitute in Tuesday's Champions League clash against Barcelona, missed Spurs' 1-0 league victory over Burnley on Saturday, with what was initially described as a "virus" by manager Mauricio Pochettino.
"The England international midfielder was diagnosed with appendicitis after contacting our medical staff due to acute abdominal pain," Spurs said in a statement.
"He received immediate treatment to assess and then remove the appendix. He will now undergo a period of recovery before commencing rehabilitation and it is expected he will return to training with the squad in January."
That rules out Dier from Wednesday's League Cup quarter-final clash against local rivals Arsenal, along with league games against Everton, Bournemouth and Wolves in the last week of December.
Dier has scored two goals in 13 league appearances this season for Spurs, who are third in the standings behind champions Manchester City and Liverpool.

Football: Firmino hat-trick takes Liverpool nine points clear with Arsenal thrashing
Football: Firmino hat-trick takes Liverpool nine points clear with Arsenal thrashing
LIVERPOOL (AFP) - Liverpool roared back from a rare Anfield deficit to move nine points clear at the top of the Premier League as Roberto Firmino's hat-trick inspired a 5-1 thrashing of Arsenal on Saturday (Dec 29).
Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane were also on target as Liverpool's front three all scored in the same league game for the first time this season.
Liverpool had trailed at home in the league for the first time in a day short of a year when Ainsley Maitland-Niles turned home Alex Iwobi's excellent cross 11 minutes in.
However, the lead lasted just three minutes as Firmino profited from some calamitous Arsenal defending to level and then left Shkodran Mustafi and Sokratis Papastathopoulos on the floor to score his second goal in three minutes.
Mane and Salah's penalty had the game wrapped up by half-time and Firmino completed his hat-trick from the spot as Jurgen Klopp's men extended their unbeaten league start to 20 games and took another significant step towards a first league title since 1989/1990.
"The reaction was obviously absolutely brilliant," said Klopp.
"We haven't conceded too many goals this season, especially the first one, so you don't know what the reaction would be."
Manchester City now trail the pace setters by 10 points and, even if they reduce that lead to seven with victory at Southampton on Sunday, the champions need to end Liverpool's invincible season so far when the sides meet on Thursday at the Etihad to get back in the title race.
However, Klopp repeated his plea of recent weeks for his players not to get carried away.
"We never thought about that," he said of Liverpool's nine-point advantage.
"It's a supporters and journalists game, but we cannot be a part of it."
Â
Tottenham's title ambitions suffered a huge blow as Wolves scored three times in the final 18 minutes to win 3-1 at Wembley earlier on Saturday to further embolden Anfield with belief before kick-off.
"For sure Tottenham's result people out there reacted, but not inside the dressing room where they were completely concentrated on the match and not allowed to have that influence our game," added Klopp.
That confidence could have been shaken when after a bright Liverpool start, it was Arsenal who led when Iwobi's teasing cross perfectly dissected Alisson Becker and Virgil van Dijk, to leave Maitland-Niles with an open goal.
But after a slow start, Salah, Firmino and Mane are beginning to show the form they did last season in smashing a combined 91 goals.
Firmino didn't even have to look at the ball when he slotted the equaliser into an empty net after Sokratis's attempted clearance rebounded off Mustafi into his path to quickly level.
However, the Brazilian did all the hard work himself two minutes later by jinking through Arsenal's hapless central defensive pairing before drilling low past Bernd Leno.
"It's a difficult moment for us," said Arsenal boss Unai Emery, whose side could slip five points adrift of the top four if Chelsea win at Crystal Palace on Sunday.
"We spoke in the dressing room, it is another experience for us, but from bad experiences you learn."
Mane made it 3-1 on 32 minutes when Salah cushioned a cross perfectly into the Senegalese's path to side-foot high into the net.
And Liverpool were given the chance to extend their lead just before half-time when Salah tumbled under pressure from Sokratis in the box.
Leno got a touch to the Egyptian's spot-kick but couldn't stop Salah moving level with Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Harry Kane as the Premier League's top scorer on 13.
