Football: Ronaldo brace seals new record for Juventus

MILAN (AFP) - Cristiano Ronaldo scored twice as voracious Italian champions Juventus finished 2018 on a high with a 2-1 win over Sampdoria to set a new record of 53 points before the winter break.
Ronaldo curled in the opener after just two minutes in Turin adding a second from the penalty spot after 66 minutes, putting the Portuguese top of Serie A's scoring charts on 14 goals.
Evergreen Sampdoria striker Fabio Quagliarella pulled the Genoa outfit level with a penalty after 33 minutes, with the visitors having a late Riccardo Saponara goal ruled offside after consultation with the video assistant referee.
VAR proved decisive in the game with Sampdoria coach Marco Giampaolo, dismissing Ronaldo's penalty as "a gift," adding "that Saponara goal should never have been cancelled".
"Juventus are strong, they consume everything. They are a cannibal," said Giampaolo.
"For me, morally, the game was 2-2."
Juventus open up a 12-point lead at the top of Serie A ahead of Napoli who can reduce the gap when they host Bologna later on Saturday.
The seven-time reigning champions also have a record number of points before the three-week winter break with 53 from 19 games.
"Records are meaningless, if not to improve and raise the bar," said coach Massimiliano Allegri, whose team target a first trophy of the season in the Italian SuperCup on Jan 16 against AC Milan.
The reigning champions have dropped points just twice, being held 1-1 by Genoa at home in October and 2-2 against Atalanta midweek, and are firmly on track for an eighth consecutive Scudetto.

VAR DECISIVE

Ronaldo had come off the bench to score in Bergamo last Wednesday but returned to the starting line-up in the Allianz Stadium.
And the Portuguese striker found a way through early, picking up a Paulo Dybala cross to fire in past Sampdoria's on loan Juventus goalkeeper Emil Audero.
Sampdoria pulled level following a penalty awarded following an Emre Can handball with Quagliarella making no mistake beating Mattia Perin in the Juventus goal.
The 35-year-old became the first player to score in nine consecutive Serie A games since David Trezeguet for Juventus in 2005.
Audero denied Dybala before the break with Mario Mandzukic missing a chance to finish off a Ronaldo cross.
The Sampdoria goalkeeper again deflected over a Ronaldo header on the hour but the hosts went ahead when the referee pointed to the spot for an Alex Ferrari handball off a corner after a VAR viewing.
Substitute Saponara looked to have grabbed a point deep into injury time but VAR ruled he was in an offside position as Sampdoria stay fifth, two points behind Lazio who occupy the final Champions League spot.
"I like VAR a lot because it reduces the number of mistakes," said Ronaldo.
"It's not easy for the match officials to analyse everything that goes on in a match. We just have to let them get on with their jobs."
The five-time Ballon d'Or winner joined Juventus from Real Madrid last summer.
"The first half of the season has gone really well," said the 33-year-old, "but there's still a long way to go. We must stay focused and keep working away if we want to achieve great things."
Inter Milan, in third, travel to Tuscany outfit Empoli on Saturday, without their fans, who are barred after racism and violence overshadowed their midweek game against Napoli in the San Siro.

Football: Call in Iran for footballers to be punished over Japan melee

TEHERAN (AFP) - A prominent Iranian politician on Tuesday (Jan 29) called for players in the country's national football team to be punished for clashing with their Japanese opponents after losing in the Asian Cup semi-finals.
In the dying minutes of Iran's 3-0 defeat to Japan on Monday, striker Sardar Azmoun slapped Japan midfielder Gaku Shibasaki in the face, sparking a melee that also involved his teammates Ehsan Hajsafi and Ramin Rezaeian.
Ali Motahari, Deputy Speaker in Iran's Parliament, called for them to be disciplined.
"When we're accused of terrorism and violence by America and Israel, the attitude that Messrs Azmoun, Hajsafi and Rezaeian showed before the eyes of the world was a fatal blow to the Iranian nation and they must be punished," Motahari wrote on his Instagram account.
"The team that could have been Asia's champions failed due to spiritual, psychological and ethical weaknesses," added the reformist politician.
Since pulling out of the 2015 nuclear deal with Iran last year - otherwise known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, or JCPOA - the United States has reimposed sanctions on the country and renewed its longstanding accusations about it sponsoring terrorism.
Team Melli, as the Iran national team are known, were widely criticised for their performance against Japan on Tuesday.

