Football: Diaz future in his hands not City's, says Guardiola
MANCHESTER, United Kingdom (AFP) - Manchester City will be unable to do anything to keep highly-regarded midfielder Brahim Diaz if he decides to join Real Madrid the English champions manager Pep Guardiola said on Saturday (Dec 29).
The 19-year-old Spain Under-21 international has been in discussions over a move to the European champions, having become frustrated by a lack of first-team opportunities at the Etihad Stadium.
If the move goes through, it would be the second time in 18 months that City has lost a talented young player who has become frustrated at not playing.
Jadon Sancho left City for Borussia Dortmund in 2017, and has since gone on to make 29 Bundesliga appearances and win three full England caps.
Guardiola claimed he was not aware of how far discussions had progressed between City and Real over Diaz, but a deal is expected to go through in the coming days for a player who is out of contract at the end of the season.
"I don't have any new information on that," said Guardiola at Saturday's press conference on the eve of their match with Southampton.
"I know they are in conversation, but I don't have any new information about the situation. Today (Saturday), he trained with us.
"I was clear last week when I spoke about it. We do everything to keep them (the young players) but they decide."
Guardiola takes his City team to Southampton looking to end a disappointing run of results, with his side dropping to third place in the Premier League after losing three of their past four matches.
The City manager said he saw it as his responsibility to lead the team back to form as they attempt to catch leaders Liverpool, after the disappointment of consecutive defeats against Crystal Palace and Leicester.
"It is a big challenge for me; I have to show whether I'm good or not," he said.
"I wouldn't say I like the situation but I know it's common in football and I like to handle it.
"I will help them and assist them to help each other and we will come back who we are. We will move forward."
City have struggled in the absence of holding midfielder Fernandinho, who missed the defeats by Crystal Palace and Leicester because of injury, and who remains doubtful for the Southampton game, even though he has returned to training.
Guardiola insists he has no plans to change his mind and buy players in January, repeating a statement he made in November.
"I think the answer was clear two times," he said.
"It is still the same."
The manager said he tried to sign cover for Fernandinho before the start of the season, but was thwarted because his targets could not be persuaded to come to the club.
"We tried in the summer but the players don't want to come. What can we do?
"We wait until the end of the window but it didn't happen."
Former Real Madrid striker Predrag Mijatovic criticised Gareth Bale for lacking leadership qualities and hit out at coach Santiago Solari after the club's La Liga title ambitions were dented by Thursday's 2-2 draw at Villarreal.

Football: Fandi Ahmad plays down SEA Games rule of two overaged players as he focuses on improving U-22 side
SINGAPORE - An age restriction rule tweak has given him more options, but national Under-22 football coach Fandi Ahmad stressed his priority is to develop the current crop under him as they attempt to win Singapore’s first SEA Games gold.
The football tournament became exclusively an U-23 event in 2001 and this was lowered to U-22 for the 2017 edition in Kuala Lumpur.
But this year’s host, the Philippines, has adjusted the criteria to allow the 11 countries to include two overaged players for the Nov 30-Dec 11 Games.Â
This directive was recently communicated to the Football Association of Singapore through the Singapore National Olympic Council.
While Fandi could draft senior Lions like national captain Hariss Harun (age 28), forward Faris Ramli (26) or veteran goalkeeper Hassan Sunny (35), he said that with more than seven months to go, he has yet to decide which, if any, areas need strengthening.
“Very importantly, we need players who can understand the way we want to play, how we defend and attack,†said Fandi, 56.
“Everything is still open, and we don’t really see an area that is weakest or strongest (in the U-22 team) at this point.â€
His immediate focus, he added, was to raise the levels of his Young Lions team, who beat Hougang United last Sunday for their first win of this season’s Singapore Premier League.
Â
Last month, Fandi’s U-22 charges also participated in the 2020 AFC U-23 Championship qualifiers and produced some encouraging performances. They beat Mongolia and drew with North Korea and Hong Kong to finish second in their group, although it was not enough to secure qualification for next year’s finals in Thailand.
Over 29 editions of the biennial SEA Games, the Republic’s best showing in football are three silvers in 1983, 1985 and 1989 – all of which Fandi featured as chief goal-getter.
Regarding the new overage rule, Fandi also cautioned against over-emphasising its importance.
Not only could the organisers decide to scrap it at the last minute, he might also not get the players he wants, citing past scenarios involving the Asian Games.
Its football tournament switched to an U-23 category in 2002 – with teams allowed three overaged players – but, like the SEA Games, both competitions are not sanctioned by world governing body Fifa.Â
This means it is not compulsory for professional clubs to release their players for the Games.
At the 2014 Incheon Asiad, then Singapore coach Aide Iskandar took senior players Hassan, Baihakki Khaizan and Afiq Yunos to South Korea.
Afiq was a third-choice pick after key midfielders Hariss and Shahdan Sulaiman were not released by their clubs.
The presence of seasoned pros among young players can be a boost, noted national midfielder M. Anumanthan, who was an U-23 player in Incheon.
The 24-year-old said: “They (Hassan and Baihakki) brought maturity and stability to the team.
"They used their knowledge and experience to teach us how to deal with moments of pressure and uncertainty.â€
2011 SEA GAMES Our U-23 team, which includes 16 players from the 2009 SEA Games bronze-winning team, has begun its preparations for the SEA Games in Palembang, Indonesia, where our target is to qualify for the final having won the bronze medal in 2007 & 2009.