Salah gave up the chance to move clear in the race for the golden boot when Sead Kolasinac pushed Dejan Lovren 25 minutes from time and Firmino gratefully fired home the penalty much to his manager's delight.
"Mo Salah gave the penalty to Bobby and I almost cried because we all know how much Mo wants to score goals," added Klopp.
"It was one of the nicest things I've ever seen in my life, just outstanding. So far the gesture of the season."

Football: Kean scores for Juventus despite racial abuse but Bonucci says forward partly to blame for inciting crowd
MILAN (AFP) - Rising Italy star Moise Kean was targeted by racist abuse after he scored for Juventus on Tuesday (April 2) - but teammate Leonardo Bonucci blamed him for inciting the crowd at Cagliari.
Goals from 19-year-old Kean and Bonucci gave Juve a 2-0 victory over Cagliari that took them closer to an eighth consecutive Serie A title.
Kean slotted in his fourth goal in as many league games in the 85th minute after Bonucci nodded in the opener on 22 minutes in Sardinia.
The youngster's celebration after scoring, however, infuriated the home crowd, who had jeered the teenager throughout after he was booked for diving in the first half.
Kean, along with his French teammate Blaise Matuidi and Brazilian Alex Sandro, were targeted by monkey noises throughout the match, but they increased in intensity after the second goal.
The Juventus teenager celebrated with his hands outstretched in front of the Cagliari fans after scoring, but Bonucci claimed that Kean should not have provoked the home supporters and said his teammate was partly to blame.
"Kean knows that when he scores a goal, he should celebrate that with his teammates. He knows he could have done something differently too," he told Sky Sport Italia.
"There were racist jeers after the goal, Blaise heard it and was angered. I think the blame is 50-50, because Moise shouldn't have done that and the Curva (Cagliari fans) should not have reacted that way.
"We are professionals, we have to set the example and not provoke anyone."
Cagliari fans appeared to throw objects at Kean, and the match was momentarily stopped and an appeal made over the stadium speakers.
Former Paris Saint-Germain player Matuidi appeared furious at the jeers at the same stadium where he was targeted last season.
The abuse came on the day that Uefa president Aleksander Ceferin said he was "ashamed" by the recent outbreak of racist abuse and vowed to ask referees to stop matches in the future if racist chanting breaks out.
Juventus coach Massimiliano Allegri called for the culprits to be identified and banned.
"As usual, there are some idiots, but also normal people," Allegri said. "We have cameras, we identify and ban them."
Cagliari president Tommaso Giulini, however, blamed Kean for stirring up tensions and said criticism of his club's supporters was "self-righteousness".
"If (Federico) Bernardeschi had done what Kean did, the reaction would have been the same," said Giulini.
"Nobody had heard anything up to that point. Kean made a mistake, he's 19, that's understandable," he added, saying he "mostly heard whistles".
"There is a drift towards self-righteousness that I don't like, this club has always been exemplary and has always denounced racist behaviour."
The win put Juventus back 18 points clear of second-placed Napoli, who travel to lowly Empoli on Wednesday, with only eight matches to play.
The champions' next game is at home against AC Milan, who were held 1-1 by Udinese.
Juventus shrugged off the absence of star duo Cristiano Ronaldo and Paulo Dybala, with Mario Mandzukic also out suffering from flu.
Cagliari goalkeeper Alessio Cragno denied Kean twice before the teenager finally broke through, scoring from Rodrigo Bentancur's pass.
Kevin Lasagna grabbed a point for Udinese to further dent Milan's Champions League ambitions.
Polish striker Krzysztof Piatek managed to break through just before the interval after connecting with a Patrick Cutrone cross.
But Italian international Lasagna pulled Udinese back level after finishing off a flowing counter-attack on 65 minutes.
The stalemate complicates the Champions League race for Gennaro Gattuso's side, who are targeting a return to the competition for the first time since the 2013-2014 season.
They are fourth, in the final Champions League spot, but Lazio are four points behind with two games in hand ahead of their trip to struggling Spal on Wednesday.
"In a season a team can have highs and lows. We had five wins in a row and now we've a bad moment," said Gattuso.