The conservative Vatan-e Emrooz daily published an article about them titled "Parjam", which is a play on the Farsi term for the JCPOA (Barjam) and translates as "the cup is lost".
It described a protest by Iran's players over an edge-of-the-box challenge as "childish" and said it distracted them and opened the way for Japan to score their first goal and gain the momentum that took them to victory.
The Iran Football Federation steered clear of the controversy, however, praising the team's "sincere efforts and endeavour" and thanking outgoing coach Carlos Quieroz of Portugal for his eight-year tenure.

Football: Sacked Mourinho says time in charge of Man United already in the past

LONDON (REUTERS) - Jose Mourinho said on Wednesday (Dec 19) his Manchester United career was a closed chapter following his sacking as manager a day earlier, but the Portuguese confirmed he would return to management.
United sacked Mourinho after suffering their worst start to a season for 28 years and replaced him with former striker Ole Gunnar Solskjaer until the end of the current Premier League campaign.
"Manchester United has a future without me and I have a future without United," Mourinho told Sky Sports.
"Why should I be sharing more now, even with the supporters, any of my feelings? It's over. That's the way I've always been.
"I've been critical of managers that leave clubs and speak about what's happened and who's to blame. That's not me. I just want to finish like it happened yesterday and I'd like to say it's game over. I hope you media respect this way for me to be.
"Until I get back to football I have my right to live my normal life. That's what I want to do. United is the past."
Mourinho, who replaced Dutchman Louis van Gaal in May 2016, won the Europa League and League Cup in his first season.

He then guided United to second place in the Premier League and the FA Cup final, where they were beaten by Chelsea, in his second.
Yet his third season was riddled with problems both on and off the pitch, including the breakdown of his relationship with record signing Paul Pogba, before United pulled the plug with the team sitting sixth in the league.
Mourinho's final game in charge was a 3-1 defeat at bitter rivals Liverpool on Sunday.
However, the former Porto, Chelsea, Inter Milan and Real Madrid boss said he would retain positive memories of his time at Old Trafford and not focus on what went wrong.
"You know me. I don't change, what I did when I left Chelsea is the same as what I'm going to do now," the 55-year-old said.
"I keep the good things and I don't speak about anything that happened in the club. We could speak about so many good things, not as good, but that's not me. It's finished."
United's next game is at Cardiff City on Saturday, where Solskjaer was manager for nine months in 2014.

Football: Chelsea collapse to 4-0 defeat at Bournemouth

BOURNEMOUTH, England (REUTERS) - Chelsea collapsed to a humiliating 4-0 defeat at Bournemouth to put a dent in their top-four hopes on Wednesday (Jan 30) - all the goals coming in the second half.
The visitors controlled the first half but were picked off after the break with Joshua King on target twice for Eddie Howe's mid-table side, with David Brooks and Charlie Daniels completing the rout.
For all their possession the closest Chelsea came to scoring in the opening period was Mateo Kovacic's header which was touched onto the bar by Bournemouth keeper Artur Boruc.
Bournemouth were a threat on the break with Brooks and Junior Stanislas were both denied by Spanish keeper Kepa Arrizabalaga.
Chelsea fell behind two minutes after the break when Brooks's astute reverse pass released King to fire high past Arrizabalaga and things went from bad to worse as King's pass over the top left released Brooks who stepped inside David Luiz's half-hearted tackle and fired home.
Stanislas set up King for his second after a flowing move and Daniels rubbed salt in Chelsea's wounds, his stoppage-time goal meaning they drop below Arsenal into fifth on goals scored.