Football: Unbeaten Brunei DPMM aim to continue momentum against Balestier Khalsa in Singapore Premier League
SINGAPORE - The early Singapore Premier League title talk had revolved around the usual suspects; defending champions Albirex Niigata, local powerhouses Home United and Tampines Rovers, as well as big spenders Hougang United.
But midway through the first round of fixtures, only overlooked Brunei DPMM remain unbeaten - even after tough games against Home (1-0), Albirex (0-0) and Tampines (2-1).
DPMM coach Adrian Pennock told The Straits Times: "Nobody were talking us pre-season but there can always be surprises in the league and Balestier (Khalsa, their opponents on Saturday, April 13, at the Bishan Stadium) are also third now on merit.
"They are good going forward and we need to show up if we are to get a positive result and keep this run going.
"Momentum is so important in a league season. Albirex had a fantastic unbeaten run throughout 2018 to win the league and hopefully ours will continue on Saturday."
Former Belarus international Andrei Varankou has started well with three goals as Pennock has successfully integrated him and the other two new imports - Australian midfielder Blake Ricciuto and English centre-back Charlie Clough - alongside DPMM's long-serving locals.
Pennock, 48, took over on Dec 1. The Englishman said: "It is important we got the right people and characters in the team. The imports we got from 30 trialists from all over the world are excellent, and the locals have just been these honest players who want to learn.
"My job was first to get them fit, strong and organised and work on team spirit and bonding."
His side are tactically flexible (able to switch between three or four at the back) and also mentally resilient (DPMM played with 10 men for 40 minutes against Albirex after Najib Tarif was sent off).
Balestier will be no pushovers despite having lost their captain and goalkeeper Zaiful Nizam. He ruptured his Achilles' tendon and will be out for about four months.
Tigers coach Khidhir Khamis will have to rely on the untested duo of Zacharial Leong and Faris Danial during the Singapore international's absence.
Khidhir said: "Zaiful is an integral part of how we play and his absence is a big blow on and off the pitch, but we have a squad ready to take up the responsibility of leading and rallying each other until he returns."
Balestier have scored eight goals after five league games - behind only Tampines who have managed 12 - with forwards Sime Zuzul and Kristijan Krajcek a threat and 19-year-old Daniel Goh impressing on the right wing.
Khidhir said:"We had a short pre-season, so we are still a work in progress. But I have been pleased with the players' willingness to accept change from a soak and strike strategy to more expansive football.
"We still need to improve in terms of intensity and how we attack and defend. The players are responding in training and we will be a much better side as the season goes along."

