Football: Resurgent Valencia inflict ninth La Liga defeat on Real Madrid

VALENCIA (REUTERS) - Real Madrid's harrowing campaign continued as they fell to a ninth defeat in La Liga and their first since coach Zinedine Zidane returned as they were deservedly beaten 2-1 away by a resurgent Valencia on Wednesday (April 3).
Portugal international Goncalo Guedes fired Valencia into the lead in the 35th minute with a thumping shot from inside the area which was too powerful for Madrid goalkeeper Keylor Navas.
Madrid had played well until conceding, but lost momentum after the goal and Valencia continued to threaten into the second half, finally doubling their lead with a header by defender Ezequiel Garay from a corner in the 83rd.
Karim Benzema headed in a consolation goal for Madrid in stoppage time, shortly after Zidane's side had a penalty decision overturned after a Video Assistant Referee (VAR) review ruled Sergio Ramos was offside.
Madrid are stuck in third on 57 points, 13 behind La Liga leaders Barcelona and five behind city rivals Atletico Madrid.
Valencia, who have reached the Copa del Rey final and the quarter-finals of the Europa League, have Champions League qualification in their sights after climbing up to fifth in the table on 46 points, one behind fourth-placed Getafe.
The win extended their unbeaten run to 17 games in all competitions, their longest stretch without defeat in their 100-year history.
"We know that this has been a difficult year and we are working hard to make sure we come back stronger next season and I'm sure we will," Madrid midfielder Casemiro told reporters.
"We were in control for the first half then they scored and got more confident. We worked hard in the second half and tried to get back in the game but goals are what count. This defeat is difficult for us, we know we are not doing well but we must keep working."
It was Zidane's first away game since returning to the club after Santiago Solari was sacked last month, having won his first two games back against Celta Vigo and Huesca.
As he had promised ahead of the match, the Frenchman made sweeping changes from the team that had beaten Huesca, bringing back seven players including Toni Kroos, Luka Modric and Navas as Isco and Gareth Bale dropped to the bench.
Madrid dominated the early stages but could not turn their possession to chances and once Valencia took the lead through Guedes they rarely looked like letting it slip.
Marcelino's side missed a gilt-edged chance to seal victory when Kevin Gameiro attempted a backheel pass towards Carlos Soler when it would have been easier to shoot at goal.
But Argentine Garay made up for his team mate's wastefulness by effectively sealing the points with a towering header from captain Dani Parejo's corner.

Football: AC Milan may be banned from Europe as Uefa orders another Financial Fair Play probe

LAUSANNE (AFP) - AC Milan risk being excluded from European competition next season after Uefa on Wednesday (April 10) ordered another probe be carried out into the Italian club for breaches of Financial Fair Play (FFP) regulations.
European football's governing body said in a statement that Uefa's Club Financial Control Body (CFCB) investigatory chamber had decided "to refer the case of AC Milan to the CFCB adjudicatory chamber as the club has failed to comply with the break-even requirement."
The period relates to the 2018-19 season and covering 2016, 2017 and 2018, the statement continued.
"This referral is not related to the decision that was made by the CFCB adjudicatory in December 2018 and covering the 2014-15, 2015-16 and 2016-17 seasons," it added.
The Serie A giants are one of several clubs to have been investigated for breaching Uefa's rules, whereby clubs cannot spend more than they generate by their own means.
Milan have fallen foul of the financial rules since they spent €200 million (S$304.8 million) on transfers in the summer of 2017.
The 18-time Italian champions won an appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) last year, following a Uefa ban from the Europa League.
The club persuaded sport's highest court that their finances would improve under American hedge fund Elliott Management Corporation, who took control last summer when former Chinese owner Li Yonghong forfeited on the loan he had taken to buy the club in 2017 from former Italian prime minister Silvio Berlusconi.
Milan were assessed by Uefa in December, when they were told to break even by 2021 or have their European ban restored.
The club are currently on target to qualify for next season's Champions League, which they have won seven times, as they sit fourth in Serie A with seven games to play.
They failed to progress to the Europa League's knockout rounds but have managed to reach the semi-finals of the Italian Cup.

