Football: Chelsea fan banned for homophobic abuse

LONDON (AFP) - A Chelsea fan has been banned from football matches for three years after being ejected from their Premier League game against Brighton for shouting homophobic abuse.
The 20-year-old man pleaded guilty to the offence of using threatening, abusive or insulting words during Chelsea's 2-1 win at Brighton's Amex Stadium on December 16.
As a result, the fan has been banned and fined £965 (S$1,665).
A spokesperson for Brighton and Hove Albion said in a statement: "We would like to thank Sussex Police for their assistance in dealing with this unsavoury incident, and we are very pleased with the outcome.
"It underlines both their and our commitment to a zero-tolerance policy on any form of abuse from those attending matches at the Amex. We would remind all fans that we will not tolerate any form of abusive behaviour at the stadium and will always take the strongest possible action."
The fan ban is the latest worrying incident involving Chelsea supporters this season.
A Chelsea fan was accused of shouting racist abuse at Manchester City star Raheem Sterling during the Blues' 2-0 win at Stamford Bridge.
Chelsea manager Maurizio Sarri admitted he was frustrated by the "stupid" people who were tarnishing his club's reputation after repeated complaints about fans singing an anti-Semitic chant about Tottenham supporters.

(REUTERS) - Wayne Rooney was sent off for the first time in Major League Soccer (MLS) after the DC United forward made a poorly-timed lunging tackle on Los Angeles FC striker Diego Rossi on Saturday (April 6).
The 33-year-old, in his second season with DC United, lost control of the ball and lunged with both feet off the ground just as Rossi took a touch. His studs landed hard on Rossi's leg, just below the knee, scything down the Uruguayan.
The referee initially produced a yellow card but following a check with the Video Assistant Referee (VAR), he changed his decision and showed the former England international a straight red card.
"I have no arguments," Rooney, who is England's leading scorer, told reporters. "It wasn't malicious, I didn't try to hurt him.
"But obviously I caught him. I was expecting (a red card) really when the referee gave me the yellow. It's the right call."
It was Rooney's first red card since 2014 and the seventh of his career for club and country. DC United, who were 3-0 down at the time, lost 4-0 as Rossi completed a hat-trick.

LONDON (AFP) – Tottenham Hotspur suffered their second defeat in English knockout football in a matter of days as they lost 2-0 to Crystal Palace in the fourth round of the FA Cup on Sunday (Jan 27). 
Connor Wickham gave the unfancied Eagles, 29 points adrift of Spurs in the Premier League, a ninth-minute lead before a penalty by former Tottenham winger Andros Townsend made it 2-0. 
Spurs’ Kieran Trippier missed with a penalty before half-time as Tottenham suffered more spot-kick woe following Thursday’s shoot-out defeat by Chelsea, another of their London rivals, in a League Cup semi-final. 
FA Cup-holders Chelsea had no such problems later on Sunday as they marked Argentina striker Gonzalo Higuain’s club debut with a 3-0 win at home to Championship side Sheffield Wednesday.  Willian scored twice either side of a goal from highly-rated English teenager Callum Hudson-Odoi, linked with a transfer window move to German giants Bayern Munich. 
There was no goal for Higuain, signed on loan until the end of the season from Juventus on Wednesday.  But Gianfranco Zola, Chelsea’s assistant manager and himself a former Blues striker, told the BBC: “We are pleased with Gonzalo Higuain’s performance, he was trying to find the space and get on the ball. 
“It wasn’t easy as they had a lot of players round him.”
Earlier, Tottenham’s reverse left Mauricio Pochettino still searching for his first trophy as their manager since the Argentinian joined from Southampton in 2014, with Spurs’ last piece of silverware the 2008 League Cup. 
Spurs were without injured England stars Harry Kane and Dele Alli, while the in-form Son Heung-Min had still to return from international duty with South Korea at the Asia Cup. 
Pochettino, however, decided to omit Christian Eriksen, with the influential playmaker not even among Spurs’ substitutes at Selhurst Park.  For all they are third in the Premier League, Spurs are nine points adrift of leaders Liverpool. 