United, Spurs, Juve and Inter ready to heat up ICC Singapore
United, Spurs, Juve and Inter ready to heat up ICC Singapore
Now into its third year in Singapore, the International Champions Cup (ICC) is set for its most exciting edition yet with Serie A heavyweights Juventus and Inter Milan, and English Premier League (EPL) giants Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur confirming their participation yesterday.
The pre-season tournament for Europe's top football clubs will be played in Singapore's National Stadium, it was announced at an event at the Incubator, near the Padang.
The Red Devils will take on Inter on July 20 and a day later, the Old Lady of Turin will meet Spurs.
Legends from the clubs - Dwight Yorke (United), Francesco Toldo (Inter), Fabrizio Ravanelli (Juventus) and Teddy Sheringham (Tottenham) were present at the launch.
Sheringham said: "There is nothing like seeing the teams in the flesh. And with no distraction of other big tournaments (in Europe), hopefully all the big players will be on show for our Asian fans."
With no World Cup and European Championship played in the summer, the stage is set for a galaxy of stars to play in Singapore, apart from the South American players involved in the Copa America.
That means the clubs' top players, like Cristiano Ronaldo (Juventus), Ivan Perisic (Inter), Marcus Rashford (United) and Harry Kane (Spurs) could all feature under Kallang's floodlights.
And United's visit will be particularly exciting to their large fan base here. The club last played in Singapore in 2001, when a side that featured Roy Keane, David Beckham and even goalkeeper Fabien Barthez playing up front defeated a Singapore Selection side 8-1, with then-Lions striker Indra Sahdan scoring for the hosts.
And even before the ICC kicks off in July, the banter between the former players had already started.
"Inter love hot weather, it's a pleasure for us to be here. It's (the heat) not an issue for us," Toldo said.
That prompted Ravanelli to reply: "We are different from Inter because we (Juventus) are always at the top. We are constantly expanding tactically but we also want to improve our knowledge and understanding of this part of the world."
In 2017, when the ICC first came to Singapore, Bayern Munich, Chelsea and Inter Milan were the elite clubs that were invited.
Last year, Arsenal, Atletico Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain were the teams that battled it out.

Football: Aguero penalty gives Man City 1-0 win over West Ham
MANCHESTER, England (REUTERS) -Sergio Aguero's penalty gave champions Manchester City a 1-0 win over West Ham United at the Etihad Stadium on Wednesday (Feb 27) to stay a point behind Premier League leaders Liverpool.
The decisive moment came in the 59th minute when Felipe Anderson was ruled to have brought down Bernardo Silva and Aguero coolly slotted home from the spot.
Former City manager Manuel Pellegrini set his West Ham team up to frustrate the hosts and they did an excellent job for most of the game, forcing City into wide areas where they struggled to create openings.
City camped in the visitors' half for the opening 45 minutes with David Silva going close to breaking the deadlock when he hit the post after an excellent low cross.
West Ham went close after the break when substitute Manuel Lanzini found Andy Carroll at the back post, but City keeper Ederson did well to parry the forward's well-struck effort.
City boss Pep Guardiola promptly threw on Raheem Sterling and Bernardo Silva from the bench and they changed the tempo and flow of the game.
Second-placed City have 68 points while leaders Liverpool are on 69.

Football: Guerreiro double give Dortmund 2-0 win over Monaco
MONACO (REUTERS) - An under-strength Borussia Dortmund deepened AS Monaco's season-long misery on Tuesday (Dec 11) with a 2-0 away victory that ensured they finished top of Champions League Group A ahead of Atletico Madrid.
The victory took Dortmund on to 13 points and meant they won the group thanks to a better head-to-head record against the Spaniards, who drew 0-0 at Club Bruges.
Raphael Guerreiro got both goals for the Germans, the first when he tapped in following a fine counter-attack with a quarter of an hour gone and the second two minutes from time when he curled a shot into the top corner from around 10 metres out.
It was another fine performance by Dortmund, who even without several of their rested regulars extended their season's record to 17 wins, four draws and just one defeat in all competitions.
Monaco, who were destined to finish bottom of the group even before the game, suffered their 14th European match without a win and ended the group in last place with just one point, five points behind Bruges.