ABU DHABI (REUTERS) - Almoez Ali scored with a spectacular overhead kick for a record ninth goal of the Asian Cup to set Qatar on their way to a first continental title with a stunning 3-1 win over four-time champion Japan on Friday (Feb 1).
Ali's early goal took him past Ali Daei's 1996 tally and, combined with a 27th-minute strike from Abdulaziz Hatem and a late Akram Afif penalty, helped the Qataris make an emphatic statement ahead of their hosting of the 2022 World Cup.
Sudan-born Ali's record goal came after a protest by the host United Emirates FA into his eligibility to represent Qatar was dismissed by the Asian Football Confederation only a few hours before kickoff.
Japan finally found a way through a Qatar defence that had not conceded in six previous matches when Takumi Minamino scored in the 69th minute but the penalty condemned the Samurai Blue to their first defeat in an Asian Cup final.
The victory was celebrated wildly by thousands of Omanis who had turned out to support Qatar in the absence of their own fans, who were unable to travel because of a deep political rift with the UAE.
"Today we made history for our country, we need to be very proud about our achievement," said Qatar coach Felix Sanchez.
"This is one step more towards be ready for 2022 and represent Qatar as a very competitive team at the World Cup."
Japan, chasing a record-extending fifth title, started the brighter but it was the Qataris who drew first blood through the prolific Ali, who was later named Player of the Tournament.

Afif has set up most of Ali's goals in the UAE and he was again the provider in the 12th minute with a cross that found the striker in space with his back to goal close to the penalty spot.
There was still plenty of work to do but Ali took a touch off each foot to tee up the ball before angling it past Shuichi Gonda into the corner of the net with a bicycle kick.
The Afif-Ali combination nearly struck again a minute later but the Qataris did not have to wait long to double their lead.
Hatem, who scored the winner against South Korea in the quarter-finals, summoned up another magnificent strike, cutting in from the right before curling the ball past the helpless Gonda into the top left-hand corner.
The Japanese, who had weathered a first-half storm before beating Iran in the semi-finals, kept their composure but were simply unable to break through the compact lines of Qatar's defence.
Japan skipper Maya Yoshida clashed heads with Boualem Khoukhi on the hour mark, resulting in the big Qatari defender being carried off on a stretcher.
The Qatar defence looked less assured without him and Japan took full advantage when Yuya Osako played in Minamino and the winger chipped the ball over advancing goalkeeper Saad Al Sheeb.
Japan poured forward looking for an equaliser but, after reference to VAR, Yoshida was adjudged to have blocked Abdelkarim Hassan's header with his hand in the 80th minute and Afif calmly sent Gonda the wrong way from the spot.
"Our goal was to win the title, and so I'm disappointed and regretful we could not bring the Cup home to the Japanese people," Japan coach Hajime Moriyasu said.
"I always think the winning team is better so in that sense they were."

Revitalised Zidane raring to go again for Real
Revitalised Zidane raring to go again for Real
MADRID • Zinedine Zidane stood for 29 minutes fielding questions on Monday, but all of them really came down to two: Why now? And, what next?
Santiago Solari had been sacked as coach of Real Madrid and, in his place, Zidane returned on a three-year deal, 284 days after he left the club with three straight Champions League trophies in tow.
On May 31 last year, sitting next to Real president Florentino Perez, the Frenchman had said the team would not keep winning with him in charge and "needed a change".
But they looked lost without him, first under sacked Spain coach Julen Lopetegui and then Solari, who watched on as Real's season went up in smoke in six days.
The Argentinian's exit was inevitable, but the idea any suitable replacement would take over for 11 LaLiga games, with nothing to preside over except the aftermath of a crisis, seemed fanciful.
Real's distress call was, however, too great for Zidane to resist.
"When the president called me, the first thing I thought was, 'Go'," said the World Cup winner.
Which begs the question: what has changed? Rest may have refreshed motivation, particularly for Zidane, who revealed he had "never been far away".
The 46-year-old has stayed in Madrid, attending a handful of matches, while three of his sons still play for the club.
For him, the move back might have been less of a leap than it seems from the outside.
Yet the greatest lure may be that the team have been failing. For the best coaches and players, there is always self-belief, a sense that no problem is too big to solve.