‘So painful’

The Champions League is now Tottenham’s only realistic hope of a trophy this season, with Pochettino’s men playing Borussia Dortmund in the last 16.  “It was so painful to lose the game like this,” Pochettino told BT Sport. 
“We have to look forward to the Premier League and Champions League. We cannot complain and just try in the two competitions to give our best.”
It took Palace a mere nine minutes to open the scoring, Wickham following up after a Jeff Schlupp shot was blocked by Spurs goalkeeper Paulo Gazzaniga.  Palace doubled their lead when Townsend slammed a home a penalty after Spurs’ Kyle Walker-Peters handled a cross into the box. 
But at the other end, after Patrick van Aanholt brought down Juan Foyth, Trippier blasted a penalty well wide of the post.  
Chelsea did not have things all their own way against second-tier Wednesday, who thought they had been awarded a penalty in the 22nd minute.  Joey Pelupessy tried to meet Steven Fletcher’s pass, with Ethan Ampadu sliding in to win the ball before being kicked by the Wednesday midfielder. 
Referee Andre Marriner awarded a penalty but this was overturned by VAR, being trialled in some English cup fixtures this season. 
“It’s crazy,” said Owls’ caretaker boss Steve Agnew, holding the fort ahead of Steve Bruce’s imminent arrival.  “Obviously the VAR decisions are correct but what baffled me was surely it’s a corner if it came off their player. The referee gave a drop ball. And a minute later they have a penalty.”
Wednesday’s woe was compounded soon afterwards when Willian scored from the spot after Sam Hutchinson trod on Cesar Azpilicueta inside the box.  VAR was called into action again but this time Marriner’s decision was upheld and Willian, after appearing to offer the spot-kick to Higuain, made no mistake.  
Chelsea had to wait until midway through the second half for Hudson-Odoi to make it 2-0 before Willian, playing a neat one-two with Olivier Giroud, completed the scoring seven minutes from time.

SOUTHAMPTON, England (REUTERS) - When Liverpool cleared a corner and the ball arrived at Mohamed Salah's feet 20 yards inside his own half at Southampton on Friday (April 5) there was just one thing on the Egyptian's mind.
A handful of seconds later, after a searing 50-metre run, his left-foot shot flew past Angus Gunn to give Liverpool the lead on a nailbiting night on the south coast.
Jordan Henderson scored another one to make it 3-1 and confirm Liverpool's place back on top of the Premier League, but the defining moment was Salah's drought-busting effort.
He had not scored for eight matches, his worst run at Liverpool, but his 80th-minute intervention could not have been better-timed. It was his 50th Premier League goal for Liverpool and, more importantly, proved that any concern over his form in the title run-in could be put to bed.
With five league games left Salah is undeniably back.
"What a goal! Wow, what a goal!" Liverpool manager Juergen Klopp, who hugged his striker on the pitch as Liverpool's fans roared out their song about the "Egyptian King".
Salah is the eighth Liverpool player to score 50 Premier League goals, but his half century arrived in only 69 games, three fewer than Fernando Torres, the previous quickest to the mark.

 
Only two other players in the Premier League era have reached the landmark quicker - Manchester United's Ruud van Nistelrooy and Alan Shearer for Blackburn Rovers.
Klopp told reporters he had never doubted Salah would rediscover his scoring touch.
"It was never in doubt about him being a great player from my side," Klopp said. "It was goal number 50 I heard for Liverpool, that's an incredible number," the German said.
"As a striker, you have chances and each striker is a human being - maybe you have better moments and less good moments. But he is pretty consistent, his physical things are always there. He always stayed calm to deal with the situation."
Liverpool were not at their best, especially in a sluggish first half when they gave the ball away cheaply too often and Southampton threatened to add to their ninth-minute opener scored by Shane Long.
But once Naby Keita levelled with a deflected header in the 36th minute, his first goal for Liverpool, the visitors were relentless in their pursuit of a crucial win.
Klopp's side have now won seven of their last eight Premier League games when conceding the opening goal - a resilience that will be causing concern at relentless Manchester City who now trail by two points having played a game less.
"The season is intense for everyone," Klopp said.
"The performance was not top level but it is about fighting.
"People want us to play like Manchester City, we are unable to do that, we play our own football. We have 82 points now, that is massive in this crazy league and everyone is waiting for us. I am really proud. It is incredible.
"It is a difficult year for everybody, you need to have 70-75 points for the (top-four) Champions League and 90-something for the title.
"We are in the race and that is nice."