Football: Morata double keeps Atletico's title hopes alive
MADRID (AFP) - Alvaro Morata's first-half double fired 10-man Atletico Madrid to a 2-0 victory at Real Sociedad on Sunday (March 3) as Diego Simeone's men kept their slim La Liga title hopes alive.
The Spain international striker scored twice in three first-half minutes as Atletico cut the gap to leaders Barcelona back to seven points after the reigning champions' 1-0 Clasico win over third-placed Real Madrid on Saturday.
Midfielder Koke was dismissed just after the hour mark, but Atletico have now won three straight league games after back-to-back defeats by Real Betis and Real Madrid last month had ended an 18-match unbeaten run.
After a slow start to the contest, Morata gave Atletico the lead on the half-hour mark by nodding home after Thomas Lemar's corner was flicked on by Diego Godin.
The 26-year-old, who went four games without a goal after joining on loan from Chelsea in January, made it three in two matches shortly afterwards, having opened his Atletico account last weekend against Villarreal.
Once again it was a set-piece that did the damage, as Morata climbed highest to meet Koke's right-wing free-kick with a downward header into the bottom corner.
Sandro Ramirez nodded over as Sociedad started the second half strongly, and the hosts were given renewed hope when Koke was sent off for a second yellow card in the 62nd minute.
Mikel Merino came close to halving the deficit with 14 minutes remaining as away goalkeeper Jan Oblak had to produce a fine save to prevent his header from finding the top corner.
But Atletico closed out the win to move five points clear of city rivals Real, and more importantly, remain in with a chance of lifting a first major trophy since winning the league title in 2014.
Earlier on Sunday, little Getafe gave their hopes of qualifying for a maiden Champions League campaign a massive boost with a 2-1 victory at fellow European hopefuls Real Betis.
Pepe Bordalas' side, who have twice played in the Europa League before, now sit two points clear of Alaves in fourth place in La Liga, with another seven sides within nine points of the last Champions League spot.
Real Betis remain seventh, but six points adrift of Getafe.
Uruguayan defender Leandro Cabrera gave Getafe a 20th-minute lead by nodding in Francisco Portillo's corner, before Jaime Mata slotted in a second on the stroke of half-time.
Former Spain winger Joaquin, 37, gave Betis hope with a powerful drive 15 minutes from time, but the home side slipped to a second damaging defeat in three days after their Copa del Rey semi-final loss to Valencia.

LEICESTER, United Kingdom (AFP) - Newcastle took a huge step towards securing their Premier League survival as Ayoze Perez sealed a 1-0 win against Leicester on Friday (April 12).
Rafael Benitez's side moved 10 points clear of the relegation zone thanks to Perez's first half header at the King Power Stadium.
Newcastle's first away league win since December ended a run of four games without a victory which had threatened to drag them into the relegation dogfight.
They should be assured of maintaining their top-flight status after a difficult season tarnished by Benitez's discontent over a lack of backing in the transfer market from controversial owner Mike Ashley.
"It's massive for the team. You have to give credit to the players who worked hard," Benitez said.
"We were playing against a good team. We needed to do almost everything perfect and we were close. It's easier with this commitment from players." Amid rumours he might not be in charge next season if Ashley won't promise more investment, Benitez added: "We have to have a team who can compete.
"This city, the club has potential. It's massive. I'm not looking to spend £200 million, but doing the right things.
"You can do everything right with your tactics, but the other team has one player that can make the difference."
Leicester remain seventh after a first home defeat for boss Brendan Rodgers since his move from Celtic in February.
Salomon Rondon almost gave Newcastle the lead midway through the first half with a ferocious 30-yard free-kick that cannoned back off the woodwork.
Leicester went close when Ben Chilwell exchanged passes with James Maddison before hitting a low strike that Martin Dubravka kept out.
Miguel Almiron spun away from the Leicester defence and forced Leicester keeper Kasper Schmeichel into action with a powerful effort.
Harvey Barnes was a constant threat for Leicester and he surged past two defenders for a shot which Dubravka was equal to.
But it was Perez who broke the deadlock in the 32nd minute as the Spanish winger met Matt Ritchie's cross with a glancing header that flashed over Schmeichel.
Perez wasted a good chance to double Newcastle's lead early in the second half when he volleyed wide from Rondon's cross.
Almiron fared no better after Fabian Schar carried the ball out of Newcastle's defence and picked out his team-mate with a superb pass that demanded a better finish than the hurried shot that cleared the crossbar.
The last time Leicester won a Premier League game in which they trailed at half was in October 2015 against West Bromwich Albion.
Foxes boss Brendan Rodgers would have settled for even a draw as time ticked away, but Barnes could only head across goal from Chilwell's cross.
Perez was denied by a fine save from Schmeichel in a frantic finale.
Leicester striker Jamie Vardy had struggled to penetrate Newcastle's well-drilled defence and when he finally got a sight of goal he misfired, lifting his shot over from Youri Tielemans' pass.
The last opportunity for a Leicester leveller came and went in stoppage-time when Tielemans appealed in vain for a penalty after going to ground when a cross reached him at the far post.