Football: Cannavaro future in doubt after just 10 days as China coach after two losses to weaker sides

Football: Cannavaro future in doubt after just 10 days as China coach after two losses to weaker sides

SHANGHAI (AFP) - Fabio Cannavaro's short reign as China football coach could already be over after the hosts were beaten for the second time in five days on Monday (March 25) and again failed to score.
The Italian World Cup winner in 2006 was put in charge 10 days ago, but the local media had speculated that the China Cup amounted to an audition to be fellow Italian Marcello Lippi's long-term successor.
If that was the case, the 45-year-old legendary defender fluffed his lines.
The home side followed up last Thursday's 1-0 loss to Thailand with another disjointed display in the four-team tournament, going down 1-0 to lower-ranked Uzbekistan in the third place play-off.
In front of a sparse crowd for the mid-afternoon match in Nanning, China failed to muster a shot on target and there was a smattering of jeers at the final whistle.
Former Juventus and Real Madrid star Cannavaro, who is also coach at Guangzhou Evergrande, said afterwards that he would hold talks with the Chinese Football Association (CFA) and the Chinese Super League (CSL) club.
"But until now the CFA hasn't made any clear statement about the appointment," he said.
"I have said before: taking over the national football team can be a very big challenge. The bigger the challenge, the greater the passion will be.

"As the national team is experiencing changes, we all have some concerns about the pace and degree of the changes.
"If (China) needs me, I will consider it, but who can be the coach of the national team cannot be decided in one day."
Juggling a top CSL job and the national side "is difficult", Cannavaro admitted, after another meek defeat that left China - who have grand ambitions to host a World Cup and become a major footballing force - bottom of the four sides in the China Cup.
"We still need to calm down and discuss it. If we cannot find a suitable way to cooperate, I will still coach Evergrande (only)."
Cannavaro made five changes to the side lucky to lose by just one goal to Thailand, but it only made the team - missing the rested Espanyol forward Wu Lei - less effective.
They were already on the back foot when forward Eldor Shomurodov took advantage of hesitant defending by Evergrande's Zhang Linpeng on 35 minutes to lash the ball into the roof of the net for Uzbekistan, who are 89th in the Fifa rankings to China's 72nd.
Uzbekistan, soundly defeated 3-0 by Uruguay on Friday, were also the better team in the second half and should have extended their lead, but China-based substitute Odil Ahmedov headed straight at goalkeeper Yan Junling.
In the final, stand-in forward Cristhian Stuani scored his third goal in two games as Uruguay taught Thailand a footballing lesson to win the China Cup with a 4-0 victory.
The 2018 World Cup quarter-finalists hardly missed the injured star-striking duo of Luis Suarez and Edinson Cavani as they made it seven goals in two games.

Football: Home United beat Lao Toyota 1-0 to move up to third in AFC Cup Group H

SINGAPORE - Home United breathed life into their Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Cup campaign after beating Lao Toyota 1-0 yesterday, but concerns linger over the team's ability to score goals.
The win, courtesy of a header from defender Abdil Qaiyyim before 1,227 fans at Jalan Besar Stadium, saw the Protectors create enough chances to put the Group H fixture to bed before settling for a solitary strike.
Without injured attackers Shahril Ishak (ankle) and Song Ui-Young (groin) and playing wide midfielder Hafiz Nor as a makeshift striker, Home's blunt cutting edge could yet return to haunt them later in the competition.
"With the chances we had, another goal would make this game safe for the team if we had a clinical finisher tonight," rued Protectors' coach Saswadimata Dasuki.
"The main thing now is to go to Laos (April 17) and get the three points. After that, we will go on against Kaya (Iloilo) and (PSM) Makassar.
Home had earlier drawn 1-1 with Indonesia Liga 1 runners-up Makassar and lost 5-0 to Philippine National League runners-up Kaya. The win moved the Singapore Premier League runners-up to third in Group H on four points, one point behind leaders Kaya and Makassar.
Against Lao Toyota, Hafiz, Adam Swandi, Izzdin Shafiq and Aqhari Abdullah all had shooting opportunities, but were unable go beat goalkeeper Outthilath Nammakhoth.
The game also became a duel between Hami Syahin and the Laotian custodian as the midfielder kept taking shots from distance to no avail.
Home finally found the net in first-half stoppage time when left-back Ho Wai Loon's floated a free kick to the far post for centre-back Abdil to head home emphatically.
Saswa said: "The most important thing is to get the three points. It was very risky at 1-0 as Lao Toyota never gave up. Credit to them, they kept coming at us till the last minute."
After seeing his players battle the full 90 minutes, Lao Toyota coach Jun Fukuda was disappointed, saying: "We came for three points but we couldn't score."
Elsewhere, Tampines Rovers thrashed Cambodian champions Nagaworld FC 5-1 in Phnom Penh to lead Group F with seven points from three games.

LONDON • Despite claiming that Tottenham's English Premier League title hopes are over, Mauricio Pochettino believes his players will still be motivated to give their best shot when they host Arsenal at Wembley today.
Spurs were dreaming of a title challenge just a week ago, but back-to-back defeats by Burnley and Chelsea mean that even their top-four spot is now in danger.
But the Tottenham manager remained hopeful for today's north London derby, saying: "Of course to motivate for this type of game is an easy job.
"We don't need to motivate the players. We know very well what it means to play against Arsenal.
"We know that we're going to be very motivated and we'll have a team that is very motivated, too."
Third-placed Spurs are on 60 points and their lead over the Gunners is down to just four, with Manchester United and Chelsea also close behind in the race for the final two Champions League places next season.