Zidane knew he would return with more authority than before, despite his previous exploits.
The suspicion then was that he was just a popular face to keep the ship steady while star players engineered their own success.
As two coaches came and went, his stock rose with every chance missed, every seat left empty and every point Barcelona gained.
"I returned because the president called me. I love him and I love this club," he said. "I left the club because I needed it, for me, though at the time the club did not.
"After eight months, I want to coach again. For now, we just have to focus on what's left of the season and then see what we can do for the next years.
"We will change things, for sure, for the years to come."
Although Zidane could have waited until the close season, the job might not have been available.
However, former Real president Ramon Calderon told Sky Sports that despite Jose Mourinho's eagerness to have another crack at the hot seat, the club's "dressing room leaders" were against his return.
The Spaniard added: "He left a lot of problems and he would have been another problem to the ones we already have if he had come."
And those problems are aplenty despite Perez's boasts of a "new glorious era" after ushering in Zidane.
The latter will begin his new reign under no illusion even though Spanish daily AS has declared he will have "unprecedented power" at the Bernabeu, with full control over all aspects of the team.
Last term, Barcelona romped to the LaLiga title 17 points ahead of Real and the gap is already 12 with more than two months left.
With the Independent claiming Zidane has been given a £300 million (S$533 million) spending war chest and AS reporting he has been promised "three superstar signings", the challenge for him is to find the balance between reform and revolution.
Gareth Bale is understood to be less than enthused by his return, and that feeling is mutual, with Spanish football expert Guillem Balague telling BBC Sport Zidane "does not want to work with him", so a summer parting appears likely.
That could pave the way for Chelsea forward Eden Hazard, who by then will have one year left on his deal, with The Daily Telegraph saying yesterday that Real have already made an approach.
Paris Saint-Germain's strike duo of Neymar and Kylian Mbappe have also been touted, and Perez told reporters on Monday he "would like them both".
However, there will be no return for another prodigal son after the Spaniard nixed the idea of re-signing Juventus' Cristiano Ronaldo, who left Madrid for Italy last July after a nine-season spell, insisting he is "fine where he is".

PROGRESSO, Argentina (AFP) - The death in a plane crash of Cardiff City striker Emiliano Sala was a cruel blow to family, friends and supporters in his home village in Argentina, and on Saturday (Feb 16) they came, grieving, from miles around to pay their respects.
Through the morning, mourners gathered for a public vigil in a gymnasium in Progreso, the small farming town in Santa Fe province which Sala left as a teenager to play in Europe.
He was “loved and admired by all,†a restaurant owner told AFP. Sala would come home on breaks and would never fail to kick the ball around with village youngsters, they said. Unlike some soccer stars, he would keep a low profile, not flaunting his new wealth.
As his heartbroken father, mother and sister watched on Saturday, a giant poster of the 28-year-old hung behind his coffin, which was draped in the red and white colors of the San Martin de Progreso club where he began his career.
Sala’s father, Horacio, was devastated by his son’s death, family members said, and refused for days to leave his home.
Outside the club, which was at the center of the day’s commemorations, was a banner reading: “Emi, you will never walk alone.â€
“He represented a lot for us,†the club’s president, Daniel Ribero, told AFP.Â
“We’re a small village and Emi was a celebrity, the only player to turn professional.
“He was one of us. He meant a lot to us.†More than 3,000 mourners came to pay respects.
“We all carry Emi in our hearts,†said Mayor Julio Muller in an emotional tribute.
Sala had played for Nantes, becoming one of the top strikers in France, before being traded in January to Cardiff City in England’s Premier League in a 15 million pounds (S$26 million) deal.
Just two days after making the move, Sala had flown back to Nantes on Jan 21 to pay farewell to his former teammates.
On the return flight across the English Channel, the single-engine private plane carrying Sala and pilot David Ibbotson crashed near the British island of Guernsey.
Sala reportedly had messaged friends from the plane, flying in rough weather, that he was “so afraid†and that the craft “seems like it’s falling to pieces.â€Â
Â
Â
Â
The player’s body was recovered from the submerged wreckage on Feb 7 but 59-year-old Ibbotson remains missing.