Football: Southampton earn point against Chelsea in dour 0-0 draw

LONDON (REUTERS) - Southampton held Chelsea to a goalless draw on Wednesday (Jan 2), debutant Saints' goalkeeper Angus Gunn proving a bright spark in an otherwise lacklustre Premier League encounter at Stamford Bridge.
The 22-year-old made a series of fine saves to earn the struggling visitors a point and leave Chelsea in fourth, 10 points adrift of leaders Liverpool.
Chelsea, as expected, dominated possession and top-scorer Eden Hazard had the best chance of the first half but Gunn blocked the Belgian's point blank shot in the 34th minute.
Southampton started the second half with more purpose and, minutes in, midfielder Stuart Armstrong tested Kepa Arrizabalaga in the Chelsea goal for the first time, the Spanish keeper having to dive to push the ball clear.
Gunn denied Hazard again in the 56th minute with a fine save after the Belgian had danced round the Southampton defence.
Hazard, at the centre of most dangerous-looking Chelsea moves, put Alvaro Morata through in the 70th minute and the Spaniard's shot hit the back of the net but was judged offside.
Gunn smothered another Morata shot eight minutes later after the striker had been put through by substitute Ruben Loftus-Cheek and kept out Marcos Alonso in the dying moments of the game.

Football: Defiant Sarri expects to stay with Chelsea next season

Football: Defiant Sarri expects to stay with Chelsea next season

LONDON (AFP) - Maurizio Sarri is already planning for next season after insisting he expects to remain in charge at Chelsea despite his troubled debut campaign.
Sarri was reportedly on the brink of being sacked after Chelsea suffered humiliating Premier League defeats at Bournemouth and Manchester City and then crashed out of the FA Cup against Manchester United.
The Blues also lost the League Cup final to Manchester City, with Sarri subjected to the embarrassment of Chelsea keeper Kepa Arrizabalaga refusing to be substituted at Wembley.
But that challenge to the Italian manager's authority has actually sparked an upturn in Chelsea's fortunes.
Vital wins over Tottenham and Fulham have kept Chelsea in the race for a top-four finish and given Sarri a little breathing space.
The former Napoli boss isn't out of the woods yet as a Europa League exit against Dynamo Kiev, who visit west London for the last-16 first leg on Thursday, would put him back in trouble.
However, Sarri isn't worried about the speculation over his future, preferring to look ahead to next term in the belief he will remain in charge at Stamford Bridge.
"It's not a big problem. The problem is the results. All the rest is not important at this moment," Sarri told reporters when asked about his job prospects on Wednesday (March 6).
"I want to win for the team, for the club, not for me. It's not important.
"I'm confident. I was confident in the past, and I am confident now of course.
"We were talking about the problem of the next pre-season. So we were trying to organise in the best way the next pre-season.
"But I want to think only to our performances and our results. Nothing else.
"It's not important if I'm here next season."

CALLS FOR MORE HELP IN EUROPE

In the midst of a hectic schedule that includes a home game against Wolves on Sunday, Sarri is considering taking a risk by resting some of his stars for the Kiev game.
And he echoed the concerns of Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino about English clubs being at a disadvantage in European competitions due to punishing schedules.
"I think the Premier League could do something more for the teams involved in European competitions," he said.
"If you play in the Europa League in Italy, after the match away you can ask to play on Monday.
"One day more to rest. I think that's really very important.
"For example, when we will play in the Premier League after 62 or 63 hours after the match against Dynamo Kiev. I think it's too early."
Winning the Europa League would guarantee Chelsea return to the Champions League next season, but Sarri is still hopeful of qualifying for the tournament with a top-four finish in the Premier League.
The Blues sit sixth in the English top flight, two points behind fourth-placed Manchester United, with a game in hand.
"I think we can gain the spot in the Champions League in the Premier League," Sarri added.
"We are fighting. We are only two points away, at the moment, and have to play one match in hand.
"But the Europa League is a very important competition, the second in Europe, an important trophy with a spot for the Champions League. It's a very important target for us."