There remains plenty of work to do for the Premier League leaders, who will be disappointed they were unable to gain a bigger advantage for next week's second leg.
On a bitterly cold night at Anfield, Liverpool were well below their best and Porto deserve credit for a determined performance after going two goals down in 26 minutes.
The visitors fired an early warning shot with Moussa Marega blasting narrowly wide in the second minute but the home side took the lead three minutes later through a Keita shot which deflected off Porto midfielder Oliver Torres and beat the helpless Iker Casillas.
Mohamed Salah then forced Casillas into a low save with a sharp shot on the turn, but the Egyptian should have done better in the 22nd minute when he placed the ball wide when through on goal, after being played in by a sloppy Porto pass.
Liverpool had their second four minutes later - Jordan Henderson split the Porto defence with a superb pass to Trent Alexander-Arnold, whose low cross was tapped in from close range by Firmino. The Brazilian should have added to his tally, but blasted over after a good cross from Henderson.
The dangerous Marega then had a low drive well saved by the legs of Liverpool keeper Alisson Becker as Porto showed they were not about to roll over.
Sadio Mane had an effort ruled out for offside three minutes after the interval, but apart from another Marega effort in the 69th minute there were few clear-cut chances in the second half.

LIVERPOOL (AFP) - Under leaden English skies, Liverpool became a carnival of red on Sunday as the football-mad city hailed its heroes for bringing home the Champions League trophy for the first time in 14 years.
"We're just so excited," said Tina Taylor, 51, as she joined tens of thousands of locals thronging the city's streets to watch the team parade Europe's top football prize from an open-top bus.
"It's so uplifting for the city, bringing everybody together," she added, decked out in a red Liverpool shirt and scarf alongside her husband and son, as the team bus neared their vantage point in the suburb of Mossley Hill.
Moments later the double-decker, emblazoned with "Champions of Europe", rolled by with the famous silver trophy being hoisted aloft by bouncing Liverpool players amid red flare smoke, confetti and wild cheers.
The club claimed the European crown for the sixth time Saturday night in Madrid with a 2-0 win over Tottenham in only the second ever all-English final.
It followed an epic season in which Liverpool narrowly missed out on a first league title in three decades, causing agony - now somewhat relieved - for fans impatient to end the long wait.
"What a day - what a weekend! Imagine lifting that cup," said 78-year-old Stan Evans, a lifelong local fan who looked out of a first-floor pub window as star striker player Mohamed Salah held it aloft just below his gaze.
Evans could recall cheering all five of Liverpool's previous European Cup triumphs, starting in 1977, when they beat Borussia Moenchengladbach in the final in Rome.
"This is just as good because I never thought we'd see another one in my lifetime," he added.

'I MIGHT CRY AGAIN'

Celebrations ran late into the night in Liverpool city centre, as ecstatic supporters danced drunkenly in the streets singing a repertoire of the club's anthems.
The morning after, bleary-eyed fans began streaming back onto the streets ahead of the parade, which worked its way slowly towards the city centre.
"I'm ecstatic and hungover at the same time - the best type of hangover," said Peter Broad, 37, a social housing worker and Liverpool native.

 
 
 
 
"I might cry again," he added, flag in hand.
"It's emotional - it means so much to you just to win. Liverpool's a very European city, it's always been outward-looking," Broad explained.
Thousands of fans lined the roads east of the city centre, while children climbed atop bus stops for a better view, as the bus - preceded by a booming sound stage - made its way.
A jubilant atmosphere rippled through the city, as all manner of Liverpool flags flew from buildings and cars, drivers sounded horns and fans carried everything from banners to balloon replicas of the trophy.
Aleisha Tipton, 23, from nearby Cheshire, staked out a prime spot near the waterfront end-point.
"We don't care about waiting all afternoon to see them," she said of her heroes as light rain started to fall.
"It can rain all day, we don't care!" She was wearing a commemorative scarf from 2005, when Liverpool last won the competition in a memorable come-from-behind victory over AC Milan in Istanbul.
"This time is better for me as I was only nine then."
For her granddad Ken Jones, 79, this Liverpool team is up there with the best he has seen.
"They're brilliant," he said. "I don't think they could replace them with anything better."