Football: Own goal helps Ireland edge Gibraltar 2-0 in Euro qualifying
DUBLIN (REUTERS) - Ireland had an own goal by Joseph Chipolina and an injury-time header by substitute Robbie Brady to thank for a 2-0 win over Gibraltar in their Euro 2020 Group D qualifier on Monday (June 10).
The Irish came into the game unbeaten at the top of the group following a 1-1 draw away to Denmark on Friday and, though they dominated possession throughout the match, they had a hard time hitting the target at the Aviva Stadium.
Striker David McGoldrick caused the visiting defence all sorts of problems and it was his 27th minute shot that Chipolina deflected into his own net to give Ireland the lead.
The home side created plenty of chances, with McGoldrick coming closest to doubling their advantage with a shot that hit the post before Brady stooped to head home in stoppage time.
Denmark had no such problems in Copenhagen, with Kasper Dolberg netting either side of a Christian Eriksen penalty and Yussuf Poulsen and substitute Martin Braithwaite also getting on the scoresheet in a resounding 5-1 win over Georgia.
Ireland have 10 points after four games with Denmark second on five from three. Switzerland, who finished fourth at the weekend's Nations League finals, are third on four points after two games with Georgia on three and Gibraltar bottom with none.

Our focus not on City, says Klopp
LONDON • Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp savoured his first league victory over Manchester United and then insisted the Reds were not obsessing over Manchester City, staying solely focused on winning the English title for the first time since 1990.
The Reds' 3-1 Premier League home win against United on Sunday, their first in nine league attempts, sent them back to the summit. Defending champions City had temporarily occupied that position, having defeated Everton on Saturday.
Klopp's men can increase their one-point lead at Wolves on Friday, a day before City host Crystal Palace, and he revealed his side were not distracted by things beyond their control.
"We ignored it (City taking top spot) completely. I didn't mention it one time," he said. "We played tonight against United, and not United and City.
"When we eat and train together, we are not saying, 'Did you see what City did?'.
"We cannot change the results of other teams and we cannot be champions in December.
"There will come a moment in the season where we are still around them, and we start hoping they drop points or whatever.
"We meet them on Jan 3 (in the league) and then we will think about them."
Â
Â
Â
His side made it six successive league victories and extended their unbeaten start to 17 games. Xherdan Shaqiri's late double gave them the three points after Jesse Lingard had cancelled out Sadio Mane's opener.
Klopp said: "A brilliant start, one of the best performances we've had since I'm at Liverpool.
"The first half hour was outstanding. We scored only one but I don't think anyone expected to score four or five times against this United team.
"How we played was just perfect, we tried to pass in the right areas, we played in behind the lines and was just good."
Liverpool's title challenge is being supported by their strength in depth. Shaqiri's influence from the substitutes' bench was critical following Divock Origi's late winner against Everton in their previous home league game.
Shaqiri scored within three minutes, again seven minutes later, made 17 passes and created another chance. But the Swiss needed two deflections, off Ashley Young and Eric Bailly, to take his tally to five league goals for the term.
"I cannot keep players happy. You are happy or not happy, you understand it or you don't understand it," Klopp said of rotating his squad.
"I think the boys understand it. That's how it is."

Iran and Iraq will meet in Dubai on Wednesday to decide who tops Group D in a repeat of their combustible quarter-final of 2015, which Iraq won on penalties.
Iran, looking to end a 43-year title drought since last winning Asian football's most coveted prize, could have scored four or five but for some poor finishing in Abu Dhabi.
"It's a pity our performance didn't produce a couple more goals," Iran coach Carlos Queiroz told reporters.
"But winning is the best medicine in football. To win two games and score seven goals - I have to praise my players because I am very demanding."
Saman Ghoddos and Mehdi Taremi went close for Asia's top-ranked team before Azmoun rose to head home a Ghoddos cross after 38 minutes.
The Rubin Kazan forward lashed in his third goal of the tournament from the edge of the box 20 minutes from time to give Iran a record ninth successive first-round victory dating back to 2007.
Co-favourites with South Korea to lift the Asian Cup, Iran crushed war-torn Yemen 5-0 in their opening Group D game.
They were indebted to goalkeeper Alireza Safar Beiranvand for a courageous save from Nguyen Cong Phuong, but were otherwise barely ruffled by the South-east Asian champions.
"We just need to relax more," said Queiroz. "In the second half our anxiety to score a third goal led to some bad passes."
Queiroz singled out Azmoun, who came out of international retirement for the Asian Cup.
"He's a finisher," said the Portuguese, now in his eighth year as Iran coach.
"We have high hopes for him for this competition. But the way the team is contributing around him, and our movement in the last third, are very interesting."
In Sharjah, 18-year-old Ali scored a wonderful solo goal to put Iraq 1-0 up after 11 minutes, although questions must be raised of the Yemeni defence.
Pouncing on a loose back pass, Ali held off three defenders before rifling his shot past Jalal Hassan in the Yemen goal.
Bashar Resan doubled Iraq's lead midway through the first half when his deflected shot drifted in off the upright with Hassan slow to get across.
Ali hit the post in one of the rare highlights of the second half before Alaa Abbas struck in injury time, finishing sharply after Ahmed Yaseen's header into his path.