Thousands of supporters – including French soccer star Kylian Mbappe and former England captain Gary Lineker – had donated a total of more than US$400,000 (S$540,000) to pay for a private sea-bottom search after authorities had given up hope of finding the plane.
An inquest in England later concluded that the footballer died of “head and trunk injuries.â€Â
Cardiff City manager Neil Warnock and club executives Neil Warnock and Ken Choo traveled to Argentina to attend the ceremony on Saturday.
“It was important for us to come and pay the respect to the family,†Warnock said. “People tell me, ‘He never played for you,’ but he was my player, I signed him, we had two or three conversations and he told me he would score the goals to keep Cardiff in the Premier League.â€Â
Representing Nantes, for whom Sala scored 42 goals in 120 league appearances, were defender Nicolas Pallois and general secretary Loic Morin.
Argentine President Mauricio Macri sent his condolences via Twitter.
Before joining the Nantes side in 2015, Sala had played with Bordeaux and Orleans, gaining a reputation as a prolific scorer.
Sala’s former team paid tribute to him in a French league match Sunday. Each player wore a special all-black kit for the occasion, with the Argentine’s name in large white letters on the back of each jersey.
In Progreso, Mayor Muller said that for the modest farming town there would now be a “before and an after†Sala.
One mourner, Miguel Angel Pereira, 68, made the 70km journey from Santa Fe to pay his respects on Saturday.
“I wanted to be here. I was a San Martin player myself in the 1960s,†he said.
Following the memorial ceremony, Sala’s body was to be cremated.

Irving sends teaser with July 1 remark
Irving sends teaser with July 1 remark
LOS ANGELES • Kyrie Irving, who could become a free agent at the end of the season, finished with 23 points, 10 rebounds and six assists as the Boston Celtics won 113-99 at the struggling New York Knicks.
Friday's National Basketball Association contest came just one day after the Knicks traded injured Kristaps Porzingis to the Dallas Mavericks, which will give New York the funds to go after top free agents this summer.
And the Madison Square Garden home fans made their feelings known, giving Irving a loud ovation when the line-ups were announced and chanting, 'We want Kyrie!' in the third quarter.
"It's nothing but a distraction at this point," said Irving, who was born in Melbourne, Australia, but grew up in New Jersey.
"I'm appreciative of the fan support I get in any arena," he said. "Obviously what's going on in terms of that noise and commentary is just a bunch of nonsense right now."
The Knicks fans' admiration might be misdirected as he already made a point at a Celtics' fan event last year, telling the crowd he would re-sign with Boston.
But when asked after the game if his mind has changed about remaining a Celtic, he said: "Ask me July 1."
Marcus Morris added 18 points for the Celtics, who won for the eighth time in nine games.
Damyean Dotson scored 22 points and Kevin Knox had 21 for the hapless Knicks, who lost a team record 13th straight home game.
They also lost their 12th straight game after losing 24 of 27 games over December and last month.
In Thursday's multi-player deal, the Knicks gave up Porzingis, Tim Hardaway, Courtney Lee and Trey Burke to the Dallas Mavericks and received Dennis Smith, DeAndre Jordan and Wesley Matthews, plus two future first-round picks.
The Knicks' new players were not available, so they started Dotson and Kadeem Allen as guards.
In Denver, the Nuggets nearly kept the red-hot James Harden to under 30 points as they beat Houston 136-122 to end a nine-game losing streak against the Rockets.
At the Pepsi Centre in Colorado, Nikola Jokic had 31 points and 13 rebounds while Malik Beasley (35) and Torrey Craig (22 off the bench) had career highs for Denver, who last beat the Rockets in 2015.
Denver played without their starting back court. Jamal Murray missed his fourth straight game with a sprained left ankle and Gary Harris was out with a right adductor strain.
Harden scored 30 points to stretch his streak to 25 games of scoring 30 or more but needed a late three to keep the streak alive.
The NBA's Most Valuable Player had a difficult night; during one stretch, he missed 10 of 11 shots and four free throws as he finished nine of 21 from the field.