"Of course it's going to be tough, They have very good players, they are doing a very good job," the Argentinian added.
"But my team is doing a fantastic job in the last five years. I can talk from where we have arrived. We are changing that perception that Tottenham were a little bit soft."
Following today's match, Tottenham still have to travel to title-chasing Liverpool and Manchester City in the final nine games of the league campaign.
Much of the damage done in the past week will be forgotten should Spurs bounce back in the derby and open up what ought to be a decisive seven-point advantage over Arsenal.
For Unai Emery, a thrilling 4-2 win over Tottenham in early December was the highlight of his first season as Arsenal boss.
However, in contrast to their stunning form at the Emirates, Arsenal have won just once on the road in the Premier League in their past seven games and that was at rock-bottom Huddersfield.
Emery's embarrassment of riches going forward was demonstrated in a 5-1 thrashing of Bournemouth on Wednesday.
However, the Spaniard has struggled to find the right balance as Arsenal have not kept a clean sheet away from home in the Premier League all season.
There would be no better way for him to win over a still-unconvinced fan base than by curing his side's travel sickness today and delivering another blow to Spurs and solidifying Arsenal's own position.
Emery, though, knows it is no easy task to play at Wembley.
"There was a 10-point difference two weeks ago and now it's four points. We are playing for three points and more," he said at his press conference yesterday.
"But each derby is different. Playing home and away can be very different. Matches like tomorrow the players know it's important first to get three points and because it is special for the supporters.
"We must play with confidence and keep our minds free."

Afghan chief denies abusing women

Afghan chief denies abusing women
KABUL • Afghanistan's football boss Keramuddin Karim on Monday rejected allegations he sexually and physically abused members of the women's national team, suggesting that his accusers may have invented the claims to help their applications for asylum in Europe.
Karim has been accused of punching, raping and threatening female players, including holding a gun to one's head, in allegations first reported by Britain's The Guardian newspaper in November.
An investigation into the claims is ongoing but, in an interview with AFP, he was confident that his name would be cleared.
"I strongly deny these allegations," said Karim, who has been suspended from his position as president of the Afghanistan Football Federation (AFF) pending the outcome of the investigation.
"This is a conspiracy. There has been no evidence or proof provided, only a number of unidentified voices, anonymous identities, have made the allegations."
He said his accusers might be using the serious allegations to "seek asylum in Europe", or they might be people who are "conspiring to defame us, hurt us in the federation".
"They are inside and outside the country plotting against us," Karim said, refusing to name the people he was referring to.
He also told AFP he was cooperating with investigators from Afghanistan's Attorney-General's Office, which last Friday slapped a flight ban on him and four other federation officials after suspending them from their positions.
World governing body Fifa has also suspended Karim for 90 days.
He added: "I personally am not aware of such things taking place.
"As a father and a husband, I have been affected (by the claims), it has been painful."

Football: Bale 100 per cent committed to Real, claims agent

LONDON (AFP) – Gareth Bale is still “100 per cent” committed to Real Madrid despite speculation over his future, the Wales star’s agent insisted on Monday (April 29).
Former Tottenham winger Bale has been linked with a return to the Premier League after a difficult season with the troubled Spanish club.
The 29-year-old has had to endure claims that he doesn’t have a strong relationship with his team-mates, while Real have suffered a woeful campaign on the pitch.
Bale played the full 90 minutes when Real suffered a shock 1-0 defeat against lowly Rayo Vallecano on Sunday, but Madrid boss Zinedine Zidane later questioned whether he was fully focused.
Bale’s agent Jonathan Barnett has responded to Zidane’s comments by telling BBC Sport Wales: “Gareth is 100 per cent committed to Real Madrid.”
Referring to his past assertion that Bale wanted to spend the rest of his career with Madrid, Barnett added: “Nothing has changed.”
Frustrated at a lack of starting opportunities for Real towards the end of last season, Bale had actually hinted he might consider leaving when he spoke to the media immediately after scoring twice in last year’s Champions League final win against Liverpool.
Bale’s Madrid contract runs until 2022, but the return of Zidane, with whom he reportedly has a difficult relationship, has revived talk of a potential move.
Despite winning four Champions League trophies and one La Liga title in Spain, Bale has come under-fire for his inconsistent performances and injury problems from Real fans.
Zidane, who is back after quitting at the end of last season, recently warned Real stars who are unhappy with their playing time should “go elsewhere and get more minutes”.
Manchester United and Tottenham are among the clubs said to be interested if Wales international Bale wants to leave the Bernabeu.