Sealey was the first goalkeeper who refused to leave the pitch during an English League Cup final. But, unlike Kepa Arrizabalaga, Sealey's actions against Sheffield Wednesday in the 1991 final was for a worthy cause.
The Englishman suffered a badly gashed knee with 12 minutes remaining and United's then physio Jim McGregor told him there was no way that he would be able to carry on playing.
At the time, there was no reserve goalkeeper on the bench which meant that one of the outfield players had to replace Sealey in goal.
Sealey refused to come off and won the argument with McGregor. He conceded no further goals, but John Sheridan's 37th-minute strike was enough for Wednesday to lift the Cup with a 1-0 victory.
Swansea were leading 1-0 when goalkeeper Fabianski injured himself in a collision with Tottenham striker Vincent Janssen in the 81st minute of an English Premier League match in 2017.
Then Swans manager Paul Clement told reserve custodian Kristoffer Nordfeldt to get ready, but Fabianski insisted he was fine and play resumed. When Clement decided to replace Fabianski in the 86th minute, the Pole refused.
After continued remonstrations, Clement cancelled the change, and Jon Moss - coincidentally the referee in charge of Sunday's League Cup final between Chelsea and Manchester City - waved play on.
In the end, Fabianski bizarrely conceded three goals in the final minutes as the Swans lost 3-1.

Football: Fandi Ahmad rues missed chances in U-22s' 1-1 draw with Hong Kong in opening AFC Under-23 qualifier
SINGAPORE - It was encouraging that his team struck back immediately after falling behind, but Singapore's 1-1 draw with Hong Kong in the Asian Football Confederation Under-23 Championship qualifier on Friday (March 22) still left a sour taste in coach Fandi Ahmad's mouth.
The national Under-22 side carved out chances but were not clinical enough to make them count in their opening Group G game at the MFF Football Centre in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia.
"We are quite disappointed with the result," Fandi, 56, lamented.
"I thought we could have won the game because we had more chances. We had good shots at goal, but the goalkeeper saved or we hit the post."
The Singaporeans dominated most of the game, creating a host of chances from their passing moves but were unable to find the net.
In the 29th minute, captain Joshua Pereira arrived at the far post to meet midfielder Hami Syahin's cross from the right, but he blasted over the bar.
Then in the 42nd minute, striker Ikhsan Fandi broke clear of the defence - only for the goalkeeper to deny him.
Against the run of play, Hong Kong defender Tsui Wang Kit scored in the 52nd minute.
But, within a minute, Fandi's men equalised through centre-back Lionel Tan, who netted from close range after fellow defender Irfan Fandi had headed on Hami's 53rd-minute free kick. Hami also saw one of his crosses rebound off the post in the second half.
On the wasted opportunities, Fandi added: "In the first half alone, we created three chances. In terms of chances, we created more than them. They had one or two, but we had a mistake amongst our defenders and they scored a goal.
"But we kept going at them. It's a very, very tough game, trying to adapt to the situation here. We are still quite happy with a point but, in the end...we could have done better than this."
Singapore will meet North Korea, who defeated hosts Mongolia 1-0 in the other Group G game on Friday, in their second match on Sunday.
The 11 group winners and four best runners-up will qualify for the Finals in Thailand in January. The top-three finishers will qualify for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.
Fandi concedes that he has little knowledge of the North Koreans, but he wants his players to go all out to get a result.
He said: "We don't know much about DPR Korea. They are very aggressive, very fit. What we can do is to watch them, but I hope we can find more videos of them.
"I know they have been training very hard for three weeks, that's what their coach said.
"We must be prepared; whatever comes, we have to face it. They are a very strong team.
"We are going into this game as underdogs but, hopefully, we can do better and get the three points."

Ajax's 'young lions' ready for tough battle in return leg
Ajax's 'young lions' ready for tough battle in return leg
LONDON • Ajax coach Erik ten Hag praised his "young lions" after the Dutch club moved within touching distance of the Champions League final after a deserved 1-0 win at Tottenham on Tuesday.
Donny van de Beek's well-taken 15th-minute goal put Ajax firmly in the driver's seat against a disappointing Spurs side, who face a tough task to turn around the semi-final in next week's second leg in Amsterdam.
"A fantastic achievement. We fought like lions," ten Hag said.
"We are halfway there and in good shape. The willpower was very nice to see."
Having beaten holders Real Madrid and fellow European giants Juventus on the way to their first Champions League semi-final since 1997, Ajax again showed why so many of their squad are attracting attention from some of the continent's biggest clubs.
Van de Beek was superb and even overshadowed Barcelona-bound midfielder Frenkie de Jong, while 19-year-old captain Matthijs de Ligt showed maturity beyond his years to marshal the defence as Tottenham improved after the break.
Had David Neres not been denied by the post late on, Ajax's position would look impregnable, but ten Hag knows the job is not yet completed.
"I think it's an excellent result for us. We won the game. We are satisfied. We have a very good starting point, but we're only halfway through," he told reporters.
"We can play football in different styles. We can defend very well. We have a team that work together really well; they can fight together really well."
The 22-year-old van de Beek said he still expected a tough battle next week at the Johan Cruyff stadium.
"The first 30 minutes were good but we found it tough after that. They changed things up and we had difficulty dealing with that," he said. "The second half was really a battle. It will be a tough game next week but, with our own supporters behind us, it will certainly be a huge boost to reach the final.
"We have to develop a good tactical plan so that we can play like we did in the first 30 minutes (of Tuesday's game)."
Tottenham's suspended forward Son Heung-min is set to be involved in the return leg.
And ten Hag is well aware of the danger the South Korean possesses.
"Of course, he's a very good player," he said, when asked if Son will change the way they approach the second leg.
"When he's not available for Spurs, that's a very big disadvantage for them.
"But, of course, we also have very good players to defend against him, and we will do that."

Football: Angry Messi says son asks why Argentines criticise his performances
BUENOS AIRES (AFP) - An uncharacteristically angry Lionel Messi revealed on Friday (March 29) how he struggles to deal with criticism of his performances for Argentina's national team, saying that even his six-year-old son was questioning why he was judged so harshly in his country.
The 31-year-old's return to the national side last week after an eight-month absence was marred by a humiliating 3-1 loss to Venezuela in a friendly. A groin strain then forced him to sit out an unconvincing 1-0 victory over Morocco.
"My six-year-old son Thiago asked me why they were killing me in Argentina. He watches videos on YouTube all the time, and he asks me why they don't want me," Messi said.
"I have to go through those things, but it doesn't matter."
The Barcelona star took a break from international duty after a disappointing World Cup last year, but his highly anticipated return proved a flop as Argentina lost to unfancied Venezuela in Madrid.
"I want to win something with the national team, and I'll keep trying," Messi told Argentine radio station Radio Club October.
He said he would continue to play for his country even though "a lot of people told me not to do it, not to suffer again."
Argentine fans and journalists have often taken their frustrations at under-par performances by the national team out on Messi, who is always expected to perform at the levels he does for Barcelona, where he is surrounded by star players.
Messi hit out at repeated lies about him in the media.
"People buy into everything that's said. So then I'm the 'son of a b***h' and the ones that feel the hurt most of all is my family. There are many lies told. There are new lies every day."

Ole gives stars 'licence to express', says Yorke
From the combative Roy Keane to the glamorous David Beckham and the trickery of George Best, Manchester United's heroes have all come with standout traits.
But breaking the mould is Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, the modest Norwegian who is doing wonders at Old Trafford in an unflashy manner, without donning a cape nor being a force of personality, according to former teammate Dwight Yorke.
"Ole's one of the nicest guys you'll ever meet in football. He doesn't give you any drama, he just gets on with his job, he's totally professional in what he does," the 47-year-old ex-Trinidad and Tobago international striker said yesterday in reply to The Straits Times' question on whether Solskjaer's managerial brilliance was evident during his playing days.
"I just didn't see him at this level.
"Like everything else, you need a little luck and fortune and he got that. You got to grasp these opportunities. It's a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for him."
Yorke was speaking on the sidelines at the launch of this year's International Champions Cup (ICC) Singapore at the Incubator, near the Padang.
On July 20, the Red Devils will take on Inter Milan and a day later, Juventus will meet Tottenham Hotspur.
British media has reported that Solskjaer is set for a permanent deal at Old Trafford this week and Yorke certainly believes the former striker is the right man to take United forward.
He said: "He has done a remarkable job, there is no question about that. The doubters who think that he wasn't capable of doing a job can pretty much eat their words now.
"May he continue to take the team forward. He's looking good, he's got the players playing with the passion and desire that we expect of a Man United player. That will be the case going forward."
Since Solskjaer took over on Dec 19 after Jose Mourinho's sacking, not only had he restored the team's competitive edge and playing style, he had also done so while smashing records.
He had won 14 out of 19 games, became the first United manager to win his first eight matches, surpassing Matt Busby's five, won a club record of nine consecutive away games and, by dumping Paris Saint-Germain out of the Champions League last 16, they became the first team in the tournament's history to advance after losing the first leg at home by two goals or more.
The key to the Red Devils' surge in form has been the caretaker's perceptive man-management skills, said Yorke.
He added: "I always think we have exceptional young players but these young players were not given the licence to express themselves, and expression is a word you associate a lot with Man United.
"When you just look at the talent that we have, nothing has changed.
"Our attackers (Romelu Lukaku, Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial) are as good as any other in the Premier League.
"It's about expressing themselves and exposing their talent. They have managed to do that under Ole."
Come July 20, Singapore fans will get the chance to watch the Red Devils express themselves, and fittingly, hear the classic chant "ole, ole" reverberate in the National Stadium.
Since then, it has not been so much a case of playing Pogba differently as giving him the trust and licence to express himself. Sometimes football can be as simple as an arm around the shoulder or

Football: Man City's slump down to more than Fernandinho absence
MANCHESTER, England (REUTERS) - Manchester City's surprise run of three defeats in four games, the latest in Wednesday's (Dec 26) 2-1 defeat at Leicester City, has been widely attributed to one simple cause - the absence of defensive midfielder Fernandinho.
Yet, while the Brazilian's injury has clearly dented their Premier League title defence, given the absence of any effective replacement to shield their defence, City's woes run deeper than the loss of just one individual, however influential.
The defeats at Chelsea and Leicester and at home to Crystal Palace, with only a home win against Everton limiting the damage, have seen Pep Guardiola's champions fall from being clear favourites and leaders to third place.
They are now a point behind Spurs and seven behind top side Liverpool, who visit the Etihad on Jan 3.
Last season's record-breaking title win was built on remarkable consistency, in results of course but also in terms of the starting line-up and approach.
Yet while the inevitable injuries picked up through a season did little to knock City off course last term, this season Guardiola has had to deal with not just the recent loss of Fernandinho but also of several key players at the same time.
David Silva missed City's last five games before returning at Leicester and his importance to the team's trademark style was certainly highlighted in the recent losses.
For what Fernandinho provides in solidity, defensive protection and the ability to stop counter-attacks and opposition momentum, Silva matches as the essential link in the short, quick passing game which makes City so hard to defend against.
Silva not only provides goals and assists, but brings out the best in those around him, particularly wide players Leroy Sane and Raheem Sterling, who have both been out of sorts in recent performances.
Sane and Sterling know that when Silva has the ball, the Spaniard, with his supreme reading of angles and timing, will find them if they make a move.
Without Silva, they have too often received the ball when stationary, allowing defenders time to set up and nullify them instead of finding themselves on the back foot being attacked with momentum and impetus.
Kevin De Bruyne is another to have only recently returned from long-term injury and, while City initially coped with the absence of the Belgian central midfielder, they have missed his ability to swiftly turn defence into attack with a surging run or sweeping pass.
Much of the focus on City's improvement last season was placed on the full back positions but with Benjamin Mendy injured, Fabian Delph has, of late, rarely looked much more than an adequate replacement.
Worse, England defender Kyle Walker's form has been shaky and he paid the price for a poor performance in the 3-2 home defeat to Palace by losing his place at Leicester with Danilo preferred at right-back.
The defence is no longer as solid, the midfield has missed key elements and the forward line is not operating anywhere near full effectiveness.
"What we have to do is try and change the dynamic to winning games. We are able to do that but I have to reflect myself, think about what the team needs and try to help them," said Guardiola.
"That is what will concern me for the next few days. Good results are miracles for the mind and I have to help the players come back, change something and try to win again."
A trip to Southampton is next on Sunday and, with Spurs and Liverpool in full flow, City can ill-afford another stumble if they are to avoid a poor December becoming an irretrievable slump.
